I am currently in the Boston area experiencing snow mania 2015 where we have received an obscene amount of snow lately. I am a new homeowner and this is our first winter in the house so thank you in advance for your advice! There are a number of ice damns on my roof (likely because we have a cape-style house with poor ventilation). We're planning to have someone look into what we can do to improve ventilation/etc after the winter, but in the meantime do you have any advice on what to do about the ice damns? [more inside]
I live in a condo building on the National Register of Historic places with messed up windows. I'm trying to figure out what to do. [more inside]
Some friends recently had their deeply recessed basement windows replaced with glass block. So far, so good. The problem is that there is now a 3-5 inch gap between the end of the drywall of the recess and the glassblock, giving a not-so-lovely cross-sectional view of their exterior wall. (If I'm not explaining it well, here are pictures.) The question is: what is the best, least time-intensive way to bridge this gap? [more inside]
These are my windows. What should I do to keep me and my new kitten warmer during the winter? I need to be able to open the one by the fire escape in case of emergencies, but I'm fine not being able to open the other one until next spring. I'm renting so no permanent changes. Also, it's my only window so I want to be able to let in the tiny amount of light that gets in.
One of the power windows in my car has stopped rolling up. The windows are controlled by a dual switch in the center console. The driver's side works, and the passenger "down" works, but the passenger "up" switch does not. I tried replacing it with a new switch I ordered online, and was able to get the window 90% up, but then that new switch abruptly stopped working. Is this likely to be a case of a bad part, or is there something wrong with my electrical system? More details below. [more inside]
We have a nice home, but our house was built in 2007 with a number of "builder-grade" elements, including the windows. When we moved in, a few had issues with some elements of the windows (tracks sliding out, locking mechanisms not working smoothly), and they've only got worse. [more inside]
I just got a window AC for my stuffy studio that never gets any airflow. I live in a very old brick building and the wooden window frame is TORE UP...likely from previous window AC units. I could only get one of the three screws to tie into the lower sash that attaches to the top of the unit (it's the center screw, if that matters). How likely is it that it might dislodge itself and fall six storeys down? Is this something I should natter at my landlord about? [more inside]

I read this book of short stories years ago, and for some reason I remember most of the stories in it but have had no luck with Googling for it. Must be that the stories' premises were creative enough or caught my imagination in a particular way. The most memorable story was about trying to survive on Earth after a supernova. I'm pretty sure these are all from the same book: [more inside]
The window above my kitchen sink is large: 30 inches by 44 inches. The view is of my neighbor's yard, and if it's left uncovered they can look right into my house. When I moved into this house there were curtains hanging, but they get steamy and splattered from the sink. I tried some of this window film: http://www.artscape-inc.com/ but the steam and wetness makes it not stick very well. I tried regular frosted contact paper, same problem. Tried mini blinds, but the wetness makes condensation on them.I would love a stained glass window, but they are cost prohibitive in that large a size. Any ideas?
I spend a good deal of time video-conferencing via Skype. During summer afternoons, as the sun hits a certain point in the sky, there is strong sunlight glare from a nearby window that makes it almost impossible to work. I need screening, but cannot install permanent window treatment. I want a simple screen that I can prop in front of the window when needed. What materials or solutions will enable me to eliminate/minimize the strong glare? [more inside]

Something knocked a divot knocked out of our big (6' x 4') bay window has, and there are a couple cracks radiating out from the chipped place. I'm guessing this is something we want to hop on pretty quick so it doesn't get worse. What's the best answer? [more inside]

I'm pretty sure I came across this through the blue in the last few years: a story by an American author about a boy who becomes fascinated by a window he can see on the outside of his house (round? high?) that doesn't correspond with a window on the inside, and he cajoles his sister into touching it, and when she does she and the window don't vanish, they cease to have ever existed. What is it? [more inside]
I need to attach a window screen to my fire escape window. Obviously I'd like it to break away when necessary (and also so I can water my herbs strapped to the bars on the upper half of the window). How can I do this most effectively and with materials I already have? It needs to cover both the top and bottom half of the window, and there's no existing screen frame. [more inside]
So, I have a pane of glass in a wooden frame. If I call this wooden frame a door, the pane of glass is held in place with some pieces of wooden trim tacked down with some finishing nails. But, if I call this wooden frame a window, the pane of glass is held in place with glaziers points and putty. Why is this?
I love the NRK's Bergensbanen film - a contemplative, hours-long view of snowy Norwegian railway routes. It's perfect as a kind of gorgeous video wallpaper. I'm looking for something similar but from warmer climates - jungle, rainforest, etc. Not even trains, per se - it could just be stationary, HD tripod footage from the deep jungle. Most nature documentaries are too full of cuts and story: I just want something still and beautiful, but full of greenery and birds. Any ideas?
The other night I had a salesman come to my door from "The Window Store Home Improvements, Inc." He gave me a nice spiel about how they're looking for homes in my area that are willing to put advertising signs out front, and willing to be listed on their website, www.twshomesinc.com. In exchange they can give me new windows at wholesale cost instead of retail. The salesman also said that their windows are warranteed for 50 years, which he said was much more than typical warranties. [more inside]
I am looking for software which would allow me search my Windows 7 laptop for every photo and video I have. Browsing the search results I would like to be able to see both pictures and videos in thumbnail form. I would then like to be able to copy all unique files to a hard-drive. Once copied I would like to organise them into folders chronologically. [more inside]

My living room window 1" horizontal blinds have suddenly stopped closing fully when rotated upwards. Is there anything I can do to restore them to their previous non-problematic functionality? [more inside]
Last week I broke the sunroof to my car and significant amount of glass fell into the car. I've cleaned the big pieces out and vacuumed. I've also replaced the window. However, I'm worried about glass dust. [more inside]
I want to have a very lightweight camera that has no wires, but sends a video feed to an android device. I want to mount it on a telescoping pole for close-up inspection of stained glass windows. I do restoration and repair of stained glass for my living. So it would be great to be able to use a camera on a pole to do assessments onsite without ladders or scaffolding. [more inside]
My job requires me to use a program in apple. I need to visually compare drafts of some of the work, and because of the nature of the work the differences are often tiny. Mac's have in-application window switching (through the command key + (1-9)) that makes this very easy. Apparently soon we're switching to windows machines. Is there any way to replicate this on windows 7? [more inside]

Is there any way to make a web browser use two windows to show the first and second window-fulls of a single web page? This would be the equivalent of the "two up" view found in some PDF viewers. On the left, your normal view of a web page. On the right, the next part of that same page -- the thing you would see if you hit "page down" in the first window. [more inside]
