It is possible to clone a hard drive from a failing computer, put that disk image on a drive in a NEW computer, and expect the installed software to just work? [more inside]
I work for a nonprofit and we have several computers used by our students. They run Windows XP and I know that their decline and fall is probably inevitable. There is a specific old version of a program that we use which is not compatible with newer versions of Windows. Help me make a plan: I need to find a new literacy program that suits our needs, find a way to make this 10+ year old program compatible with newer computers, or at the very least keep these computers semi-functional as long as possible. For the past few weeks, I can only use Facebook on a particular Firefox profile when using my laptop. Facebook does not load (stuck on loading screen) on my other Firefox profiles even if I create a new profile, as well as in Chrome and IE. Sometimes, when I access Facebook, it takes a long time trying to load but displays only a severely broken snippet. All other Web sites load properly. Does any of you have suggestions on how I can fix this problem? [more inside]

I thought it was just me the first time it happened, which was a day or so after the penultimate Windows Update for XP installed. My computer went into an endless reboot cycle. It would not boot to Safe Mode, so I could not roll back the registry to a previous state. After a lot of anguish, I was able to get it to boot in Mini PE using a CD I was given. Even that took several tries. In Mini PE, I could roll back the registry, and everything worked fine. Then, it happened again today. The final Windows Update for XP installed a couple of days ago. I fixed it as before, and searched. I found this. It's not just me. [more inside]
I run some really old voice recognition software that will not run on newer versions of Windows, and have resisted upgrading all this time because the newer versions don't work as well for my various disabilities. Is there anything I should be doing now to prepare for Windows XP end of life? Unlike previous questions here on the green, I want to continue connecting to the Internet.
I have an old laptop running XP. The laptop actually dates from the Vista era, but I chose to have XP installed given the lousy rep that Vista had. I have seen this question. I have a newer laptop that I use for most of my word processing and internetting needs. I can retire the old laptop, but it still works so I'd rather not ditch it. Assuming I am not going to attempt to run XP on anything connected to the outside world, what can I do with this old laptop? [more inside]

How to connect a Mac OS X and a Windows XP machine, in order to have a PHP+MysqL application running on Windows but with browser and usage from Mac OS X?
I want to connect from a Mac OS X machine to a Windows XP running XAMPP (Apache, MySQL, PHP), in order to use an application running on the Windows machine. At the same time, I want to have the Mac OS X allowing Internet browsing, while Windows should be isolated from the Internet. Can it be done in some way, or can you suggest a possible setup close to that purpose? [more inside]
Colleague's Windows laptop isn't starting up properly. Would it be possible to boot this laptop as an external hard drive to another computer, a la Apple's Target Disk Mode, perhaps using an Ethernet cable? We have both Windows machines and Macs in the office. Please note that I am exclusively looking for this sort of solution, within the confines of this particular question.

For the past month or so, my Windows XP SP3 gives me the message "The current user account is not recognised. Restart the computer and then open User Accounts." whenever I try to open User Accounts. I need Windows XP on my boot camp capable Macbook Pro. I purchased the home edition SP2 a long time ago, but have now lost the product key / activation. I'm looking for legal ways to install XP tonight or tomorrow. [more inside]
My installation of Windows XP Pro (SP3) seems to have developed intermittent amnesia. I've noticed a couple of times in the past week that files which I edited and saved under new names just -- disappeared. (Details inside). Today, after restarting the machine, I found my desktop wallpaper and Quick Launch icons had reverted to what I had several months ago, and my Recent Documents lists in MS and Adobe products was showing material from July 2011 and earlier. Plus, my iTunes library had suddenly been unable to find about 10% of my songs, although I have been able to manually locate them and make iTunes recognize a few again. These "missing" songs are both old and new: I don't see any pattern in time re what has gone missing. I'm assuming the worst -- XP death throes in progress! -- and am updating my data backups NOW. All my applications seem fine so far: I'm not missing anything that was recently installed. No other data seems to be actually missing. While I back up, is there anything else I should investigate or hypothesize? [more inside]

I have a small simple 16 bit windows application that I need access to from a couple dozen Windows 7 64 bit computers. Unfortunately we lost some of the source code so recompiling it is not in the cards any time soon. Is there a way I can host this app on something like Amazon AWS and give all these users access to run the app via a browser or some other method? Installing VM lite or the windows virtual pc is not an option unfortunately. These users would need access to this program concurrently. The VMWare solutions are far too expensive and the VMLite product that might help we won't be out for some time. Thank you for reading my post. Have a great one.
XP. Trying to get backed up files off old desktop computer. Using windows explorer, I cannot 'see' a partition on secondary hard drive, like the partition is hidden. But I *can* see the files when I search for *.mp3 or *.jpg or *.txt over the whole machine; they can be seen, through search facility, read only, in a partition that doesn't even show up in win explorer. I'm not certain if I somehow hid that partition and if I did I've no idea how I did it. I want to get these files off that desktop and to a place I can access them anywhere anytime, but right now I can't access them at all. Any help you can provide greatly appreciated. [more inside]

My parents computer isn't booting, and it's due to a corrupt ntfs filesystem. I'd like to run CHKDSK, but when I try to boot into the repair console, it requires an administrator password, which we don't have (second-hand computer). I can't use a password reset disk, because it won't recognize the disk (presumably due to the corrupt filesystem). Catch-22 - what now? [more inside]

My brother-in-law's windows XP machine has died, with a STOP error of 7e (ooooo5).. Sometimes it also references aspi.sys. Sometimes it makes it to the 'windows' screen, then hangs there loading endlessly. I suspected a rootkit because of a virus warning before it crashed, but I downloaded a couple of Linux rescue CDs and they didn't work - spitting out a variety of error messages (couldn't mount fs, init cancelled, or just a stream of hex numbers). I've also tried safe mode with and without console - it just resets without comment. The computer is very dusty, so my next step is to open it up and reseat the components after giving them a bit of compressed air - any thoughts on other stuff I could try, or components that might be at fault? I guess the motherboard is the obvious place for a problem - plausible?
