Bogus web site registrations

I have a web site using Wordpress and a forum plug-in (Simple-Press) that's been around for awhile and has become fairly popular. All of a sudden I've begun getting at least 3 to 6 bogus user registrations each day that are coming from IP addresses in Russia and eastern Europe. I don't really know why or how concerned I should be. They don't need to register to post comments on my blog and Akismet is almost 100% effective at getting rid of comment spam. They're also either not trying to post spam on my forum or they can't get past the Captcha/challenge it uses. [more inside]

Help me figure out how my site got hacked - and what to do...

My website got hacked the other night; a piece of code was inserted that generated spam. I'm technical enough to have found the offending code, and I simply removed it, but I'm baffled as to how the code got inserted in the first placeā€¦. (more inside) [more inside]

How do I cure my Wordpress blog of this spam infection for good?

I have two Wordpress blogs on the same server, both of which have become exposed to some sort of vulnerability whereby occasionally the header file will be filled with JavaScript links and mentions of various enlargement techniques and erectile pharmaceuticals. I can delete the links but eventually they come back. I have closed the sites to comments, reinstalled the themes, reinstalled Wordpress and installed antispam systems but the vulnerability must lie in some part of the site (eg a previous comment or one of the scripts) where it can be re-used even if I update Wordpress. I don't have technical skills, so how can I find the source of this threat? If I have to install Wordpress from scratch, how can I export the content of the sites to the new install without bringing the spam with it?

Does anyone recognize this WordPress plugin? Or know how to effectively the pingbacks it spawns?

My blog is getting bombarded by a new kind of pingback spam. The pingbacks are produced by a WordPress plugin that appears to mine the web for links related to blog content, which then triggers a pingback notification. Can anyone help me identify the plugin, so I can possibly work to block the pingbacks? [more inside]

Spammers III: The Takeover

I have a Wordpress site. In spidering the site, and coming up with the little synopsis underneath the title, Google, Bing and Yahoo all believe that it's not a personal Web site but a spammy list of prescription drugs for sale. I don't understand why. [more inside]

Reinstalling Wordpress to Dump Spam Comments?

WordpressFilter: Haven't blogged in about three months, and am considering a return at the same URL, but don't want to inherit all my old spam comments. Would deleting the Wordpress installation at that address then re-installing it essentially reset the spam, allowing me to better control it this time? FWIW, I've been using Akismet, etc., to monitor and catch most spam but would like as clean a slate as possible.

Wordpress spam comments don't disappear from Recent Comments

I have a WordPress blog (linked on my profile page if that's helpful). It is set up to notify me when there are comments on postings. I've been getting spam comments and deleting them. They disappear from the post where they appeared. However, they DON'T disappear from the "recent comments" module on my homepage. This module contains a link to the spam URLs they are propagating. I know some SQL but almost no PHP. Is this a common problem? Any suggestions?
