I don't want to find a good men's scarf. I want to find the best men's scarf. It should be non-wooly/scratchy, smooth to the touch, long enough and thick enough to be wrapped around the neck and draped over the front to create an insulation layer while waiting on cold train platforms and be in a "masculine" pattern/color that would suit most coats. It should also be durable and long lasting, I want a scarf you could wear without comment for 20 years and then be buried with it. Where is this scarf?
My friend has 2 cars; a '77 Toyota sedan, and a "06 Subaru Forrester. Most of her driving is in the city and some highway. I have brought up the idea of winterizing them both; tuneups, de-icer, scraper, better wiper blades, windshield fluid, tires, more weight in the rear, sand, shovel, emergency flash, cell phone charger.......she has let me know the tires are not changing. Any ideas for making the cars, and her time in them, safer and more secure? Best battery? Oil?
I love to walk to and from work, all year long, and this requires a warm coat. My current coat doesn't keep me as reliably toasty as I'd like. I want something as warm as a Canada Goose coat, but I don't want that brand - i want something that every second person (in toronto) isn't already wearing, and that is (if possible) slightly more urban/stylish/flattering, and less sporty/functional looking. In particular, i really don't want a big logo/badge on it, as all Canada Goose coats do. I absolutely want a down-filled coat, though. (I've never seen a wool coat that is anywhere near as warm as down.) Bonus points for something available at a retail store in Toronto (or possibly NYC, which i visit occasionally), and that costs $700 or less.
What are some good places in Midtown and the Lower East Side to find men's winter gloves? I work in Midtown and want to hunt for some on my way home to Brooklyn this evening. [more inside]

I just moved to Evanston, IL from North Carolina. It snowed about an inch today, and unlike what I'm used to, everything didn't shut down in panic. What do I need to know in order to make my driving commute a safe one? [more inside]
So, it's been around -30c (-22f) daytime with windchill of -40c (-40f) and my shih tzu is protesting. This is his first winter in these temps. He is puppy pad trained, but will not use the pads during the day. For five days he has been relieving himself only at night (on training pad), and I am worried he will do damage to his health. We moved to Zurich earlier this year. Our apartment has a couple of balconies, both with raised gardens around the edges. When we moved in, they had been untouched for months and are full of scrubby things and stumps. I want to spend winter (while the ground isn't frozen) cleaning them out for spring, as well as preparing the rest of the garden for potentially heavy snow. [more inside]
Help me find a Christmas present for girlfriend. [more inside]
My apartment doesn't have central heating, and space heaters aren't doing the job. It never gets below freezing here, but does get pretty chilly (maybe 40ish at the lowest) after dark. I have a couple of space heaters, but they don't really heat the full space (two rooms, about 300 sq. feet each), and so I'm left with just sitting right in front of the heater, so there's hot air blowing right on me, which is uncomfortable and dries out my skin like crazy. A friend recommended a radiant or oil heater, but didn't know a lot of specifics. Has anyone used these? Are they better than the type of space heater that just blows out hot air? And, do you have any recommendations for specific brands?
I have been running 3 to 4 miles every other day since about June of this year. It has become a very important part of maintaining my mental health, and now that winter has arrived it has been nearly impossible to run. What do I do now to stay active and sane? [more inside]

I'm driving from DC to Washington State in a few weeks, and will take the northern route (OH, IL, IA, SD, MT, ID, WA). I'm concerned about wintry weather, and want to take precautions for a safe drive. What are some best steps or considerations to get there safely? What worked well for you in similar circumstances? Winter coat filter: Hello minds of mefi, I am looking for an uber warm women's parka. Complexity level: I am six feet tall and size 4. Brands like North Face are great, but the sleeves are too short and waist is too wide. So I am looking for quality brads that I could look into that would fit a tall, slim woman. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
First Chicago winter for a California native. Need recommendations for stores that have good-quality but not-too-expensive winter coats. [more inside]
I like M&S-style clothing, but as a slender man (35 chest 31 waist) I often have trouble finding something that fits, and the M&S range of winter coats, even in 'Small', looks a little baggy on me. Where else in London could I find something reasonably stylish, but also warm, to wear over a shirt & sweater, for less than, say, £300? [more inside]
I've spent my entire life (with little exception) between Houston and Atlanta, latitudinally speaking, and moved to Seattle this summer. I don't really know what I'm supposed to be wearing to best handle the winter. [more inside]

We have a large (~500 sq ft) family room which is not connected to our central heat. We'd like to use a space heater (maybe 2 *) to heat it in the winter. What's the difference between the cheap little ones and the more expensive ones? [more inside]
Asking for my sister, mother of a 1.5 year old boy: "Please share your opinions about winter outerwear for a toddler. He already has a good winter coat (thank you friends from Canada), but what about the rest of it? Gloves v. mittens? Bibs v. snow pants? What's worth a significant investment, and where can you save some pennies? Your advice and recommendations, please." Additional relevant info: he is rather tall for his age, and this winter he wears a 3T. He lives in New England, so winter is for real.
We're in Toronto. Our friends are in Chicago. We'd like to meet up roughly halfway between our cities over the Christmas break (i.e. in Michigan or Ontario), and rent a house or cottage somewhere quiet with some natural scenery. Any recommendations? [more inside]
Trees in deep snow often have a gap around them where the snow is lower (see here and here). Why is this? Do trees give off enough warmth to melt snow, or do they absorb the snow as water, or is it because falling/blowing snow is blocked by the tree trunk, leaving a kind of shadow?
I live in Michigan, where ave winter temps range from 20 to 40F with wind chill or actually temps often ducking below 0 in the deep of winter. During the coldest months, I typically wear a base layer under my clothes -- not just when doing outdoor activities, but every day, i.e., in office, at home, running errands, etc. I thought this was common practice as well as common sense. One day last winter I had a doctor's appt., and when I rolled up my sleeve the physician's assistant mentioned that she thought it was really "neat" that I had thought to wear a "second" shirt. I related the story to my coworkers who then acted like I had grown a third head. [more inside]
I just had a bit of a "due to winter dryness" nosebleed. (In my boss's office during a meeting so at least tissues were there and she's a mom of two boys, so this did not phase her.) It went on for a bit (maybe took like 10 min to clear up completely) but seems ok now. My question is: I normally go to the gym Tues and Thurs for at least 30 min. I don't want to end up passed out on the gym floor with blood running out of my face if I can help it. [more inside]
Winter is around the corner and I’m direly in need of a new pair of boots. In the past few years, I’ve bought a few different styles but never “invested” (all under <$200) and I have destroyed every pair. How do I find a good quality boot (with the necessary snowflakes)? [more inside]

Hi Metafilter! Can you help me find winter-lined leather gloves made in a developed country (the U.S., the UK, the EU, etc.)? I want them in black, in a women's size 7.5. I want to buy them online, but not from Leather Gloves Online.
Can I raise my internal temperature/reduce my sensitivity to cold? I've always lived in cold regions (midwest, new england) but I've equally always been the one whining when it's 50 degrees out. Literally, it is 50 right now and I just got out of bed and put a big fluffy bathrobe over my long pjs and was still cold. I know all the obvs things to do to get warmer in the moment (bath, hot coffee, layers, long underwear, etc) but is there any way I can stop being so sensitive to it in the first place?
I'm heading to Europe in the thick of winter mostly as part of field work for a research degree. Amsterdam, Berlin are definite destinations. All advice I have is that winter in Northern Europe sucks hard and isn't a great time to be going. Can someone please explain why that's so apart from the cold? Can someone else explain why that's completely wrong? How could I get the most out of the experience? [more inside]

I’m currently expecting my first child, who is due around Halloween. I have some minor and probably totally inconsequential—yet nagging—worries about her expected birthdate, and would love if those of you who are late fall babies OR a parent of a late fall baby would come in and assuage my concerns. Children's book, of a wintery sort (I've been trying to remember the title for six months). I read it in the last 15 years. It involved a bored princess and someone that came and shook everything up - perhaps pied piper-ish? It involved juggling I think and the character's name was really important - I remember it as something like 'Hode'.
I currently live in the Southern US, but next month I'm making a trip to Southern Argentina and next year I'm moving to New York. I guess it's time to buy warm clothes! Can you give me some recommendations on warm, light, layerable winter clothes, particularly a coat? [more inside]
I read this a LONG time ago, a jacket where you could snap ur wrist (or some other hand geuster/movement) and it cause ur phone (stored in the sleeve) to drop right into ur hand. It was awesome if slightly risky and I'd like to take a look at it again. Anyone know of it? Or something similar?

I live near a medium-sized nature preserve, it has been a long hard winter with no end in sight. I suspect he's venturing further to find food, it's probably a really lean time. Help me help him. [more inside]

We are looking for a way to get out of the cold for at least two months during the northeast winter and have been trying to figure out if its possible to rent a small ( one bedroom) place in the coast of Florida. But not near the hustle and bustle of Miami or Boca. We are looking for a laid back sleepy and affordable spot to be and stay warm during Feb/March, any ideas?
In Montreal for vacation. Saw man on subway wearing an awesome winter coat. He had a shaved head, and his coat looked a bit monastic. It was long (down below his knee) and a bit baggy at the bottom, very warm looking, almost as if he were wearing an old-fashioned sleeping bag. Also distinctive, it had a very high collar, almost to the top of his ears, all around. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Mad science/weather physicsfilter: I live in a small town in the Midwest right at the moment. It gets very, very cold, and most of the actual suffering part of the cold is due to high winter winds. Why can't towns like this just build city walls, ancient Athens-style, say 20 feet high or so (more?) to keep the wind out? There must be some obvious physics/ecology reason why this wouldn't work, someone explain it to me?
Can you wear a scarf with a hooded jacket or sweatshirt without looking like a jerk?
