Seeking librarians' input on hotspot lending

Our local library will soon start lending mobile wi-fi hotspot devices (similarly to what BPL and KPL have done), and I am interested to learn about the experience of others who have engaged in similar projects. [more inside]

Wireless bridge throughput for home networking - better than repeater?

I've read some of the previously posted questions on this (not to mention Googling) and still have not read a 100% clear answer. I know that using an extender/repeater slashes bandwidth. But if I use a wireless bridge, instead, will throughput be higher? [more inside]

I'm going to Cadillac, MI, and need to use the internet.

I'm going to Cadillac, MI on a Friday through Monday "vacation" (that is, I'll need to work while I'm there). I'll probably need 16-24 hours of ~1.5 mbps or faster internet over the four day period, on my own laptop. I'm fairly sure that our Airbnb-type accommodations don't have an internet connection/WiFi. Tethered mobile data probably won't be an option. Where can I go to use the internet for several hours at a time? I don't mind paying for it or purchasing something so I can use it.

What music streaming gadget am I looking for?

I need something that can connect to the internet by WiFi, and to my receiver by standard RCA connectors. Ideally, I'd like to be able to select and control the music by a web interface or phone app, and be able to play music from my laptop as well as from various internet streaming services. What's the best option out there? [more inside]

Time for a new wifi router?

After years of trouble-free operation, my 4 year old Linksys N750 wifi router has begun having problems, mainly that it drops the internet connection on the 2.4 G band (but not the 5 G band curiously enough). That is to say, the 2.4G Wifi connection isn't itself lost, just that the 2.4G channel loses its internet connectivity. It seems to happen mostly in the evenings. Since my phone and the Wii we watch Netflix through can only use 2.4G, this has become very annoying. [more inside]

Devices share bandwidth on a network. WiFi networks compete for bandwidth with each other. Is it better from a user/performance perspective to have multiple networks and spread the devices out among them, or a single network with all devices using it? [more inside]

15" macbook wifi failure

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro, 15", a1286. recently, when i turn on the computer the wifi works for maybe one minute, then even though the airport signal stays strong, i can't connect to anything. I ordered a used wifi card off of ebay, and the same thing happens. so i'm guessing it's not the wifi card, but the flex cable, the antenna, a software bug, or (worst of all worlds) the logic board itself. I ordered a new flex cable, and i hope that fixes the issue. If it doesn't, has anyone else had this problem before, and would recommend anything? If it's not the cable i really hope it's a software bug. I'd hate to replace the logic board, otherwise known as "buying a new computer"

Do Karma and FreedomPop use the same wireless network(s)?

I actually have a FreedomPop Wifi hotspot, but it doesn't work in some places that I'd like it to.. so recently, I've heard about Karma, which sounds very similar, but when I check the Karma wireless coverage maps it seems to cover the areas I need it to... but it looks like FreedomPop and Karma both use Sprint's network? However, Sprint has a few different networks, and I think its Clearwire might not be used by my FreedomPop device? Do I have this right? Anyone with better knowledge of Sprint's MVNOs?

Why are PCs pulling IPs from the wrong router? (Diagram included)

We have two offices, front (sales) and back (paperwork) and we have our "main" router in the front, which serves the front desk computers, and then from the router we have run Ethernet to the back office into a hub which then serves a bunch of PCs, a printer, and, we would like, a Wi-Fi router (or rather a router with Wi-Fi). The purpose of the Wi-Fi router connected to the hub is only to allow Wi-Fi devices access to the network. Unfortunately, for some reason, when the router is connected to the hub, all the other PCs also connected to the hub pull their IPs from the Wi-Fi router's DHCP / use it as gateway instead of the "main router" in the front office. Why is this? [more inside]

iMac slows to a halt but everything other device/computer+ kitchen sink works??

My old PC laptop runs perfectly as do any tablets on my apt public wi-fi. The iMac computer (Snow Leopard), slows to a halt and won't get to pages after a few times. I have done several things such as reset PRAM, gone to /Library/Preferences and moved all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash, and restarted Mac...The second bit helped for a week and now it is doing it again, no matter what browser. MacKeeper says the computer is alright, and airport utility just tells me I am connected to the internet. (I've done the reconnecting and assistant and diagnostics but nada...) I cannot figure this out and I have scoured the net. If somebody was downloading a ton on it, I would at least understand but any other devices work fine. My husband wants throw it out the window. Any ideas?
