I have about 500GB of files (mostly photos and music) on my iMac that I want to move to a Windows laptop. I need to use an external drive to copy them. Can I copy the Mac files onto my external drive via my iMac's bootcamp Windows partition to avoid file-type compatibility problems? [more inside]

I'm trying to upload a word document with significant text formatting to a website that will only accept .doc and .docx. The problem is, I'm on a Mac and I know from experience that my formatting is likely to get horribly messed up if viewed in Windows. Is there some way to check how my document will look on a Windows machine without actually having access to Microsoft Word on a Windows machine?
I am hoping to be able to install Windows 8 on my Mac so that I can do a few work demos; I will be using Windows with only MS Office installed, and using it perhaps once a week at most. [more inside]
I use Macs. I use a flash drive to carry powerpoint presentations and other documents that I need to access on PC's running various flavours of Windows, which are not mine and I will not have administrator access to. Is there a way that I can protect/encrypt the drive in a way that will let me use it on both systems, without having to pre-install software on the Windows system? I do not need government-grade encryption, just something that will stop casual snoopers accessing the data if I lose the drive.
I'm very spoiled by the dock on my Mac, and am hoping for a program that provides the same functionality on my Windows 7 machine. [more inside]

This might sound like a strange question, but I have two computers, a Macbook and PC. If it matters, the Windows PC is online; the Macbook is almost never online. (This is why I'm not using a cloud service.) I'd like both of them to be hooked up to the same external drive (or some kind of backup drive), so I can pass files between the two, WITHOUT using the wireless network. I'm assuming I need to use hard cables for both, which is fine. [more inside]

My old MacBook just died, so I need a new computer. I'm broke, so I'm considering going back to Windows. I haven't used Windows since the XP days, and vaguely remember hating it, though I can't remember exactly why. What's Windows like these days compared to Mac OS in terms of ease of use or annoyingness? What are your favorite / least favorite features of one platform compared to the others? And if I do get a Windows machine, what models might I consider? Requirements are pretty simple: it should know how to surf the web, run Word and LaTeX, and play movies, and most importantly be cheap, reliable and long-lasting.
Is there any way to recoup the money I spent on Adobe products for Windows, now that I've switched to Mac? [more inside]

I'm a late adaptor. After much happy gaming in Windows XP (via Boot Camp on my Mac), I am finally getting around to Vista-only games like Assassin's Creed III. So it's time to take the plunge and buy a copy of Vista on eBay. But which version? 64-bit or 32-bit? Service pack 1, 2, or 3? Starter, basic, or ultimate? Home or business? As somebody who isn't well-versed in Windows to begin with, I'm finding the choice a little overwhelming. I will be using Windows exclusively for gaming and don't care about any other features. Also, note that Windows Vista is the latest Windows my 2006 Mac Pro will support, so unfortunately "Skip straight to Windows 7 or 8" isn't an option. [more inside]

I currently don't have any version of Windows installed on my PC (it's a Mac). I would like to install Windows on a Bootcamp partition. I noticed that Microsoft has a special offer where they are selling a Windows 8 download for $40 through Jan. 31. That's a good price for me. The possible catch: Microsoft seems to be saying that I need to have an earlier version of Windows installed in order to use that download. I can't quite tell whether they are serious about this. Do I really need to have a preexisting Windows install to take advantage of the $40 Windows 8 offer? [more inside]

The Windows Live Family Safety content filter has a neat optional feature: instead of completely blocking a web page that might be inappropriate, it can display a warning that the user can then click through to visit the site if they really need to, and then a notification is sent to the parent or admin that they clicked through the warning to get to the site. Is there a similar system available for Mac OS? [more inside]
