I help this sweet old lady with computer stuff. She's running Windows 7 and uses an SBC account "powered by Yahoo!" (terribly out-of-date interface). She often receives emails with family photos from her daughter-in-law's iPhone. She CAN download them, and I'm teaching her how to wade through the attachment-folders that seems to create (for virus-scanning I presume) and then copy them over to her Pictures folder, where she can organize them. However, they are often rotated incorrectly because of some iPhone - Windows issue, and they are often checked "Read-Only"...

Whoa. An empty slate.
But I reboot and my old profile is suddenly back up and running. So, what just happened there? What can I do to make sure this doesn't happen again? Several related questions inside.

When I go to the NBC Olympics site to log in with my cable package details, the iframe that should show the log in fields (username and password) does not load. This is on a win7 machine with both chrome and FF. The problem does not occur on a different computer on the same network (a macbook running 10.6.8). What setting on my computer seems to be blocking this, and how can I get this frame to load?

My company is upgrading a few student labs from XP to 7. We do not want to manually activate each machine after deploying our image, nor do we want to run a licensing server, as our network for the labs is very small. We are using HP machines that came with professional edition pre-installed, so we can legally deploy a new Windows image on the machines.
Anybody know how to manage licenses in a more elegant manner when deploying Windows 7?

I need to remove various 0 byte "ghost files" from the desktops of a bunch of Windows 7 computers. I know DelinvFile works but is there a free alternative which actually works? I know it can also be done by turning off explorer.exe and going into cmd to delete them but what exactly are the steps for doing this? Any suggestions gratefully received.

I'm on a company provided Windows 7 laptop. Here's what I know:
When using the "Windows Classic" Theme (right click on desktop>personalize>select "Windows Classic" theme), Windows Explorer does NOT hang/hourglass for ~30 seconds when accessing files/navigating folders. All clicks to save files, navigate through local and distributed files (our MyDocs folder is stored on the Company's distributed file system), etc., are immediately responsive.
When using ANY other theme, clicking on navigation of files (local and DFS, even when not connected to the company network) hangs for 10-30 seconds.
What gives? Do all of the themes (minus the "Classic" theme) have some sort of "network call" that look through My Docs (which is technically on the DFS/my company's servers, that has a 30 timeout if the network doesn't respond?)
Any ideas how to fix this (change a registry setting, ask the company IT team to make a change to a group policy setting, etc.)? What's so special about the "Windows Classic" theme? It's ugly, but it saves me 30 seconds every time I touch a file, open windows explorer, etc.
Thanks in advance!

I purchased Windows 7 at a discounted rate through my school. I didn't realize this at the time, but because I got the 32-bit version I am not getting full usage of all my RAM (8 GB). It says that I only have 3.75 GB "usable". Obviously, I would like to get the most out of my CPU performance. What is the best/easiest/cheapest way to upgrade from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 7? I already tried the Windows "Anytime Upgrade" and it will not let you switch between the two. Also, will I have to backup before I make the switch or will it keep all of my data? Thank you for your time.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6700 (dv6780se) laptop which i recently upgraded to Windows 7 pro via a free copy from the msdn alliance. I am currently running 3 gigs of physical RAM in 2 slots. I recently read an article suggesting a change to the virtual memory paging file size. From what i gathered you should or can increase the size by multiplying the current amount times 1.5.
This would change my total virtual memory to 4605, is this wise?
Should i leave it on the save hard drive has my OS or move it to a partition or separate external hard drive?
I've also read that readyboost can increase performance... is this still quite debatable for Windows 7 and am I already pushing the limits of my RAM and virtual memory?

I'm currently running Windows 7 x86 fine and everything runs great. I did however run a routine pc audit with
Belarc Advisor and noticed my PC was "64-bit ready". Here are the details of my dv6700 (dv6780se as stated on the bottom sticker)
--1.67 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo--
--64 kilobyte primary memory cache--
--2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache--
--3072 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory--
System info does state I'm running a 32-bit OS. I have access to a win 7 x64 and would assume a performance increase.
Also HP dropped all support of windows 7 drivers on older machines.

I'm an advanced computer user and would like to know how Windows 7 compares with XP Pro. I'm clinging to the latter like Dagon to an emaciated villager but I know the time will come when I'll have to move on.
Basic info about install size, resource hogging, software compatibility (particularly MS Office versions) and tweakability in terms of Windows' always annoying "security" functions will be greatly appreciated. I have tried Vista, only to run away from it screaming. I'll be sitting round the fire in the trashcan, looking forward to reading your thoughts.

My boyfriend just installed Win 7 on his Samsung laptop which came with Vista originally. It had been buggy since day one with Vista, and many of those problems disappeared with W7.
However, one result was that the Fn+ keys all stopped working, so he can't adjust volume, brightness etc with the keyboard. I've searched for solutions but haven't found anything except
a passing mention on Yahoo!Answer that sounds grim.
He didn't wipe Vista before he installed, just ran the 7 disc setup from Vista, so is it possible to retrieve these batch files? Is there another way to recover Fn key functionality?
Thanks--

I did a clean reinstall of Windows 7. When I did, rather than creating a small "recovery" partition, it designated an entire separate hard drive a system drive. Now if I want to use the built in drive image program it insists I back up both...when I just want to back up the OS. Can this be changed? If not, if I use a third party image program can I just back up the C drive?
