Being Undermined at Work?

I am ostensibly the head of my department at work, which is a small startup. It’s also a small department, which is a subsection of, let’s say, Marketing. (It’s not Marketing.) Let’s call my department Widgets. My title is Head of Widgets. My team consists of one direct report whom I hired personally last summer and another direct report who was assigned to me from another department this past winter. I just found out that the VP of an entirely different section, say, Product, had an in-person interview with someone who would have the same title as my direct reports. I was not notified by my VP nor the other VP. I found out because one direct report saw it on the calendar and let me know. What now? [more inside]

girls chase boys chase girls

I see on AskMe all the time, whenever someone refers to an adult of the female gender as a "girl," several people will immediately pop up to sternly correct them. I've come to accept this as part of the site culture here, and keep it in mind for my own questions and comments, but it quite honestly seems bizarre based on my own life experience. I'm curious how common this view actually is, and whether people actually stick to it in real life. [more inside]

I'm sunk! Help me find a picture from a gender bias study.

There's a famous study of gender bias in which people were shown a picture of a person next to a sink....when the participants were told the person was female, they reported that she was washing dishes. When the participants were told the person was male, they reported that he was repairing the sink. But if it's such a famous study, why can't I find the picture? [more inside]

Little known American city perfect for a lone woman of colour tourist?

I would like to visit a city in the US that is not commonly thought of as a vacation destination, but still has a lot to offer a tourist. However, as a woman of colour that does not drive and will be travelling alone, I would like a safe and friendly choice. I would like ideas for places with a lot of history and fine dining, which are easy to travel by foot/ public transportation, and friendly towards different looking people. How can I help my new love interest not feel like 'the other woman'?

Recently separated after long but loveless marriage. Re-conected with an old colleague. Like her a lot. (I'm wise enough to differentiate btw a rebound and the real thing). Don't want to hide this relationship to friends and acquaintances. But she's worried about my kids running into us together and she doesn't want to be 'the (perceived) other woman' in their eyes. Singer-songwriter from the 1980s

A friend asked this question on Facebook just now, so I'm passing it on: Any clue who this is? Singer-songwriter. Came on the scene in the mid-eighties. A New Yorker. Titillated journalists dwelt on the fact that she left home at thirteen to move in with some African musicians, with her parents’ okay. Wrote a song about a dream in which she made love with her mother.

Experiences of females that started weightlifting?

I switched from doing cardio to lifting weights at the gym, mainly because I LOVE IT. However, despite every website telling me that, as a woman, I won't get "big and bulky," I think I might be. I've gone up 1-2 clothing sizes, my butt has exploded, jackets now seem narrow in the chest ... It would be one thing if, standing nude in the mirror, I saw a 6-pack staring back at me, but I don't. It doesn't "look" like I've lost much body fat at all (but I can definitely tell that I've gained muscle - I've got a bicep! For the first time ever!). So, my question: will one day my muscle mass get large enough that my metabolism will rev up and my body fat will melt away? What are other ladies' experiences with beginning weight training and that effect on their body? (and I mean REAL weight training - bench presses of over 100 lbs, for instance - not lifting a 5 lb weight)

truth/data backing up my intuition on gender marketing & music?

I'm about to ask a—perhaps sexist—question about the possible differences in how men and women—broadly speaking—identify with songs in marketing. But first, some set-up. As a branding exercise, I've been working on tackling a fictitious start-up consisting of two fashion retailer brands. One's a men's brand, and one's a women's brand, both part of the same fictitious umbrella corporation. When fleshing out the details of any brand, I like to immerse myself in the environment of that brand as much as possible, approaching it almost like a method actor approaches a role. Part of this process for me is usually creating a playlist of music I identify as feeling right for that brand. Songs I can imagine playing in the store itself. I noticed my thought process behind selecting tracks for the menswear and womenswear brands were entirely different, and I'm wondering if there's any underlying truth or data to support my intuitions. name that song

What is this music? It was a piece by a woman composer; I think she had won some sort of important contemporary classical music award or was otherwise highly acclaimed, but the piece had a very postmodern/rockish sensibility. The beginning is a repetitive, kind of Olympo-fascist horn line and I think it resolves into something messier partway through the song. It's very catchy despite being kind of cacophonous. There was a music video for it that somehow involved, I think, horses or pegasi, an MS Paint aesthetic, and things with bright red eyes. [more inside]

I'm 45, female and just discovered I'm bi. Now what?

I'm 45, female and just discovered I'm bi. Now what? Yes, I know it seems unlikely, and the nearest I can figure is my arousal/desire for every single one of my lovers has occurred after being desired, rather than finding someone hot in advance. I was married for a very long time, and possibly oblivious to any gay come-ons, in my premarital time. For the sake of the information I seek, can we please assume that I am correct - that I am bi, and that this wasn't just experimental? (which has been suggested to me by a straight friend).
