Unsure if I should seek clarification on workplace procedures

Sorry if I am vague. Other than seeming to lack leadership qualities my current boss has been nothing but pleasant (I mention this so it doesn't seem like I am questioning whether to do this because of my bosses behavior). I have been working at this place for a few months now. Basically I am unclear on several policies and procedures that are critical to my ability to do my job. I tend to overthink things but at the same time I feel like not understanding leads to a more stressful and possibly not correctly executed set of working conditions. My supervision in this job is nearly non existent and I am somewhat free to act as I see fit but my boss has said he wants things done a certain way. Going further this wasn't a failure to pay attention on my part . There was significant training done by the company but none of it focused on this area. Basically my issue is should I sit down with my boss and seek clarification on a number of points ( something which would probably take 15 minutes) when technically I can do my job without the clarification but it might mean my work may not be in line with my bosses, the companies, or common sense expectations? Working in Rutherford, NJ. Where should I live? Can I live in NYC?

I'm a single, college-educated, mid-twenties male who will very likely be relocating from the West Coast to the Tri-State area in a few months for a full-time desk job in Rutherford, New Jersey. I'd love to know your recommendations for affordable rooms, apartments, studios, etc. in safe and convenient neighborhoods. [N.B. I grew up in and lived in South Brooklyn for many years, so I'm familiar with the NYC area, but I've never lived in NJ nor ever considered living there in the past.] [more inside]

What's my Job Title?

Currently, I'm the "Office Manager" for a large, family-run restaurant that employes 170+ people. I am in charge of Design (internal/external, web, print, etc - this is actually what I have my degree in), limited PR (we have an external firm that I liaise with, I do all social media and PR asset management), Bookkeeping/Payroll/Accounts Payable, Limited HR (onboarding new employees, helping to create and maintain training materials, but no hiring/firing/discipline), IT/Tech Support, Project Management, Answering Phones/Reservations, etc etc... oh, and managing the actual office, too (ordering supplies, filing, printing menus, fixing the copier, what-have-you). I need a better job title. [more inside]

Dealing with parties when you don't like parties.

Every year, my work holds a big party to which we invite all our clients - the idea is we get to meet them and get to know them as people rather than voices on the phone. How to deal with hours worked on my days off

I work full-time in an office of a half-dozen people (in Ontario, Canada if it is relevant). One of the duties in my current job is to reply to general emails to my company's main address and to check the general voice mail... if someone calls after hours or chooses not to be put through to an individual, they can still leave a voice mail on the main number, and the main email is info@[business].ca which gets maybe five or ten questions a day. At the request of my boss, I do these things a couple of times a day, including on weekends and holidays. I am fine with this and I understand the reasoning - sometimes people write or call with a time-sensitive question. This usually takes me ten minutes a day tops (once in while there is a bigger thing and it may be an hour on those days), but it seems not entirely fair that I do this with zero compensation for having to be available for work on my days off. How best to negotiate what might be a better arrangement for this? Or should I even bother? [more inside]

Professional jobs that require night or shift work?

My parents have always worked night shifts as a nurse at a geriatric support centre, and as a mail sorter for the post office. They make enough money. They've made their schedules work for them, and also raised 4 kids while doing so. Because of their shift work, they do get a lot of time off-- maybe working double shifts sometimes, or three 12-hour shifts in a row, but then they get 3 days off. They also tend to know their schedules a month ahead of time. I do not work well in a 9-5 M-F schedule, so I'd like to know what are other similar jobs to this. [more inside]

Discretion in job applications

I would like to send out job applications to companies that are close to my own company. I would also like to apply to companies that are working on joint projects with my company -- where I am one of the representatives of my current company in the project/collaboration.
