Women's Preventative Health Charity

A group wants to donate to a breast cancer charity. I would feel personally better about sending funds to a charitable group that focuses on forming good preventative health habits/increasing health care access/improving health practices for women. [more inside]

Is there a name for this (awesome) treatment I got at my OBGYN?

At my last annual exam, my OBGYN spent 20 minutes talking to me about how I was doing. We vented about the election, and she asked me about my kids, my marriage, childcare, whether I was getting "me time" and self-care. She seemed really interested in my mental health and even suggested types of therapy to pursue and shared her own coping mechanisms. It was the least bad I'd felt since the election. I'm now remembering that she was like that throughout my pregnancy as well, asking whether I was going to have help after my third child was born, what my plan was, etc. Is there a name for this type of patient engagement? Gee, my underwear smells disgusting

Ouch and ouch.

I'm a woman and I have occasional pain in the area of my lower left back and what might be my left ovary and reproductive areas in general. I haven't gone to my doctor about it because the symptoms seem kind of vague, but darnit, it hurts. What information should I give her? (And do you have any ideas about what's going on?) How to explain time off for IVF treatment

After several years of unsuccessfully trying to get pregnant, my husband I were approved for IVF treatment (through NHS, we are in the UK). If things go to plan I could be starting treatments as soon as end of next month, but depending on my cycles, possibly the following month. Once my treatment starts there's a lot of appointments for scans and of course, egg collection and implantation, all within the span of 3-4 weeks. How should I explain this at work? How do I get this infection to go away and stay away?

I have had a recurring bacterial vaginosis and yeast infection for over a year. I treat it, it goes away, and a few months later, it's back. To make matters more complicated, I don't have the typical symptoms. What originally lead me to think something was up is that I have to pee constantly, so I thought I had a UTI (which I have never had before). Turns out, I had a vaginal infection, and no UTI. It's been a year of this and I'm getting really frustrated. I'm seeing my ob/gyn next week about this, so I am not looking to metafilter as a substitute for medical advice. I want to know if there's anything I should be discussing with my doctor that I haven't already, or if I should be pushing for a referral to a specialist. More details and TMI below. [more inside]

Is there a Vaginal Ring HRT option to treat and improve bone density?

Do any of the Vaginal Rings that are available to women for HRT (Estring, FemRing) work for increasing bone mineral density and preventing osteoporosis? I know estradiol HRT via pills or the patch does, but I can't find any evidence to show that the vaginal rings have the same effect. Please help me!

Burning stinging vulva, what to do

I have had a burning/stinging vulva on and off for over a year and it's driving me crazy. I've seen lots of different healthcare professionals and none of them have been able to identify it. Should I be more concerned about the giant cyst growing in me?

I had an ultrasound today because I've been experiencing a lot of ovarian pain, and I've long suspected PCOS and never had it comfirmed. They called with the results to say that I do indeed have PCOS, with many small follicular cysts on my left ovary, but in addition they found either a) 2 complex septated cysts both 4 cm in diameter or b) 1 giant complex septated cyst (giant is my word, not theirs). They can't tell if its joined or not. My question is: is my doctor taking this seriously enough? [more inside]

Abnormal pap smear and colonoscopy

HPV has been discussed a couple times here before, but I have a new question. A few months ago my pap smear came back abnormal, and soon I'm going in for a colposcopy. I tried doing some research on this, but internet resources weren't very detailed, and I don't know if I have a good doctor (I'm a student on an HMO). I'm wondering: how painful is the biopsy/LEEP they sometimes do after a colposcopy? How likely is it they'll even do a biopsy or LEEP if the test came back with a mild dysplasia? And how common is it for a woman to have to go back for colposcopies later in her life, if her first abnormal pap was at 22? Does the virus just usually go away, or does it get worse? Any OB-GYNs out there?
