Avoiding salt, but how can I keep inlaws from slipping on icy sidewalk?

What's your solution to the slippery winter sidewalks, preferably with the least impact to environment yet won't involve salt tracked in on the carpet? My in-laws are in town and the normal sidewalk and driveway shoveling is not going to be enough to keep them from slipping and falling. Here's my problem, we have kids and pets that will track in salt or de-icer all over the carpet.

Help Me Not Be SAD

I'm heading into my first Northern European winter, and all of my Berlin friends are regaling me with stories of months spent in a state of unrelenting malaise while developing alcohol problems and watching people throw themselves on to the Bahn tracks. I had problems with depression even when I lived in California, so I'm trying to develop a strategy for a suicide-free season. My primary question: will the sunbeds at my local pool constitute "light therapy"? [more inside]

Making hostel reservations is what this question is about.

I'm going to Europe in December/January. How do I make hostel reservations? I'll be traveling with one friend for about a week, and then by myself for another week and a half. My ideal hostel is warm, safe, and my stuff won't get stolen. We're not too afraid of roughing it, but we're going in the winter. So how (much) should we plan? [more inside]

Women and Winter Boot Help

I am looking for suggestions from all you intelligent, practical women out there regarding good, solid, moderately not-ugly snow boots. I live in Colorado and last winter was a nasty one and the one before, even worse and I am hanging up my knee-high, heeled black leather boots in favor of something less life-threatening. I used to swear I would never wear Uggs, but they have some cute styles this year and if they, or anything else, work for you, please, share. Under $200 is where I'm at. [more inside]

I am looking for recommendations on where to store and work on a motorcycle during the winter.

I have a motorcycle (1983 bmw r100) that I would like to protect from the harsh Massachusetts winter. I would also like to take this time to do some work on the bike. I do not have a garage so I need to rent a place. Am I able to do repairs on a vehicle in a self storage facility? If not can you think of the type of place that would allow this?

Help me outfit myself for my expedition to the Yukon. Well, not quite... but pretty close.

I'm about to go off to college- in Massachusetts, when I've lived in Texas my entire life. Ideally, I'd like not to freeze all winter, so I'm looking for your clothing/lifestyle advice geared to someone without a clue. Additionally, the only members of my family who've lived anywhere cold are male, while I've fairly recently embraced my dressing-like-a-girl options. Any advice about how women in Our Frozen Territories stay warm without giving up on looking nice is especially appreciated. [more inside]

How can I prevent this bird from migrating to, and damaging my house?

How can I prevent a bird from damaging my house? This exact bird (or family of birds) arrives every winter and uses the area under the roof above my window to next. I'm amazed by the stunning accuracy of the on-board navigation system on this crow-like bird, but it keeps ripping grates off my house and tossing insulation out.

Please offer suggestions for my house over a winter vacancy

I will be vacating my house for a few months over the winter. Aside from some house plants there will be nothing organic in the house to worry about. I was planning on turning the heat down to near 40. The house is not particularly well insulated so, if we get a serious cold snap, which is entirely likely,I would like to be prepared. I was thinking of turning off the water from the basement so the pipes will be empty, therefore not freeze. Is there any danger in this? Have you any other suggestions?

A Dry Christmas

I live in a humid / semi-tropical area where it never gets cold / snows. I have been here for 7 years and am very climatized. Now, whenever I go home to Michigan for Christmas, I get extremely 'dried out'.....my head feels dehydrated. I also get extremely tired / lethargic, and my internal thermometer gets thrown out of wack. What is going on here, and what can I do to alleviate the symptoms so I can have an enjoyable Christmas?
