Hourly contract rate for SQL in the UK?

I'm an American in the UK and have been hired to do some freelance work for a tech company in Northern England. I'm not sure what to charge for my hourly rate. I am working in SQL, writing queries and turning them into data visualizations for the web (using Ruby and Javascript/HTML). I am very junior, although quite competent at SQL; I'm coming up (and quickly) in the other areas. [more inside]

How can a Canadian on a working holiday visa in Japan get a work visa to stay longer?

Always desiring to experience living in Japan, I moved in the country from Canada almost a year ago on a working holiday visa, which will expire next month. My life here is stable so far, including a job at a company willing to sponsor me for a work visa. I want to live in Japan for a longer period, but the problem is I don't seem to meet the requirements for a visa. I am aware that getting married is the easiest way, but unfortunately, I do not have that possibility. Is there anything I can do to stay and work in Japan longer? [more inside]

How to stop torrents at work?

I'm sure this question will not make me the most popular student at the dance, but is there a way to identify (via IP) machines running BitTorrent clients within an internal network (ie. work)? My company has around 50 employees, and the old, "Please don't torrent at work" doesn't seem to be doing much good anymore. It brings our email and web browsing to a near standstill, and dropping by the "usual suspects" is not only tiresome, but doesn't seem to find all the sources of traffic any longer. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

What to include in techie resumé

My friend seeks a job as a web developer focusing on the creation of web applications. I'm trying to put together a resumé for him that will showcase his considerable tech skills, but I'm not sure which specifics to include, which ones to leave out, or how to phrase the information in a manner palatable to potential employers. He recently moved to Wisconsin and will probably soon be moving to Vermont, so he doesn't know any other local geeks who can provide info on the lay of the land. [more inside]

Is getting an MBA a good investment?

Is an MBA worth getting? I've seen a lot of talk to the contrary lately, and most of the MBAs that I know don't seem to be doing work now that particularly requires an MBA, so I'm wondering if it's just a waste of time and money compared to just gaining more work experience? I was thinking of getting an MBA as a way to shift into less pure-IT related work, since I can't seem to get rehired as a developer after a long absence.
