cold fiction for the hot summer?

Two of my favorite books for summer are "Winter's Tale" by Mark Helprin and "Smilla's Sense of Snow" by Peter Hoeg; I'd like suggestions for other (preferably hefty) novels with complex/absorbing story lines and wintry settings or themes to help me stay sane 'til September. Got an ice book to recommend?

throwing a wintry party

What are some cheap & lovely ideas for a winter-themed house-party here in Montreal? This weekend I'm hosting a party with WINTER as a theme. It's a bit of a daft theme, really, since there's already so much winter outside. But still: the idea is one of cosiness, shelter, taking warmth among friends. We've invited people to bring wintry and reassuring things, food & drink, scarves and sweaters - and fresh-baked cookies, mulled wine and hot cider are already definitely on the agenda.

But what else? What are some inexpensive ideas that will add just that extra spark of neato to the thing? Decorations (I can't seem to find xmas lights anywhere anymore)? Snacks? Little party secrets? All suggestions welcome!

What's that song?

What's that song? It's jangly and jazzy. I heard a portion of a song a few weeks ago, and I am dying to hear it again. It way jazzy and cheerful, the singer sounded like a black male. If I had to guess, I would think the song was older. I was thinking maybe Louis Armstrong, but he didn't sing it according to my research. There are horns, and it sounds like New Orleans jazz.

The song mentioned the word "wintry" several times. It went something like: "Come into my kitchen baby..." or, "step inside my kitchen baby." It mentioned "chopping vegetables." "Come inside my kitchen baby on this wintry, wintry day. We'll be choppin' vegetables..." I could be completely off, but this is how I remember it.

I have tried a Google search every which way on several occasions without luck.

Does this song ring a bell?
