Seeking literary fiction with a transient, often solitary, female hero, please! [more inside]
We got Carrie Underwood's Before He Cheats, we got Dixie Chicks' Goodbye Earl; I would like more suggestions of country songs sung by ladies about exacting revenge or just seriously fucking up some no-good man.
I love programming/sysadmin case studies, I love women's perspectives, and I'm swinging back into listening to podcasts. Help me find more of what I love? [more inside]
Boy meets Girl. Then Boy does, what exactly? [more inside]
The style of blouse that the woman is wearing in this stock photo looks very flattering on me. I have one blouse like that, but I'd like to buy more. What search terms can I use to find them, or what stores should I check out?
I am tired of novels that have an enigmatic woman at the center of the novel. Can you recommend some books to me where all of the female characters actually act like real people? [more inside]
Second sock question in under an hour! This one is about ladies' socks though. [more inside]
Anecdotally, it seems clear to me that women are far more likely to move to a new city for her husband's job than vice versa. But I'd like some hard numbers! There has to have been research on this, but I have no idea how to find it. [more inside]
I'm a lady. I have a job interview coming up for which I was advised to wear a suit. I can't find my real suit, (may have donated it) but I doubt if it fit me anymore anyway. What I do have is a black sheath dress, a nice navy blue blazer, a nice grey blazer, a nice grey pencil skirt that is a slight mismatch with the grey blazer, and a pair of pants that's also a slight mismatch with the grey blazer, and a selection of those nice decorative shells that women wear under suits. I think I have black pumps somewhere, and I also have some nice looking oxford heels. Can I make something work with what I have or should I go try to find a suit? In addition, opaque or sheer tights? This is for a non-management web design job for which I thought suits were passe.
Hey! I'm looking for movies about women who want to be high class and/or rich and famous. Not a "Cinderella" type story but one that is darker... Thanks!
Our book club is doing a "Lean In free swim" -- everyone will read Lean In* plus one other book of their choice on the topic of gender and work. What would be some good choices for the second book? [more inside]
Going back to work after maternity leave, but a size bigger so I have to get new clothes. I hate clothes shopping and I don't have time to browse the stores anyway. My work wardrobe staples are bootcut jeans and fitted jersey long-sleeve t-shirts with a nice-looking print. I got jeans but I'm missing the top part! [more inside]
I am looking for TV commercials from the 1980s that feature mothers, women and girls conforming to yuppie, conservative, WASPy ideals of beauty and behavior. [more inside]
Which other productions have taken on the model of The Vagina Monologues - first-person stories about gender, sexuality, and womanhood? (I'm interested in those that share the model but have custom material, not necessarily the script of VMon as performed by specific demographics.) [more inside]
Are there any journals in existence that were kept by women or girls who worked for Thomas Edison in the 1880s/1890s? More inside. [more inside]
I am an agnostic that really likes the calming effect of prayer, but am totally not interested in the monotheism or taking organized religion very seriously in general. Do you have prayer advice for me, and what sort of agnostic or polytheistic prayers (or meditative practices) do you take part in? Resources and recommendations are welcomed! [more inside]
I have read Drinking, A Love Story, and Smashed, and would like to read more like those. [more inside]
Please give me your ideas for women to follow on Twitter. [more inside]
How do you tactfully put a mean girl in her place without stooping to her level? Especially when she's your own cousin. [more inside]
Just saw Mona Lisa Smile for the first time and loved the acting in it. Now I'm on the hunt for great recommendations for all-women or prominently women ensemble movies. Release the hounds!
I'm a huge fan of standup comedy, comedy podcasts, and so on, but I'm starting to get tired of what feels like an endless stream of life-in-LA anecdotes. I don't live in LA, and I don't really care about LA. Surely there are funny people who want to say funny things in Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Kansas City, St. Louis....right? Nationally famous comedians are great, but I'm looking more for regional folks that I can see often, locally, and preferably not for $50 a seat... [more inside]
A question on vocabulary. Why are some Olympic sports listed as "ladies" events, while others are "women's"? Ski jumping is for ladies. Ice Hockey is for women.
I have a giant head, lots of big, curly hair, and a fairly round face. I cannot find a winter hat that fits my head well when the curls are free--usually I have it jammed down and look kind of like a poodle with the curls sticking out, and then it slowly creeps up on my head and I look like a Conehead (and it falls off easily if I lean over when shoveling). I've long avoided the winter hat problem by just getting a good earband, but the Polar Vortex II is just too much and I really need better protection from the artic misery out there. Please help me find a winter hat that will fit when I have my hair down, MeFi! Bonus if you suggest something that might be flattering as well as functional.
Two women in our mid-20's with some international travel experience. No specific budget or length of time designated yet - more info on that inside. Multi-country or multi-city definitely an option. History, art, and food are of interest. [more inside]
This morning I was thinking about how in the movie Housesitter, Goldie Hawn's character wears a very limited number of pieces of clothing combined in a variety of different ways. My mom pointed this out to me at a very impressionable age, and noted how this was much more realistic than infinite wardrobes. I'm wondering what other other movies have an obviously finite wardrobe for a lead female character?
I've just had an article published nationally, and oh boy is that addictive and fun! I want to do more, so I need ideas to pitch! I'm looking for some tweeters and some Facebook groups and posters to follow who will have awesome kink/womens'/sex-positive/sex-work/trans/lgbt/poly/etc news, criticism and analysis. Feminist and socialist feeds also a plus. Many thanks, hive mind!
I'm suddenly overcome by the urge to take a break from novels and read some interesting memoirs by women. I have read "Don't lets Go to the Dogs Tonight" by Alexandra Fuller and I really loved it because of how richly she described the setting, the humor and the tragedies her family went through. I felt like I was there. And that's really what I'm looking for- memoirs by female writers that are so alive that I feel like I'm there. Mefi Readers, what amazing memoirs can you recommend that have made you feel that way???
I'm looking for recommendations for forums, blogs, Tumblrs, whatever that focus on sex-positive content, specifically spaces that are welcoming to feminist women. [more inside]
I realized recently that a good 90% (at least) of the music I like features male singers. Which then led me to realize that I have fairly specific requirements/tastes when it comes to female singers. Help me find more women who rock! [more inside]
I AM a woman. I don't generally like hanging out with women. Suggestions? [more inside]
I love Kelly Link, Jeannette Winterson, Margaret Atwood, Karen Russell, and Aimee Bender. I would like to read more books like this. Women authors only please, and I'd also love to have more queer and of color authors in my library. Thanks !
Most of the music I listen to is by men, and about men. The songs I have from female singers are either somewhat depressing or about love. I would love to get recommendations for uplifting songs by strong women that are not about love.
Winter coat filter: Hello minds of mefi, I am looking for an uber warm women's parka. Complexity level: I am six feet tall and size 4. Brands like North Face are great, but the sleeves are too short and waist is too wide. So I am looking for quality brads that I could look into that would fit a tall, slim woman. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I'm looking for songs about two women running away/hitting the road, preferably on the run from the law. [more inside]
As a working woman where do you shop for your clothes? [more inside]
I've been in the mood for media with interesting villains and antiheros lately, and it suddenly occurred to me that I'd like to see some interesting female villains. But I don't want them to be Disney-villain-esque women whose motives are defined by their femininity. Suggestions? [more inside]
Ladies: what are your sources for cool and/or geeky t-shirts these days? [more inside]
I switched from doing cardio to lifting weights at the gym, mainly because I LOVE IT. However, despite every website telling me that, as a woman, I won't get "big and bulky," I think I might be. I've gone up 1-2 clothing sizes, my butt has exploded, jackets now seem narrow in the chest ... It would be one thing if, standing nude in the mirror, I saw a 6-pack staring back at me, but I don't. It doesn't "look" like I've lost much body fat at all (but I can definitely tell that I've gained muscle - I've got a bicep! For the first time ever!). So, my question: will one day my muscle mass get large enough that my metabolism will rev up and my body fat will melt away? What are other ladies' experiences with beginning weight training and that effect on their body? (and I mean REAL weight training - bench presses of over 100 lbs, for instance - not lifting a 5 lb weight)
Can you recommend durable, somewhat fitted, not outrageously expensive work pants that will fit a small woman (5'0", 100 lbs, athletic build)? And by work I don't mean office-appropriate: I'm a carpenter and I spend my days at a grimy construction site. [more inside]
Is there a service that will let me plug in things I want ("empire waist dresses", "cardigans") that will send me deals for items I like without bothering me with other crap? [more inside]
What are some good blogs written by women in the field of advertising? [more inside]
I am looking for the female equivalent to Tycho Brahe, someone who's life was full of both achievement and adventure. A woman who has a list of great deeds (such as discovering a supernova) and also great stories (like getting a moose drunk, or losing their nose in a duel over maths) Is there such a woman (Well, I know there must have been, but more accurately has history recorded such a woman)
I want to wear long-legged underpants, to minimize thigh chafing and eliminate wedgies, but I'm not sure how. If you are someone with a large-ish body and hips who wears something like boxer briefs, can you tell me your secrets? [more inside]

I have to get mammograms every 6 months or so. Due to past sexual trauma, I get badly triggered and end up dissociating (not that big of a deal) then freaking out. Have developed some ways of making this all bearable (take the full day off work, take a friend who has specific instructions about what to do when, etc.). My therapist suggested I try to find a mammogram office that is used to dealing with this type of issue and may have other suggestions and be willing to work with me on making it less stressful. I've been searching for a series of recent paintings (I think they're paintings, but I can't be sure) to no avail. Here's what I remember: they're of well-dressed women who are peeling back their skin to reveal viscera. I recall that they're by a Spanish artist and they're fairly recent. Please help me hivemind, all my google searches are coming up empty.
I can't find an article (or an informal study) about the gender differences between a group of grad students. The male students were consistently doing better because they went to the professor and asked for more responsibilities (like teaching a class), while the female students thought the professors would come to the female students when the professors thought the female students were ready. What are some innovative programs for women and families that you've seen, heard of, accessed, or wished for? I am on the board of directors for a small women's organization in a small city in Canada, and we are tired of the workshop model of community development. I want to start some new programs that have tangible results. [more inside]
