I'm considering setting up my company's website on a blogging platform. Since I'm a heavy user of Google services, I was considering using Blogger, especially since it is free. (I use it for my personal blog.) However, my partner said self-hosted Wordpress is more flexible and more professional. Is Wordpress truly better than Blogger? If so, what are the main selling points of using Wordpress over Blogger in 2012?

Help me fix my Wordpress theme so that my left and right sidebar appears in the source code after the main content as I've changed themes and lost 90% monthly visitors because of the duplicate content coming up first now (there's like 80 links in my sidebar).

I have an old WordPress 1.5.2 installation. I'd like to either export the posts to a new domain/fresh install or upgrade the current install. I expected that to be easy, but getting my posts out of my existing blog does not appear to be simple at all. I only care about the posts and titles: I'd be fine with losing existing comments.

I have a self-hosted WordPress blog in which every post is an image (with alt-text) and a single comment. I'd like to move this material over to a Tumblr blog. The site has two years' worth of material, with about three posts per week.
I've done a Google search and it seems there are three methods for migrating WordPress content to Tumblr. All involve exporting the WordPress Blog to XML first, which I've done.

I want to set up a personal web space - a blog, some articles and vanity e-mail address type of affair. Unfortunately, I've spent too long using software instead of making it and all my web design and programming knowledge is a hopelessly outdated. What does a person need to know these days if they want to register a domain and set up a not overly complex web page and blog with a service provider who is slightly more scrupulous than the average Batman villain?

I'm in the process of transferring my Wordpress blog to a new host. So far everything is working just fine, except the media library.
I copied /wp-content/uploads/* onto the new system. I see the folders and files on the new server via SFTP, but WP doesn't seem to notice them. Is there some sort of "cache refresh" trick? Do I actually have to manually go in and load all the individual images from the past year via the UI?

I am too disorganized to blog consistently, but I'm also way too verbose for Twitter. Is there a blogging platform that exists somewhere between these two extremes? Is there a platform that's kind of like Facebook as a blog? Do I want a Tumblr?

Does anyone have any tips for dealing with less savvy users of web-based WYSIWYG products like TinyMCE (which Wordpress uses) and/or improving the usability on the back-end? The best users I've worked with seem to universally use the HTML editor, while the rest fight with the visual editor to varying degrees of success.

I would like to add a paypal 'Buy Now' button for a single item to a self-hosted wordpress website, with a drop-down selection list. I've created the button in Paypal but the code becomes messed once the html is inserted in the wordpress page - the options are all visible as if in a table, not in a drop-down. I've googled but can't find the solution.

I've been brought onboard by a startup company to fix up their social networking website, which was built for them in Joomla and is a complete glitch-filled mess, both front and back end. After upgrading to the latest Joomla version, the site has more or less broken (does not function at all at the front end). Should I attempt to patch up and rebuild this mess in Joomla, or start over with a better choice of CMS?

I'm a graphic designer who does a bit of freelance web stuff, but I’m by no means a web developer. I’ve recently started building teensy (a few pages, a blog, a basic paypal shopping cart plugin) Wordpress sites with customized themes for some tech averse self-employed/freelancer friends. I'm considering offering to host these on my web space for a small fee. What could go wrong? A lot of things, I'm sure... I just don't know what. Have you hosted multiple sites for other people on your web space? If so, what do you wish you'd known going in?
