Why has my Firefox slowed down?

Why has my Firefox slowed down? It started a few day ago. Sometimes it takes several minutes for a page to load. Some only partially load, then stop. Some don't load at all. Not every page is this way, but I'd say about 20% suffer from one of these problems. IE is zipping right along though. I did a virus check, ran Spy-bot and Ad-Aware and cleaned up my registry. Yet the problem persists. Oh, I'm running 1.0 and XP Pro.

Linux Distributions

Hope I'm not opening a can of worms here. I'm jumping into the Linux ring for the very first time. There are a ton of distributions and I was wondering if there were any that the community would recommend for a noob like myself. So far, I've downloaded Mandrake and RedHat images but there are a ton of other out there and I wonder if I'm missing something better? I'll be dual booting on a WinXP pro box (Intel) so I'm looking for something that is relatively easy to install in this situation.

What's the easiest way to synchronize text files between two computers?

I maintain lists of to-dos and other information in a lot of text files. Currently I've been having to shuttle them between work and home via my FTP server, which is about a five step process and rather annoying, espcially when Dreamhost is slow. What is an easier way to synchronize text files between two Windows XP machines that are NOT on the same LAN... with a big emphasis on EASY, preferably two steps or less?

Windows XP crashing

Win XP Problem: Windows Explorer (and My Computer) keep crashing. If I bring either up, it crashes immediately (the computer doesn't crash). Around the same time, I noticed I'd acquired some spyware. So I ran Ad-aware, and it seemed to get rid of the bad stuff. But Explorer still crashes. I ran Norton Anti-Virus, which claimed it found viruses but couldn't fix them because I needed to adjust the properties of some of the Norton files. But I can't adjust these properties, because I can't get to the files (because Explorer crashes). Help.

I have a keyboard question. Is there a way in WinXP to change the definition of individual keys? My new computer has a keyboard layout that is subtly different from the old one which results in a smaller space bar and as a result I regularly hit the Alt key by mistake which pops up a menu and often leads to loss of text I've typed. How to change my parents' computer-destroying habits

Okay, I have parents that aren't the most tech-savvy people in the world. And that's okay.

The problem is that every three to four weeks, like clockwork, they will completely destroy Windows. The first time, it was very interesting and peculiar, because my Mother with no technically experience, managed to cause Windows XP SP2 to hickup into an NT boot screen and continously restart. Now, this is about the sixth time and I'm a little concerned.

I can't be there to watch them twenty-four seven, and they always call after something terrible has happened. Now they have some worm on their computer which has disabled Norton Antivirus, disallowed access to the Add/Remove Programs, disallowed access to the Administrator Tools, doesn't appear as any thread or process and closes Internet Explorer only when they try and visit Yahoo! In the past, after previous system wipes, I've tried installing FireFox, AdAware, and other utilities to help them, but then they destroy Windows or corrupt the file-allocation table.

What can be done to change my parents behavior or habits when on the computer or browsing the web so they can better understand how not to maim/corrupt/destroy/accost their computer?

SMTP and Outlook 97

I have a machine running Outlook 97. Somehow, the SMTP server has become changed to 'net' (that's all it says - it should be nameofdomain.com). I am unable to change this back - every time I try, the next time Outlook goes to send and receive, it attempts to locate 'net' again. Any idea what's going on here? Google is little help on such generic keywords and the MS knowledge base doesn't seem able to help. Spyware check reveals nothing. XP Home.

Windows 2000 hard disk management

Hard disk management. I have several hard drives, running from 20GB to 120GB. My primary C: drive is on the 20GB drive, and the other day I noticed it was taking quite a while to do things, the C: drive was down to about 20MB of disk space! What I'm looking for is a disk manager that would look at hard drive and tell me what folders are taking up what space on the hard drive, so I could prune the offending directories. I'm on Windows 2000, and would prefer freeware.

XP update problem

WinXP: my laptop downloaded a windows update (not sure what sort). Now, when I shut down, it tries to update my machine. I get a message saying that Windows is updating, and it advises me NOT to turn off my machine until it's done. But it continues to "update" forever. I've let it sit for two hours, and it still claims to be updating. Finally, with clenched teeth, I shut off the machine and rebooted. Everything seems okay. Now, whenever I shut down, it asks me if I want to install the upgrade or not. If I say yes, the machine stalls on that upgrading message. If I say no, it shuts down fine. I'm ok with saying no all the time, except that now I can't ever add any new updates. What should I do?
