My dad found this wooden object at a market. He's quite delighted with it, and wants to know what it is. It was labeled a "treen" - which the internet tells me is a "generic name for small handmade functional household objects made of wood"- so I presume the seller didn't know what it was either. Our best guess is that it's a tool for crushing/flattening/pounding something (cracking nuts?) - but we'd love a more definitive answer. Any ideas? [more inside]
It is hard rubbish collection day where I live and today I picked up some wooden cubes that some one was throwing out. Picture here. The boxes are sealed cubes, light, with hand holds on either end, apparently intended to be carried, but not opened. My question: what would they have been intended for?
We are moving and I need to get a new swingset for my kids. They love our current one, but I got it off of craigslist, so I don't have a brand or anything to look for another version of it. I looked online, but the selection is ridiculous so I was wondering if people had any particular brands to look for or avoid to help me narrow things down. Thanks! (details about what we want in a set are inside) [more inside]
Where can I find sturdy wooden crates? Like fruit crates? I know they have ones at Michaels and JoAnn fabrics, but they are little flimsy, more for crafts. Where can I find a reliable source of decently sturdy wooden crates? [more inside]

I'm looking for an object I once saw a picture of. It was an antique tool that was, I think, described as a japanese jade vise, or something similar. It was rectangular in shape, and consisted of a number of stacked wooden wedges that could be slid in and out in relation to one another to form an opening in which a gem could be securely held by the pressure of the wedges.

I am considering a wooden ship model as a housewarming gift, the giftee just bought a grand old Connectcut home on the water and loves sailing ships--and has nothing like this at all. I know nothing about these models, but see that there are many sellers online. I am willing to spend money for something that is great. It appears that models of classic America's Cup yachts are popular (and do appear impressive). Any suggestions? what ships are best? Ok to buy online? a good gift?

The great musical-instrument-on-plane paradox. How do you prepare (what case[s] do you buy and what strategies do you develop) when you need to travel on many different kinds/scales of airlines, with a delicate wooden instrument that MAY or MAY NOT be allowed as carry-on baggage (depending on circumstance, how full the plane is, and how much or little the inspectors care that it looks large, solid and "middle eastern")?
