Examples of ambitious women in fantasy lit?

After finishing the penultimate novel in The Queen of the Tearling trilogy I have a sudden desperation to read about ambitious and competent women in fantasy. I'm thinking anywhere along the lines of the ruthlessness of Cersei Lannister to the intelligence of Hermione Granger. I'm not looking for books that follow the familiar Young Adult trend of someone being thrust into a responsibility they are reluctant to take on. I want to read about women who are driven and set out to accomplish what they want, with no preference to YA or adult fantasy.

Competence Porn

I love Leverage and I want more competence porn, especially ones centering women of all sorts and men of color. Happy endings only! Bonus if the people involved don't get into major ethical violations at the beginning and ending of each season and then pretend like it doesn't matter, à la Bones and NCIS. Double bonus if it includes the open ended character development Leverage gives me.

How can I as a Canadian, help Americans?

I'm a Canadian woman, who is absolutely heartsick at the outcome of last night's US election. I've never had to worry about being the target of violence based on my race, gender identity or religion, being deported, or losing any of my rights, and I want to help my neighbours who are worried about those things. Poetry written by women, for women

So I recently realized that a favorite poet of mine, Alice Duer Miller, published one more book of poems than I thought she had. I have been consequently wallowing in feminist poetry with snappy meter and rhyme for the last couple of days. Now that I'm done with my book, I'm looking for more poetry that strikes a chord, especially poetry by and about women. Where should I look, and who should I read? [more inside]

Fall/winter fashion/grooming for women - Oregon/cold office filter.

I just moved back to the Willamette Valley after a couple-year stint in year-round warm climates. While living in Oregon I never quite got the hang of constant clothing layering and dampness. I am determined this time around to look fashionable while staying warm and dry. It seems like everyone is perpetually wearing outdoor gear (REI/Patagonia/North Face rain layers, practical waterproof clogs, sporty-wear) and I'm just not into doing that - I want to look put-together and stylish. How can I go about doing this? More snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Closet purged...now what?!

After my weekend spent purging my closet of BAGS full of clothes to donate that are too young, too cheap, too ill fitting, and just too plain ugly, I now find myself with a few holes and thin areas in my (blessedly) more manageable wardrobe. I'd like to fill those holes (slowly, eventually) with pieces that are classic, high quality, and (unicorn!) ethically produced (or at least MORE ethically produced than many major brands). Problem: I LOATHE shopping and am a style/fashion amateur. Where should be looking? What should I be looking for? Details inside. [more inside]

Lately, I've noticed that I am very passionate about things having to do with sexuality, especially women’s sexuality and health. What careers exist related to this passion? So far I've thought of a nurse practitioner specializing in women's health, a certified nurse midwife, a pelvic physical therapist, an ob/gyn, and an industrial designer specializing in sexuality or women's health (if that job even exists). Effective home remedies for hair loss in women?

Do you have any good home remedies for hair loss in women? I have noticed that my hairline is receding somewhat. My part looks a bit wider and you just see a bit more of my scalp generally. I cannot identify a cause but it happened over the course of 4-8 months. I eat a good diet with plenty of protein (eggs, etc.). Thyroid tests normal. I have noticed a bit more hairs shed in the shower, but nothing that unusual. No hairs on the pillow, but some on the floor. Scalp okay but a bit of dandruff. I have been using a new hair color but I can't imagine it would cause my hair to fall out at the roots when rest of it is long and healthy looking. The loss is mostly at the temples and top third of my head. I used to have A LOT of hair. Any suggestions or home remedies are welcome!

Where can I find high quality, comfortable yet stylish clothing online?

I'm basically looking for the opposite of Forever 21 cheapy disposable stuff. I don't want designer fashion (and especially don't want their astronomical prices!), but I'd like clothes that I can wear to work or more casual shirts and dresses I could wear on the weekend. I used to shop at Ann Taylor and Banana Republic, and I still do on occasion, but I'm wondering if there are clothes that are higher quality that don't cost too much more. For example, Hanna Andersson's women's clothing intrigues me, especially the dresses in pima cotton.

Quality looking summer clothing for stay at home mom in HOT weather

Hi everyone, I am trying to figure out where to shop. I am an average sized woman, 5, 4" and I work part time in a school and have three young kids. I need things that coordinate and can more or less go between work and home...although I am in the stage where things get stained often!! I just tried stitch fix. I was so disappointed! The quality didn't seem to be great, the items looked like not great quality, one dress was way too long, three shirts looked like maternity on me, and one was polyester, which is awful in HOT, HOT weather where I live. I have no time to shop, but I don't want to go buy boxy looking clothing. I would like clothing that fits, and I can't figure out where to get this. I am spending way too much money shopping online and guessing just to have to pay all of the shipping fees to order and return! I have seen people recommend Boden, but others say sizes are inconsistent. I'm not a huge fan of JCrew. Thanks so much!!

girls chase boys chase girls

I see on AskMe all the time, whenever someone refers to an adult of the female gender as a "girl," several people will immediately pop up to sternly correct them. I've come to accept this as part of the site culture here, and keep it in mind for my own questions and comments, but it quite honestly seems bizarre based on my own life experience. I'm curious how common this view actually is, and whether people actually stick to it in real life. [more inside]

How do you know if a woman really likes you and is open to dating you?

This is probably something I should have figured out at 17 rather than 27, but here I am. My own experiences with women haven't been really positive. I was always a bit shy when I was younger. My dad was abusive so I ended up clinging to my mother. My mom is a good woman but she can be a bit controlling and overbearing at times. Plus she was a conservative muslim so it's not like she ever encouraged me to date and indeed actively discouraged me from doing so. [more inside]

What's reasonable to expect men to understand about women's experiences?

Specifically if a man identifies as feminist, should he then understand why a woman would take stories of sexism against other women personally? An ongoing source of conflict with a man in my life is that we'll discuss something sexist happening in the world and when I want a moment of commiseration about it like "man, that sucks, what a shitty world, I'm sorry" he won't give it and doesn't understand why I take it personally unless it is something that personally happens to me. Copywriter brainstorm: victory & legacy, but in mythology/cosmos/nature?

I'm trying to find one or two words to name a product collection that has been created to tell a story. The story is about moments that have changed women and sport, forever. Lots of different sports. The obvious words are things like legacy and legend and transcendence, victory and breakthroughs and limitless. I'm looking for one step more abstract: things like steel or supernova or phoenix or Atalanta (the Greek goddess who could outwrestle & outrun men). It could be a plant or an animal or an element or an industrial thing or a star, I'm seeking some words that convey badassery. Full disclosure: this might get made into an actual thing. I can't give you royalties or any credit. But I will give you my undying thanks and if I can manage it, I will mail you one of the things once it is made!
