My external hard drive wont work

until today, my laptop wont read and open up my external hard drive. i haven't unplugged it without safely removing it or anything either. it also makes this constant tapping noise, like the sound of a tap dripping. (which it never used to make) does anyone know what i can do to make my laptop find my external or fix it? cheers

How to get social work jobs in Colorado

What is the best way to find Social Work employment in Colorado? What are some different mental health agencies that are hiring? I am trying to move to Colorado by the end of the year and am a licensed social worker. I have started to get my appliations/resume together, but could use any useful information at all that could help me find a job. I guess I am not too interested in the Denver area, but would like to be in the range from Colorado Springs to Grand Junction, and as far down as Durango. I would love to live directly in Gunnison, CO if at all possible...but thats a small town. Thanks...

lunching with interns

i've become somewhat chummy with an intern at work this summer. i guess i have a stupid little crush on her actually. she's leaving in a couple of weeks. is it a bad idea to have lunch with her away from the workplace? professionally AND socially? nothing is going to happen beyond this, it would be logistically impossible. (i'm twice her age, married 15+ yrs) - it is rare for me to "click" with people, but when i do, it's significant, as in this case, i'm somewhat of an individualist. i've talked a couple of times to my wife about intern etc, but would not go out of my way to tell her about a lunch, "lunching" is atypical for me --but if she learned, would probably roll her eyes.

Are you forced to listen to the same music every day at work or elsewhere, and do you like it, dislike it, or just not notice it? Mainly, I'm curious how you manage to deal with it, or if I'm really that sensitive to repetitive music. Or are you the one playing the same station out loud every day? Project manager? Technical lead? Code monkey?

I'm happy at the tech company I work for but am increasingly concerned about my career progression. Nearly a year ago, I took on new role as a project manager, moving from a role with a mix of development and client technical liaison/consulting. My company is currently strongly encouraging me to take on even more of a project management role. I think I'd rather move towards working as a technical lead, I'm concerned that getting myself too far removed from technical work now could make it too difficult to move back later. I could really use some advice from Metafilter-ites with experience in tech firms and technical project management! [more inside]
