How to leave work for job interviews?

I was just placed on a civil service test list, and canvassing letters and interview offers are coming in - which is good. Not so good is that I'm working full time and I'm having trouble figuring out how to get out of work for an hour here and an hour there to go on these interviews without raising any of my bosses' suspicions. Any tried and true ways to be out of work for an hour or so, more than once a week? [more inside]

Can I gracefully exit a management role? Should I?

I took a management role at a fast-growing startup for a mix of good and bad reasons. Eight months into the new role, I'm realizing my boss & I have very different styles, that the expected "management perspective" and accompanying behaviors feel itchy. I don't want to leave the place — I just don't think I like a situation where I'm constantly managing up, down and sideways. How can I get out of this without having to leave altogether? I Didn't Promise You a Rose Garden

Boss told me if I took a course she would increase my pay. She paid for the course on the condition that I would continue to work there for a set amount of time. There are witnesses who agree that she did promise an increase. [more inside]

I've forgotten how to work.

I'm a dissertating graduate student who, due to a whole host of factors over the course of a few years, has basically forgotten how to work. I spend days upon days at home, sometimes doing things and sometimes just hanging out, but the things I do are rarely dissertation-related (or they could be broadly work related, but aren't note-taking or actually writing the thing). As a result I have no dissertation progress to speak of, very limited levels of committee support remaining, and a bleak outlook. I used to be a real go-getter. Please help me get my head and ass wired together. [more inside]

O.O

How do you deal with increasing anxiety and distraction at work caused by someone behind you who can see your monitor and generally watch you work all day? I am not goofing off, but I do use my computer heavily and variously and feel as though they are often watching me. They have never commented on what's on my screen, but other people stopping by their desk have. Unsure if I should seek clarification on workplace procedures

Sorry if I am vague. Other than seeming to lack leadership qualities my current boss has been nothing but pleasant (I mention this so it doesn't seem like I am questioning whether to do this because of my bosses behavior). I have been working at this place for a few months now. Basically I am unclear on several policies and procedures that are critical to my ability to do my job. I tend to overthink things but at the same time I feel like not understanding leads to a more stressful and possibly not correctly executed set of working conditions. My supervision in this job is nearly non existent and I am somewhat free to act as I see fit but my boss has said he wants things done a certain way. Going further this wasn't a failure to pay attention on my part . There was significant training done by the company but none of it focused on this area. Basically my issue is should I sit down with my boss and seek clarification on a number of points ( something which would probably take 15 minutes) when technically I can do my job without the clarification but it might mean my work may not be in line with my bosses, the companies, or common sense expectations?
