I'm considering doing a major computer upgrade - CPU, mainboard, and video card. Is Windows going to completely shit the bed after I do this? [more inside]
All of my laptops inevitably, inexorably slow down noticeably, way before they should. I know this happens with all computers. I am reasonably tech-savvy. But my current ThinkPad slowed down in the first three months. I want someone to take my laptop, figure out what's making it slow (software and/or hardware), and fix it all. I just want my computer to not be slow. Does such a person exist in SF? Who are they, where can I find them, and how much do they charge?
I'm having trouble connecting to the internet or to my cable modem. I just bought a used (Dell, 64-bit) laptop. I've been using a Motorola Surfboard SB1501U cable modem plugged in through ethernet on my old (Acer, 32-bit) laptop. I plugged it into the Dell and it immediately connected to the internet. There was a couple of other unrelated issues though, but there is no factory reset option and I thought I'd start with a clean slate. So, I made an installation disk and reinstalled the OS, W7 for a 64-bit computer. Everything went smoothly. But now I can't connect to the internet, either through the ethernet or the USB and installation disk. [more inside]
My dad passed away on Friday, and my mom is eager to get into his computer (Song Vaio running Windows 7) and Blackberry (Bold). Both are password protected. Is there any way to change the password on each without wiping the data? I'm fairly computer literate, and my father will have every software disk he's ever received. We also have access to his email if that helps with the Blackberry. Thanks.
What am I doing that makes my computer suddenly read all inputs as though the Shift key were pressed, and how do I make it stop? [more inside]
Computer froze up, only letting me access the recovery manager. Burned 6 recovery disks, then reset to original factory settings. Reinstalled the recovery disks, the program said it was successful, but the files are nowhere to be found. What next? [more inside]
It’s 2013 Mefi; how do you keep your computers in sync? [more inside]
My Windows 7 computer no longer turns off properly. If I shut the screen, it no longer sleeps or hibernates, it just freezes. If I go through the start menu to hibernate, it will do so, but the computer is still on -- the power and the wifi lights stay on, it's still running and using battery. This also happens if I go through the start menu to turn off the computer. If I hold on the power key, it will then turn off and restart or resume from hibernation normally when I turn it back on. How can I set up a Windows 7 PC to be clean and stay clean? I don't want file bits and temporary files to clog it up, I don't want a million image files the size of a dot. I don't want this computer to run like molasses after a few years of web browsing and use. What is the best way to do that? [more inside]
Recently, my computer has decided to be very particular about what it will allow to connect to the internet. Some programs, like uTorrent and Filezilla, can connect fine and have no problems. But things like self-updaters and Flash-based uploading cannot connect. The same thing happens on two different internet connections on two different wireless networks whose configurations have not been changed since before this started (I do not have a wired network to test). I have not made any significant changes to my computer since before this started. I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. What could be causing the problem? How can I fix it? What caused the problem in the first place? [more inside]
Is my 3+ year old HP Desktop worth fixing? I think it needs a new hard drive, and I plan on replacing OS. Power Supply was replaced 2 years ago, Motherboard replaced 1 year ago, both on extended warranty. [more inside]
I have a piece of software that works on Windows 7, 32-bit, but not on x64 versions. Is it possible to get it working on my computer, perhaps in a VM? I also have the linux version of the software. [more inside]
What could possibly be going on with my new (to me) Windows 7 desktop? Windows seemingly installs fine, then eventually (most recently after the first reboot), it hangs at a black screen. More details inside... [more inside]

I am trying to get the Adobe CS3 design premium suite working on my Windows 7, 64-bit gaming computer, which meets and exceed CS3's minimum specs. The install went fine, and I know the disks are good as they worked on my old (dead) XP computer. Most of the programs (Bridge, Flash, etc.) will open a process, but not actually open anything on the screen. Photoshop will open, but all that appears is the gray background, and the menu bar. It hangs immediately. It won't even open the Photoshop "loading..." splash/credits screen. How can I get these programs running? (Yes, I tried googling it, and no, it isn't a TWAIN issue).

OK, I've almost given up. I try to connect my HP G60 laptop (Windows 7) to my Olevia (I know) HDTV and the TV screen wants to be magenta (pink!). Not totally pink, just the colored bits. The white parts stay white. I'm using a 6-foot HDMI cable. I have had a proper picture in the past, but I cannot for the life of me figure out a stable combination of settings. Anybody else experience that? Any solution to the pinkness?
I'm thinking about replacing my 2 year-old 15" Macbook Pro but I can't find a non-Apple laptop that feels like it doesn't have cheap hardware. Am I missing something? [more inside]
