I recently accepted a promotion. Awesome. The problem is, my old boss has subsequently put a moratorium on people leaving my current department for 3 months. We are desperately short on resources, so I am sympathetic to his predicament, but at the same time, I am very bothered by a few things: 1) Since I accepted the offer, he has piled more work on my plate that he expects me to finish regardless of how long it takes. This would include projects that spill over the 3 month moratorium. 2) I spoke to him about applying for this new position before he announced this policy and he never mentioned a thing. He always mentioned we would do a 'transition plan', which if you read point 1, doesn't sound like any type of transition plan. He announced this policy 1 day after I was extended an offer. 3) The promotion is a $15k jump in compensation. I will be seeing none of that for 3 months because of this policy. [more inside]
How do I win friends and influence people when I don't know what they look like? My new job requires me to manage client projects remotely. Most of my time with clients is spent either in conference calls, one-on-one phone calls, or communicating through email and Basecamp. I usually have no idea what these people look like. As a project manager I need to keep the client moving towards the finish line by making decisions quickly and getting things done on time. My question is two fold: 1) How do I motivate and influence a team that works for another organization?, and 2) How do I best do this being remote? I am looking for techniques and tools that will help me be an effective, remote, 3rd party project manager. If it matters I work for a Software as a Service company. My clients are implementing our software on their websites. The client may or may not have a dedicated project manager. Help me drive things forward!
I have started a new job at a established internet startup. Decorating your cube is a big deal around here. I need ideas for something cool. As I am a project manager, I would like to have something somewhat professional but also creative / aesthetic pleasing. Any ideas for cube flair? Any cool cubes you have seen that aren't over the top? Help me have the coolest cube ever!!!
How do you stay motivated in cubicle hell? I go through bouts of being motivated, sometimes for weeks. I am on top of my emails. I am making the phone calls. I am knocking down deliverables. I am having productive team meetings. And then something happens. I can't be bothered. I don't actively manage my inbox. My commitment to following GTD falls apart. I let certain things slip through the cracks. I just don't feel like doing any work. And then two weeks later I get motivated again. This has plagued me forever. Same thing in university. It's like I have ADD but instead of losing focus in the span of seconds, I lose focus in the span of weeks. How can I keep my foot on the gas pedal and feel like I am not a corporate bum half the time. Anyone else like this? Anyone have any tricks for keeping at a steady productive state?
How do I get coworkers to spend quality time with me? I am starting a new gig as a business analyst, and will be trying to convince strangers that they should meet with me to tell me about their jobs, needs, and requirements. After that I have to also get them to review the documentation I will create. What tactics have / would you use to get quality results from people who are busy and don't know you from Adam?
A friend of mine from Madrid, who has been living in the States for 10 years, has been offered a promotion / transfer to Dubai UAE. Anyone lived in Dubai, know someone who has lived there, or have any interesting anecdotes to share??? Any info / leads / advice would be greatly appreciated.
