The 6th grader has to have a new computer. (We homeschool and half of the kiddo's classes are online.) I was very happy with the Dell that had Windows 7 (stolen out of the car this morning.) Problem: I am the IT department. I fear the windows 8 learning curve. Do I get the windows 7 laptop (super-easy for me) or do I get the 8 and the touchscreen because that's the newest tech? On my Win 8 Pro box, I had just one user: sandettie. That was in the Administrators group, of course. I made a new user, sandettieadmin, to split off admin privs to that user. I then took sandettie OUT of the admin group.
I logged out, and now it only shows sandettieadmin as an available user.
Problem: I immediately forgot the password for sandettieadmin.
There is no <-- arrow next to the sandettieadmin user in the login screen. How do I force windows to let me log on as the other user?

I bought a 2012 Imac without an optical disc drive. I researched difficulties others have had with this process and windows 7, like the thread here
. After a week of trying I'm no closer than I was when I started. I have a copy of Windows 8 system builder that I want to install.
The problems I face are these.
*Microsoft only allows upgrades of Windows 8 to be downloaded. Stand alone copies are only available on a disc. Apple says Bootcamp does not work with the upgrade
* it seems impossible to get an actual legal copy of the windows 8 iso. Digital River has only Windows 7 iso's.
* I purchased an ASUS optical drive from Amazon that came without cables but the sata cables linked with this device do not fit with the back of the iMac.I am probably sending the drive back to Amazon, but am not sure where I go from there.

I have a new Samsung Ultrabook running Windows 8, and a Canon Pixma iP4600 inkjet printer. The interwebz tell me that I should just be able to connect the two, and print away. I can't. Now what?? [more inside]

Why isn't Team Fortress 2 starting? For the past day or two, whenever I try to open up TF2 on my Windows 8 computer, I get a message that simply says "failed to start game (unknown error)". This seems to be a somewhat common problem
but I can't find any answers for why this is happening or how to fix it.
So far I have tried re-installing TF2, deleting the "appcache" folder, and verifying the game cache in Steam. Other than that, I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions?

A week ago a well intentioned doofus dropped my Asus N53S, Win7x64 Pro. She was a champ. Snapped the motherboard, but I safely extracted the harddrive. The venue of its demise bought me a Asus N76VX which has the dreadful Win 8, but 2 TB harddrive with lots of partition space. Is there any way I can "run" my old machine from its harddrive in an emulated Win 7 environment on this new beast? [more inside]

We've got an HP ElitePad running Windows 8, and would like to use it to help new employees at our deli make sammiches the right way. We've setup a sharepoint site for the deli and created pages for all the menu items, but now we'd like to try to keep the device focused on it's task. Is there a way to lock down the tablet to just the browser, and limit the pages employees can access?

I have a Skype interview tomorrow. In logging on to Skype to test it out, I was asked by my new Windows 8 laptop to merge the Microsoft and Skype accounts. Does my account name change now? I need to know what to tell the interviewers who are asking me, now, to email it to them! Plus I have some other questions about Skype as run through a Windows 8 app. [more inside]

I've been the all-around IT guy for a small office of 30 for a few years now. We've been primarily a Mac shop this whole time, but new business requirements mean that we'll probably be buying more windows machines going forward. I've been tasked with a pilot program to migrate 1/3 of our office over this year, with the assumption we'll bring everyone else over next year. Details inside: [more inside]

My Thinkpad X61 tablet is dying. Work will replace it, I just need to tell them what fancy new machine I want. But I don't have much time - the new machine needs to be ordered and delivered
by March 31! Which doesn't give me enough time to research my options. Thus I turn to you for help. [more inside]

I'm trying to remote control a Windows 8 PC with LogMeIn. The end user is not there and would not understand anything I told them to do anyway. I can connect, but I can only see the upper left corner of the screen. The PC is set at some large resolution (for her poor eyesight) but I cannot change this since I cannot see the entire dialog box for the graphics properties. I cannot scroll around. I cannot zoom in or out. I need to be able to view the whole screen. [more inside]

I currently don't have any version of Windows installed on my PC (it's a Mac). I would like to install Windows on a Bootcamp partition. I noticed that Microsoft has a special offer
where they are selling a Windows 8 download for $40 through Jan. 31. That's a good price for me. The possible catch: Microsoft seems to be saying that I need to have an earlier version of Windows installed in order to use that download. I can't quite tell whether they are serious about this.
Do I really need to have a preexisting Windows install to take advantage of the $40 Windows 8 offer? [more inside]
