Does this tech wizard exist in SF?

All of my laptops inevitably, inexorably slow down noticeably, way before they should. I know this happens with all computers. I am reasonably tech-savvy. But my current ThinkPad slowed down in the first three months. I want someone to take my laptop, figure out what's making it slow (software and/or hardware), and fix it all. I just want my computer to not be slow. Does such a person exist in SF? Who are they, where can I find them, and how much do they charge?

Syncing files on a remote web server with Windows 7

I have an interesting file syncing problem. As part of my responsibilities, I have to keep track of changes in the US export regulations. The Dept. of Commerce makes the regulations available in two formats, HTML and PDF. The HTML versions are oddly formatted so I prefer the PDF versions even if they are harder to search. They're available in PDF on this page. I have been regularly going out to the page and downloading relevant documents that have changed but I'd like to automate this if I can. But there are some gotchas. [more inside]

Ah Windows!

The Windows laptop that I have been using for work has slowly been dying 1000 little deaths. They seemed to be all software related, So I decided to do a clean install. The install, from a USB, failed before it even got started. There was a missing DVD driver that could not be located anywhere. I canceled out of the install and try to boot up normally, But that won't work either. I have an error in my BCD file. [more inside]

Win7 Devices and Printers hangs up

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 32-bit on it and I'm having the weirdest issue with it. The "Devices and Printers" control panel window hangs every time I open it. It gets to about 90% of the way, according to the progress bar, and then stops. I can manage my printers using the Admin tools but everything else is unreachable. Is there any way to fix this short of a Windows re-install? This is a work laptop and I'd rather not have to go through our IT service department since they'll nuke everything on it that wasn't there when I got it.

Win 7/ Thinkpad X1 Unexpected Shutdown

Win7/ Thinkpad X1 problem driving me crazy - at some random time in sleep mode, my Thinkpad will reboot and give a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" message when it's back up. Win7 home-built HTPC shuts down without an error message, why?

My home-made HTPC running Windows 7 shuts down without warning, first after prolonged use playing HD (720) videos with VLC. Then it stopped twenty minutes into an episode, and switching to Media Player Classic seemed to be the answer. Then the computer shut down after about 20 minutes of simply being idle. And there's never a "sudden shutdown" error message when I reboot. How do I diagnose this, or what could be wrong? [more inside]

Computing makes sense to me, until they do something completely stupid (or too fucking clever)

Dinovo Edge keyboard works fine in OS (Win7 x64 RC1 7100), certain keystrokes in Metafilter turn into extended keys (ie., é is (slash) `` (is shift comma), < (is backslash) ? (is shift-6). Why does external drive keep switching back to read-only setting?

I have an external usb drive running off my Windows 7 computer. It keeps switching back to Read-Only, so when I try to send files to it, it merely appends a file and adds a number to its name, instead of re-writing the entire file. I've tried to change it back, but it does not stay changed. The minute I refresh the page, the read-only status comes back! Is there some setting I'm missing? Is there something in Windows 7 that's causing this to happen?
