Most people have heard the mantra that wheat bread is "good" but white bread is bad.
However, virtually all commercial wheat breads contain added sugars in some form (molasses, etc.) while it is possible to obtain commercial white breads with zero added sugars (e.g. scali or Italian bread) and sugar is meant to be "bad" for us, contributing to cancer, obesity and diabetes.
From a scientific or evidence standpoint, how do the relative merits of sugarless white and whole wheat breads stack up assuming one buys the best quality option from each category?

I was at a Mexican corner grocery last night, and on a whim bought this bread
. It's really good, and I want to know what it is. It's really dense and wheaty, with a bit of sweetness (kind of like a honey wheat.) The only label is the one in the picture (enhanced
). I've tried searching the word in label, and get nothing! What is it?

Practical, science-based, safe, sane "low carb" book that doesn't pull any punches? (If simply "Atkins," which one?) I'm looking for a book that is gung-ho, but still spells out what can go wrong and why: I'm three days in to a self-created low carb diet. All sorts of good stuff has happened, but all sorts of disconcerting stuff has happened, too. [more inside]

I don't seem to be allergic to wheat, but eating wheat makes me allergic to many other things, including uncooked fruits, nuts and vegetables (except citrus), general seasonal allergies, animals, etc. When I stop eating wheat, my allergies to ALL of these things go away. It's crazy. Why does this happen? [more inside]

Is the place where the de facto
price of grain is set world-wide, the Chicago Board of Trade "wheat pit," still a cacophony of live in-person bidders yelling and making hand signals while wearing platform shoes and bright jackets, or has it become electronic and silent? Or are both types of bidding possible? If it changed, when did it do so and why?

I enjoy whole wheat and multigrain bread. What I don't enjoy is flatulence. What ingredients should I check for on the bread labels to avoid that result?

I ran out of crackers the other day and decided to try making my own. I can't say the finished product was exactly what I had in mind when the cracker craving struck, but tasty they were, and now I'm on a quest. Anyone here have a crispy, savory cracker recipe to share? [more inside]

What is the difference between wheat free and gluten free? I know it has something to do with proteins--I'm finding a lot of stuff about the gluten side but not a lot about just the wheat. More importantly, if someone is allergic to wheat but not gluten, can she drink non-wheat beer, like Budweiser?

DH and I are looking at grinders -- specifically, grinders that can handle whole wheat berries but we will, of course, use this grinder for whatever else we can (coffee, for example). Looking for your experiences with and recommendations for grinders, as well as your ideas for what to do with ground substances. There is [more inside]

Lots of time when you read labels some of them say "whole wheat" or "wheat" or "white whole wheat." I read about it in a book about stone ground and steel ground, but was still confused. Can anyone explain the difference and also the difference in nutritional value?

What did Sandy Duncan Say in her Wheat Thins commercials? Seems like she had a tag line, but it certainly wasn't "mmmm, good cracker" or "just a pinch between your cheek and gum." I'd love to have a whole transcript of one of those commercials, but what was it she said? "The little cracker with the big taste?"
