Cable modem, Time capsule, and various Macs. When I put the time capsule into 802.11n only mode, I get about 30mbps. When I put the time capsule into 802.11n (a compatible) mode, I get about 60mbps. Why could that be? [more inside]
My business has a remote office that has a terribly slow DSL connection. A mobile hotspot there can provide a much faster internet connection. Is there a wireless ethernet bridge that will support multiple devices? [more inside]
I use Grande Communications internet in Austin Texas, (110mbps up 10 mbps down) my Wi-fi speed able to attain on my laptop in the same room as the modem is about 100mbps. Often, from the same location, the highest speed I can attain (speedtest.net) is like 2mbps. I tested on my laptop and phone. I reset the modem to factory settings, I changed the channel of wi-fi. No one else is using the same channel as I am, and it usually only drops to slow in the evening, and by morning it's better. (I am using a top of the line Arris Surfboard SBG6782-AC which cost about $200)
My personal music collection is divided between vinyl records (easily played over the stereo, no problems there) and over 70GB of music mp3s on my laptop. I almost never listen to my mp3s anymore because laptop speakers suck and I'm past the point of listening to my music on headphones only; and also because I still haven't figured out a way to wirelessly send/access (either via wifi, bluetooth or cloud storage) the music to my TV or to my amplifier directly. I'm planning my first (and hopefully not last) international vacation and I'd like to get a smartphone for traveling that can be used on a prepaid basis for both voice and data. When not traveling it will not be used as a phone, although I'd still like it to perform double duty as a mp3/move player at home. Home is the united states and travel will be to Iceland (and beyond). [more inside]

My iPad 3 (the first retina) running iOS 8.1 will drop the wi-fi connection fairly regularly. This often happens when streaming video via BBC iPlayer or YouTube apps. Any suggestions on how to fix it? [more inside]
I recently bought a new router (Archer AC1750) to fix my crappy home wi-fi. It helped, but the second floor of the house still had some issues. Then my cable company (Time Warner) sent me a new cable modem with built-in wi-fi, rendering my new router superfluous. The new modem is also good, not quite as good as the Archer, and my second floor still has poor signal. I'm wondering, can the Archer be used somehow to improve the second floor signal, in some kind of unholy alliance between it and the Time Warner modem/router?
We have a wireless network at work that is being misused by neighbours. Our IT guy and I need help with keywords to ask for security solutions as Google is giving me adware articles, and I do SOHO macs, not PC networks. [more inside]
My Airport Extreme (A1143 model) is having issues in our new house. It was built in the 50's so the floor has lots of metal in it due to the plastering of the ceiling below. We get wifi in part of the finished basement but no the whole thing, and even the "good" part drop pretty frequently. [more inside]
I've been syncing my iphone via itunes on my windows laptop for years. I've also used the same itunes install to hold my media library (mounted via a NAS on the wifi router.) I use Outlook to manage contacts. Just got a mac mini to use as a media server. I want to sync through that now. I'm not sure if going through icloud is the right choice. Is it? [more inside]

As a conversation-starter at a legal technology conference, I would like to set up a "Wall of Sheep". Assume I know what I'm getting into legally. Is there a "wall of sheep innabox" that would get me enough results in realtime to throw some stuff onto a screen at our booth? It has been years since I've fired up a sniffer myself. [more inside]
I need a wifi extender/booster. I lease a modem from Comcast. Which booster/extender do I buy from Amazon? [more inside]
I just set up a Chromecast. Casting from the Chrome browser on my Windows PC works fine, as does Youtube on my Android phone (Droid Maxx running 4.4.4). No other apps (tried Netflix, Google Play Music & Movies, and HBOGo) work (won't even show the cast icon). I also tried Netflix with an iPad (running iOS 7, but not the latest version) and it didn't allow me to cast either. But I am able to successfully see the Chromecast device from both my phone and iPad using the Chromecast app. What might be the problem?
If I'm on my workstation at the office, using Pages through iCloud.com on a web browser, how likely is it that my IT department can see what I'm typing? I am a Verizon FIOS customer using Verizon's modem/router combo. I am having some problems getting a strong signal in one room of my house. I am torn between two options, and I would love your input. [more inside]
I'm currently setting up for my wedding reception tonight, and we'd planned to use our Philips Hue bulbs for lighting. We brought our router, hub, and lights, but the venue only has wifi, and it looks like the router needs an internet connection to have everything working. HALP. Details inside. [more inside]
I'm based in the UK and will be spending a week somewhere that has no broadband. The reception on most networks seems to be changeable though it's strongest on Vodafone. Is there a 3G/4G wireless router that can take multiple SIM cards or dongles so that I can connect together more than one network and thus maximise my chances of getting connectivity?
I own an old Samsung Galaxy SII Android phone. I've recently cancelled its 3G plan, so now it accesses the Internet exclusively through Wifi. This has apparently caused its GPS function to stop working when it's out of range of a Wifi network, which I hadn't expected. I'd like to resume using it as a mobile GPS device without re-purchasing a 3G plan. Do you know whether this can be done? [more inside]
I have an Mac airport express base station next to the cable modem downstairs. I'd like to sit in my local park and work on my Macbook. Where I sit is about 100 metres away, with a direct line-of-sight to the upstairs of the house, give or take the odd tree branch and squirrel. What I think I need, therefore, is a basic booster station in an upstairs window, that overlooks this park. What options do I have? Any advice appreciated! [more inside]
Actually, it's a friend of mine who is suffering without internet. He's on a Greyhound for the next 17 hours. Wifi and power outlets on the bus aren't working. Driver doesn't know how to fix it. I guess this is a long shot, but does anyone know if these buses have circuit breakers or something that can be reset, or other ideas for how to get wifi and power working?
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro, 15", a1286. recently, when i turn on the computer the wifi works for maybe one minute, then even though the airport signal stays strong, i can't connect to anything. I ordered a used wifi card off of ebay, and the same thing happens. so i'm guessing it's not the wifi card, but the flex cable, the antenna, a software bug, or (worst of all worlds) the logic board itself. I ordered a new flex cable, and i hope that fixes the issue. If it doesn't, has anyone else had this problem before, and would recommend anything? If it's not the cable i really hope it's a software bug. I'd hate to replace the logic board, otherwise known as "buying a new computer"

I'm moving to a new house, and it is wired with cat 5e. I'd like to set up a wifi network with one wifi access point on one side of the house, and one wifi access point on the other side of the house. What hardware would you recommend and how do I do it? [more inside]
So I am thinking about setting up my Linksys E3200 router as a wireless repeater to extend the range of my home wifi connection, since I'm chained to Comcast's abysmal modem/router combo until September. Once I have turned the router into a repeater, will I be able to turn it back into a regular router? [more inside]
I live in a three story/family condo. We have been sharing cable Internet access for the last few years. It works fine. I've extended the signal with a few old dd-wrt routers configured as wireless repeaters. However, we want a little more out of this network. By searching some past posts, I've found a few options, but would like some input before I make a final decision. [more inside]

I would like to connect two homes that are about 150m apart in order to share an internet connection. Unless convinced otherwise the cheapest solution is likely a point-to-point wireless link at 2.4ghz (using directional antennas and tomatousb/ddwrt). I have line of sight but there are some trees in the way: is this feasible? Bonus: will cheap 14 dbi panel antennas be good enough with the trees?
My wireless connections aren't cooperating, but a wired connection to the wireless router is working. Help, por favor. [more inside]

I'm interested in getting a few residential security cameras installed to cover our yard and car areas. Requirements are: ~40 feet night vision, decent motion detection, networked recording to central PC/DVR unit (either over WiFi or PoE power), no batteries, weatherproof, not easily stolen. There are plenty of cameras with good tech specs, but many of them look like warp engines. I imagine putting up giant cameras will not only piss off the neighbors, but serve as a giant ROB ME I HAVE STUFF sign. What exterior cameras are not only good but inconspicuous? [more inside]
Currently use TW cable with one of their rental modems. Would like to buy my own and add wifi to my home. I use an iMac, a couple of iPhones and will possibly add a tablet soon. No gaming. Home is under 2000sq ft. Use is mostly casual internet, work related. Occasionally download movies. Stream from my mac to my stereo would be nice. Can anyone make any recommendations? I don't need anything top end but would care to avoid too rapid obsolescence. TIA
