What's the state of the art in fun, inclusive party gaming?

What's the latest and greatest in party-style competitive or cooperative (ideally four player or even more) videogames? Our current selection is a little bit long in the tooth and I'm wondering if there's something I should be purchasing or downloading to freshen things up for this weekend. Attendees at our Game Nights run the gamut from very casual gamers to fairly hardcore. Simultaneous play and pass-the-controller style games are both fine, as long as they bring the fun for players as well as spectators. Past hits have included Rayman Raving Rabbids for the Wii, Castle Crashers for the Xbox, Pain for the PS3, and even Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat in a loose tourney-style play configuration. I remember getting some mileage out of Burnout Paradise, too. I'm not looking for online multiplayer, but rather local, single-system multiplayer. We have a Wii, an Xbox 360, and a PS3.

I'm pretty sure I got the idea for Castle Crashers from Metafilter, and I saw a fairly recent thread for Xbox 360 that suggested Scott Pilgrim and Guardian Heroes, so I'll check those out, too. Anything else? Any reason to blow the dust off the Wii? Thanks!

Seniors Console Games

Recommendations of recent console games for a library collection that would appeal to seniors. I am spending the last of my budget next week and I am looking for recommendations on recent (late 09, and 2010) console games that seniors might enjoy playing. My library is located near a new seniors home and centre that opened up earlier this year, plus we have a lot of seniors living close by and I would like to add some games that would appeal to them.

We have the usual suspects in our collection (Sports Resort, Lego, Boom Blox etc) so I am looking for some not so obvious titles or ones that slipped under the radar.

Best video game blogs?

What are the best video game blogs out there today? We've had a Wii for a while, so I'd been reading Joystiq's Nintendo subfeed. We just got a 360, so I'm switching to their whole feed, and also thinking about Kotaku. Outside of those two, what are the best news/review type gaming feeds to read?

Hello Cleveland! Are you ready to rock? And by rock, I mean click really loudly.

A couple of Guitar Hero: World Tour (Wii) instrument silencing questions. Now that I live in an apartment and my video gaming set-up shares a wall with my daughter's bedroom, I need a way to not wake her up and keep my neighbors happy while I continue to rock out (for certain values of the word "rock"). To wit:

1. I have seen numerous drum pad silencers for the Rock Band drum set, but none for the GH:WT drum set. Does anyone know of any, or will the Rock Band silencers work on my drums (I realize they won't do any good on the "cymbals")?

2. Can I somehow disable the click that the strum bar on the standard GH:WT guitar makes? I am willing to take the thing apart, if I must, but I'd like some detailed instructions if I am going to do that.

How does Rock Band for Wii compare to Xbox 360?

Should I buy an xbox 360 to maximize my Rock Band experience (instead of getting the game for my Wii)? Because this explanation is so long, I'll get right to the question: Wii owners, how is the Rock Band/Guitar Hero World Tour experience on Wii? Specifically, how is the DLC purchase/storage/loading, wifi, and graphics experience? Have you seen it compared to Xbox 360?

I have a Wii and love Rock Band and its kin. I have no such games now. I asked for nothing but Target gift cards for Christmas, and got several hundred dollars' worth, with the idea that I would buy the Guitar Hero World Tour full band kit ($175) plus the Rock Band 2 game ($50, compatible with GH:WT instruments) for Wii. That would be good rockin', but there are drawbacks, like (1) no Hi-Def output, (2) no Rock Band 1 tracks available, (3) some gimpiness on downloadable content in that Wii won't sell bundles of songs (for example, full albums) but instead you have to buy them song-by-song, (4) storage on Wii – at least for now – limited to SD cards no bigger than 2 gb (without clarity about how well they will work for storing and loading downloaded content), so I'd need to buy a few of those to hold DLC that I may buy. I also recently learned you need 1 Wii remote for every instrument you use, so I'd need to buy 2 more Wii remotes at $80 total to get the kit functional. So the total package cost would be about $350.

With that, I started thinking about xbox 360. A pro bundle with a 60 gb hard drive is $300. With the Rock Band 2 full band kit ($175), that's only $130 more than I would spend for the Wii version, and I get a 60gb xbox 360 out of the deal. That comes with lots of benefits, like (1) eventually I could add Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 1 game for super-max number of songs, (2) Xbox live, (3) DLC that is cheaper and easier to store, and (4) some future-proofness in that it has a big hard drive and outputs to HD.

I think xbox 360 is the way to go, but feel kind of odd about going out and buying a new system based primarily on the desire for one game.

LOL MATURITY

Buying an X-Box 360 or Wii in Korea -- language issues? I'm living in Korea and I miss me some video games. I'm thinking about purchasing an X-Box 360 or a Wii (easy to find here) but I was wondering how easy or difficult it would be (or possible, for that matter) to set up either console to display English. For example, with my Korean cell phone I was pretty much able to "switch" the whole thing into English in under 60 seconds.

FWIW, I can read Korean, albeit very slowly and only with a dictionary as of now.

I'm not as worried about getting English versions of games, but I would be bummed if I had trouble accessing all of the cool network content each console has to offer.

Anybody able to help a wayguk-saram out?

I just really don't want to plug another thing into the wall...

I have a cable modem provided by Time Warner Cable of NYC (seen here). The back of the device has one 10 Base-T port (ethernet jack) and one USB type B jack. Can I connect a laptop to the USB jack and my Xbox 360 to the ethernet jack? If not, is there anyway to connect multiple devices, wired or wirelessly, to the internet without needing an additional power source?

Ideally I would like to connect:

1 Laptop (connected wired or wirelessly)
1 Xbox 360 (and I am willing to buy the official wireless adapter if necessary)
1 Wii (and I am willing to buy the USB wired adapter if necessary)

Connecting the Wii is the lowest priority for me.

Is there anything I could connect to the USB Type B port to set up a wireless network without using another power plug?

Is there an ethernet switch that does not require power? Maybe one that runs on magic?

Could I replace the cable modem with one that would do the same job, but provide a few extra ports or wireless?

FWIW, all of these devices are in about a 3 foot radius.

I am seriously out of room on my surge protector here.

How to make my monitor serve as a display for computer, Wii, and Xbox 360?

Buying a new LCD monitor for my desktop computer. How do I know if a monitor can also serve as a display for Wii, PS2, Xbox 360? Or, what extra thingamajigs do I need to make this happen? Now, I'm sure this information is sitting right under my nose, but it's all in techspeak that is beyond me.

What ports do I have to watch out for on a LCD monitor, that will enable it to be hooked up to my gaming systems? Or, what extra cables do I need to make this happen?

Which gaming rig will come out on top in 2007?

Now that the dust has started to settle after the first round of the “next-gen” console battle, i think it's time to bite the bullet and decide how my next 2 years of gaming will be spent... X-Box 360, PS3, Wii, or a new PC? Without everyone getting all fanboy on us all (that's so 2006), I'd like to know what everyone's thoughts are on the current state of gaming and which system will really hold up for the next few years.

I'm a casual console gamer and was at one point was a serious PC gamer. My girlfriend is into sims and adventure games, which makes me lean towards a new PC. But I think a console might encourage us to play together.

I'm also really into the idea of building my own gaming PC and turning my old dell into a server or maybe a mythTV box. But the costs associated with doing this are double, if not triple the cost of the console (unless I follow something like the Tom's Hardware 4 GHz dual core DIY for $720).

So what's a lapsed gamer supposed to do...? Extra points for the PC gaming enthusiasts if anyone has a guide for an affordable DIY gaming rig.
