Seeking a winter get aways with kids in New England

The alms family (2 adults + 8 y.o. + 4 y.o.) is looking to spend 2-3 days in a rural setting over the winter break, with activities like sleigh rides, bonfires, snow shoeing, nature walks, board games, tubing, possibly xc skiing, and other kids activities. We don't downhill ski or snowboard ourselves although we’d consider a ski resort if it has enough of the other things going on. We think a full service inn catering to families is probably the best bet but maybe there is a farm-inn stay, ski resort or rental that would work. [more inside]

Snow and my garden

device for remotely turning on roof cables for ice dams

I have roof cables installed on my roof to help with our awful ice dams. Problem is, it is very expensive just to leave them running all the time when I am at work. But if I turn them off and a snowstorm starts while I am at work, then the ice dams form before I get home. Can anyone suggest some kind of a remote activation device. Ideally something that would let me turn on the cables from my phone or from the web. The system is already installed on the roof, so all I need is some kind of system to turn it on and off. Please do not suggest modifications to the roof - we have been through every type of soffit, sheathing, roofing solution over a period of 20 years - these ice dams are just an insoluble problem and the only way to control them is with the cables. So I am only looking for replies that can suggest ways to turn the cables on and off remotely. Thanks!

Truck + plow blade. Snow-covered driveway ending in garage. Can it work?

Dumb question: can a pick-up truck with a plow blade clear a short straight driveway that goes from the street right up to a garage? By design, the plow is intended push snow in front of it—so won't the result be a pile of snow against the garage door? Or can the blade be raised high enough so that the driver can move it over a mound of snow, lower the blade, and drive backward to pull the snow away? [more inside]

Trees and snow

Trees in deep snow often have a gap around them where the snow is lower (see here and here). Why is this? Do trees give off enough warmth to melt snow, or do they absorb the snow as water, or is it because falling/blowing snow is blocked by the tree trunk, leaving a kind of shadow?

Looking for a film with people frozen in a car

I saw this film on television in the 70s when I was young; it was broadcast sometime before 1979. Some people are stranded after a snow storm. At one point they discover a car in the snow, and when they look inside the car they see the people in it were frozen to death. I think someone cried out, "Oh, no, it's the professor!" (or something like that). At another point in the film they come across a cabin in the woods and try to open a can of something they find, but they have no can opener. The film was in color, so please don't suggest something in black & white. It may have been made for TV or it may have been an actual film; I remember there being a lot of commercials for it because we had just had the great "Blizzard of 1978" in Boston. Any help finding this film would be great! One person suggested to me it might be "The Untamed" directed by Archainbaud, but it is not that. PLEASE HELP!
