I interviewed for a remote programming gig recently, and they requested a trial contract before making a final offer. I'd be hired as a long-term remote contractor (year+, 100% telecommuting), not an employee. I have some questions:

I'm wondering about what measures can be taken to increase gender diversity in male-dominated workplaces. For women who work in male-dominated fields - how did your company's culture contribute to creating an appealing work environment for you? What can be done to build and foster this kind of culture?

After a long period of not-working and contracting, I finally got a job as a web developer. Now I think I'd prefer another job, but I don't feel my skills or my self as a whole are good enough to land something better. Should I job hunt anyway, should I make getting job-hunt-worthy task number one, or can I afford to stay still for a year and accomplish other goals?

Why do I always take the long route when programming? I'm no master programmer - but - I feel like I'm missing something. I'm constantly finding myself trying to tear down one wall or another, in attempt to resolve some issue, only to find halfway into it, that there was a ten minute fix right in front of me. Complications fade away, problem solved.

I'll be graduating next August with a Computer Science degree and will be looking for an entry-level programming job. I am very comfortable with Java and reasonably comfortable with C++ and Visual Basic. I do not have any work experience in programming and won't have the chance to gain any before graduation(the unconventional schedule of my current job is what is allowing me to finish my degree in the first place). What can I do over the course of the next year to boost my employability? What other skills should I try to pick up over the next year?
