I have a small netbook (Samsung NC10), running Windows XP, that I very much like for travel. But in some places, it doesn't connect to the internet over wifi. I've never tried to figure out why, or fix it: it's so far always been somewhere I could either skip being connected for a few days or plug directly into a router. But for an upcoming trip I'd like some help with a better plan and some tools and resources. [more inside]

I can't figure out whether it's possible to force Skype to use available wifi signals, rather than my data allowance, on my unlocked Nexus 4. I'm using a T-Mobile no-contract sim, and I can see why the carriers would like to discourage this, but since the phone's unlocked (bought directly from Google) I'm thinking it must be possible. Is it?

I am trying to set up a surplus router as a NAS and torrent appliance, to integrate into an existing network. The setup will use two routers, one to provide network and internet to everyone, the other will use TomatoUSB and will be dedicated to torrenting. [more inside]

We have two offices, front (sales) and back (paperwork) and we have our "main" router in the front, which serves the front desk computers, and then from the router we have run Ethernet to the back office into a hub which then serves a bunch of PCs, a printer, and, we would like, a Wi-Fi router (or rather a router with Wi-Fi). The purpose of the Wi-Fi router connected to the hub is only to allow Wi-Fi devices access to the network. Unfortunately, for some reason, when the router is connected to the hub, all the other PCs also connected to the hub pull their IPs from the Wi-Fi router's DHCP / use it as gateway instead of the "main router" in the front office. Why is this? [more inside]

My old PC laptop runs perfectly as do any tablets on my apt public wi-fi. The iMac computer (Snow Leopard), slows to a halt and won't get to pages after a few times. I have done several things such as reset PRAM, gone to /Library/Preferences and moved all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash, and restarted Mac...The second bit helped for a week and now it is doing it again, no matter what browser. MacKeeper says the computer is alright, and airport utility just tells me I am connected to the internet. (I've done the reconnecting and assistant and diagnostics but nada...) I cannot figure this out and I have scoured the net. If somebody was downloading a ton on it, I would at least understand but any other devices work fine. My husband wants throw it out the window. Any ideas?

At work, my wifi connection frequently stalls (MacBook Pro 9,1, OS X 10.8.2). The connection never drops, but websites will "hang" while loading and I am unable to receive/send mail. Although I'm still connected, if I click the Wifi icon on the menu bar so that it starts "Looking for Networks", the connection is immediately restored. This happens every 4-5 minutes. [more inside]

Annoying Verizon FIOS wireless router issue: if iPad/iPhone are on the wireless network, Windows laptop machines will not connect to wireless network. If I turn off WiFi on iPad/iPhone and restart the router,
Windows machines get on WiFi right away. But after Windows machines are connected to WiFi, starting up WiFi on the iPad will almost always cause the Windows machines to drop their connections. More after the jump... [more inside]

I'm a Sandy refugee, living with friends until my power's restored (latest estimate: 11/9). There's got to be a way to remotely detect that - to sniff for current in an AC plug, or detect light from a bulb or the reestablishment of my WiFi network....and then use the WiFi to let me know. The tech would be trivial. Does anything like that (aside from $$$ home monitoring set-ups) exist? Or could I rig one up?

Is the new Google tablet worth it or practical? As a non-tech savvy person, who has only ever used a desktop, and would like to buy an affordable tablet it would be great to get experienced tech savvy thoughts about this new gizmo that popped up on the Google front page today. Is it safe to walk around with one's tablet connected to wifi, if one's tablet is meshed with one's Google account? Can hackers then access one's Google account easily?

I'm going to be in Manhattan this week, and need the power of the hivemind. I'm staying with friends for the weekend, so I don't have (or need) hotel reservations for Friday. This creates the problem, however, of where to work remotely while I'm there.
I understand that the NYPL is great for working... as long as you're quiet. But if I needed to voip conference with the rest of my team without annoying people around me (and being able to hear them in turn), without the benefit of a hotel room... where should I go?
Preference for being easy accessible from NYPL branches, which is where I'm planning on spending most of my time.
I saw the link to open wifi NYC
in a previous post, but that only solves part of the problem.
