Whale Watching in CA, I will be traveling to Bakersfield CA in the next couple of days and spending some time there and in Santa Monica. Anyone know of somewhere I could go and take a whale watching trip while there? (within a reasonable driving distance from either location)

Just finished watching an episode of
Whale Wars, and I was wondering: are there any groups that do this sort of thing on land? Meaning, volunteer, nonprofessional or otherwise NGO-type people who confront and interfere with poachers in the wild, head-on and dangerously?

Can you help me remember this barely remembered cartoon from my childhood? A community of alien looking people live on a floating island and go out in flying boats to catch flying whales. Every so often one of them would turn blue and die, and they would throw him down a well. The well was actually a hole passing through the island and as the body fell it would turn into a new sky whale. Any ideas?

I have just read
an article in the New Scientist about the Chile Whaling Conference. The article describes how Japan is allowed to catch 1000 whales each year for scientific purposes, yet has been accused of allowing some of the meat to make it's way to the dinner table.
I lived in Japan a couple of years ago, and every supermarket seemed to sell small quantities of whale meat, and it wasn't a particularly rare sight in many restaurants.
Would this meat be part of this, presumeably illegal, "for scientific purposes only", catch? Or do they have a separate quota for food use?

I am looking for the name of the artist who created the “over capacity whale” and “technically wrong robot” illustrations for Twitter. Any information or pointers would be amazingly helpful.

A long time ago I cherished a shirt. It had a drawing of a whale on it, below text that read "Save The Cows." A speech bubble attached to the whale read "I am not a cow." Either that or the roles were reversed. Or they could have been different animals entirely - though I doubt that. Where did this adorable tee come from? There is nothing - NOTHING - more inside. Except your answers. I hope.

This
bone was found on a Cape Cod, Massachusetts beach this week. It is about 3" tall and about 3" from tip to tip of the "horns." It looks like a vertebra of some type, but I can find no images of similar ones online. Any marine biologists out there care to tell me what kind of a bone it is? Other images inside.
