Reverse engineering Wordpress functionality

I've been working on making a mirror of a site that we're using for another project. The original site is working fine, but a few of the custom tweaks that the former webmaster made aren't carrying over. One of these is a box on the post creation screen that allows / disallows others to remix (pictured at the link) your work. We're working off of a BuddyPress framework. Any ideas about how to find the template file that's calling this? More details inside... [more inside]

Free (or cheap), clean, minimal, mostly text Wordpress theme

I'd like a place to put up a CV and occasionally some writing. I'm looking for a minimal, clean, and if possible free Wordpress theme. In terms of references, I really like the look of Grantland articles (for example, the first thing I clicked on their frontpage). I love the running header, the minimal navigation, the centered space for an article, the white space, the blocking, and the running foot-notes on the side.

Tracking user activity on a Wordpress blog

Wordpress question: Is it possible to generate a report on which users are the most active on the site in terms of interactions, click-throughs, and time logged-in? I see a few plugins which claim to do this, but it seems like something you'd have had to have installed since the time you wanted to start keeping track. Is there something I can use which will find this information automatically?

Wordpress / Buddypress question about user roles

I have a Buddypress site set up with all of my contributors set up as Authors. This has worked well, up until this point, where the users want to make groups. However, the Author role doesn't have permission to create groups. I've used several role modifying plugins to try to switch it on, but none of the plugins have this option available. The current plugin I'm using for role moderation (called 'Members') has an option to add in new Wordpress actions to allow/disallow, but I'm not sure what this would be called. Further data about installed plugins, versions, etc. available upon request. For the moment let's say that simply changing all user's roles to something else isn't an option.

Oh, so you're flipping videos now? That's cool.

We're using iPads for users to post videos directly to our Wordpress site through the official Wordpress app. The videos are being recorded on the iPads, and posted through the app's media upload feature. When we do this through the HTML4 options (which uses embed) there are no controls to start the video playing. When we do this through HTML5 the videos are rotated 90 degrees. Any ideas what's causing this video weirdness and how to fix it? [more inside]

Actually PHP, your mom is an unexpected T_ELSE

PHP / Wordpress filter: I need to hide some aspects of my site behind if ( is_user_logged_in() ) functions, but being a newbie to PHP I don't think I'm getting the syntax right. Specific code is beneath the jump. [more inside]

In this week's edition of 'codacorolla struggles with php'...

Wordpress question: I have two different types of post categories on the site that I'm designing. Is it possible through plug-ins (or otherwise) to create links from the front page to the posting screen so that either one of the categories is pre-selected for the post? [more inside]

Buying a good theme

I'm currently shopping for pay themes for a Wordpress blog. A lot of theme websites have previews for their themes, but are rather limited in their implementation. Are there good review/forum sites for themes that aren't SEO backwash, or is there an effective search method to find sites that use a particular theme? [more inside]

Wordpress Theme Work

I'm new to PHP and Wordpress development, but have experience working with HTML, CSS, Javascript, and XML. I'm currently building a Wordpress theme for a project and I'm feeling a little out of my depth. What is a good starting point for doing theme work? [more inside]

Wordpress Workflow

I'm designing a custom Wordpress theme as part of a project. In addition to the typical Wordpress install, there's also going to be a social media plug-in on top of it (which has already been picked out and installed by another member of the project). This is the most complicated bit of web development that I've done, so I'm curious: what sort of workflow should I set up to make things easy on myself? [more inside]
