And I mean one-of-a-kind—and good!—films and TV shows. (I've included film and TV examples in the 'Extended Explanation' portion of my thread.) [more inside]
I'm trying to find some interesting vacation destinations. Recommend me some cities/towns that have unusual annual/semi-annual events or attractions. The more obscure and odd, the better. [more inside]
It could be a novel, a non-fiction book, a diary, poem or play. Bonus question: how about the weirdest book from other global literary traditions?
What is the straight up weirdest double-take inducing NFL branded product that you have seen? I'm way beyond t-shirts, coozies, and grilling equipment. I'm talking things like an adult onesie. But that's the bar I have to meet. Also of interest: weird items for sale that are branded with comic book stuff.
My legs have developed some weird pigmentation. It doesn't hurt, it just looks super unfortunate. I want to be better armed before a doctor's appt. Help? [more inside]
Several years ago I found some instructions for building your own (banquette style, I think) seating out of plywood, foam, etc. What sticks out in my memory was the author introducing the need for new furniture. It was something like this: 'I loaned my apartment to some filmmakers for a shoot. After the fact, I discovered they made porn, and you can guess what they used my couch for. (They had sex on it.) Obviously I need new furniture.' Can you track down this page?
Any examples of animal species that are vastly different or behave differently, eat differently than the rest of their species. [more inside]
I steam potatoes in the steamer. Did this 14 oz one up, cut open when done, wtf is that in the dead center? Russet. am I THAT hungry?
Help me find the weird, the wacky, the whimsical, the quirky, the offbeat participatory activities in Los Angeles? [more inside]
What sites do you visit to find news of the weird? Huffington Post's Weird section is kind of bland - I'd like something that covers bizarre crimes, fortean news, unusual findings in science, conspiracy theory related stories, and news of the occult.
My wife brought home this flower, which looks sort of like a fuzzy ear of corn made out of cotton on some very spiky leaves. Any hints on what it is? I've used online resources to no avail.
For the past few days, I've had this weird fluttering/vibrating sensation in my right ear off and on. You know when your eyelid gets twitchy? It feels like that, but way down in my ear, like my eardrum is twitching, and it's driving me crazy. [more inside]
What are the weirdest, strangest, wrongest edible items that I can order RIGHT NOW and have in two days via Amazon Prime? Gummi chicken feet is a good place to start.
Yay, weekend in New York! I'll be landing at Newark at 6:30, so it will be 7:30 or so by the time I'm out of customs. The friend I'm visiting suggests taking the Air Train to another train that will get me to New York Penn station, and take a cab from there. Would it be easier to take a cab the whole way? inertia and I will be spending a week and a half in Paris at the end of May. I’ve read the relevent wikitravel and tripadvisor pages and I’m familiar with all of the main tourist attractions. But we’re not sure what we should go see. She’s been twice before but I’ve never been. Give us all of your off-the-beaten-path Paris-related travel recommendations! [more inside]
I was going to go sky diving to "celebrate" my job being eliminated (I like the symbolism), but weigh too much. Instead, I'm trying to think of something in the Baltimore area to do that I haven't done before to start my forced unemployment. [more inside]
What are some podcasts with strange stories (fiction & non-) that sound good late at night? Some Examples:
- Getting On with James Urbaniak
- The surreal monologues of Joe Frank
- The musings & investigations of Jon Ronson and Scott Carrier on Jon Ronson On..., Home of the Brave, and This American Life
- Tales of the weird and conspiratorial on Coast To Coast AM
Name that pro-weirdness novelty song? [more inside]
I have been reading creepy things, and listening to creepy stuff while I read those creepy things, and have arrived unprepared at the horrifying realization that I do not have as much weird, unsettling, mysterious music as I should. Help me fix that--before it's too late. [more inside]
What would lead to these very small toilet paper scraps ending up on the bathroom floor? [more inside]
There is a building in Woodley Park, DC that looks completely normal from the front and burnt-out and abandoned from the back. I lived a few doors down from it for about 15 months and never saw anyone go in or out of the back part of the building. Any idea what the deal is, or how I could research this? [more inside]
If I like(d) The Babadook, Confessions, Under the Skin, Gone Girl, and Welcome to Night Vale, what should I read/watch/listen to next? [more inside]
Lay your weirdest calendars on me. [more inside]
Wee Thumbscrew, aged nine, is a weird, morbid, hilarious child. Lately, at bedtime, we've been reading "weird Wikipedia" articles together, and they have been a HUGE hit. Please provide us with some of YOUR favorite utterly deranged Wiki pages. Spooky/gory/X-Files-y stuff is a-okay, real-life serial killers or smutty stuff is not. Here are some entries we've enjoyed: [more inside]
For about as long as I can recall (roughly 30ish years) I've had an odd recurring pain in my collarbone area. What might this be, and has anyone else experienced anything similar? [more inside]
I am newly single, against my will. In the next two months, half of my friends are getting married. Everyone else I know is in a long term relationship. I am the, like, seventeenth wheel. I have absolutely no interest in ever being in a relationship again until the sun burns out. Please help me not feel really weird around my friends. [more inside]
Has any subject of a "Weird Al" Yankovic parody ever done a cover of their parody song in concert? Like, has Devo ever performed "Dare to be Stupid"?
I have two Jack Russell Terriers, both sixish years old, and both with odd licking issues. One licks the exposed skin of people: legs, hands, feet. If you push him away, he will lick the couch. He has done this since he was a puppy, and though I think it's odd and slightly embarrassing when he goes to town on an unwitting friend's shin, it doesn't concern me. Our other dog has started licking his own front legs, above his paws (what his forearm would be if he were a person), so much that they are stained pink. He's done this for a few months now. When I took him to our vet for his yearly checkup, I asked whether she thought it was allergies. She said no, that it could be anxiety or arthritis. She didn't get into much depth (she is new to our vet office, and I don't know that I love her). He walks and runs just fine, so I don't think he is in pain. Does anyone out there have experience with compulsive canine lickers? Do I try to stop them (and if so, how?), or just let them be weird? Or do I change to a new vet who might be a bit more forthcoming?
I've been reading Scouting NY ever since Slap*Happy's post about Willets Point and loving it the descriptions of bizarre landmarks, unusual neighborhoods, and hidden bits of history and culture in NYC. What are the equivalent places in Washington, DC? [more inside]
My favorite place in the entire world is Philadelphia's exquisite and incomparable Mütter Museum, I've seen Body Worlds more than a dozen times... and you should probably refrain from clicking either of those links if you are squeamish. I will soon be spending a week in NYC followed by a week in Washington, DC. Can you help me make a list of similar museums, exhibits, and collections to visit while I'm there? [more inside]
Why do I wake up after a few hours if I go to bed early specifically because I am super tired (not because I have to get up early for a flight or something), rather than just sleeping my normal length time? [more inside]
I've gotten a pair of phone calls that seem too weird to be unrelated when they're so close together but I can't make head or tails about what it could mean. [more inside]
I'm fascinated with the Uncanny Valley theory and would like to see more examples of it. I'll look at anything: YouTube, movies, articles, books, video games - you name it, I want to see it. I've looked at several things online and have poured over the wikipedia entry for it, but I want to see the truly weird and far out examples of uncanny valley. Weird me out, MeFi!
i've been scouring the web for free and weird sound generators, sequencers etc... i've found a few interesting things, and i know others exist. i will sample a few i've found below, can you share any you might've found? i would like to use this stuff for ambient/electronica music i create. :D looking for experimental and new ways of creating digital music. highc synth zone tune toys preferably for windows... :D
My jam did the thing again -- it levitated in the jar overnight. I took a photo this time. I'm asking again in the hopes that someone new may have a definitive answer, as I'd like to know for sure if this means the jam is now inedible. [more inside]
I'm looking to find / make / adapt a costume for a fine art photoshoot that I'm currently planning. The character in the picture is one from myth, who is said to have a skirt made from flayed human skin. Short of sending Ramsay Snow's a raven or becoming Buffalo Bill, how can I put together a costume that will look as creepy-beautiful as I need? [more inside]
What are some exceptionally weird tie-in novels and comics? I'm looking for books which are especially weird as a result of not fitting the tone or form of the source material, or of the usual tie-in product. Preferably in fantasy, sci-fi, & horror. [more inside]
So I went to a strip club when I was pretty intoxicated and feeling lonely and depressed. Long story short I got a series of lap dances where you were allowed to touch the strippers. I feel tremendous guilt and shame about going there and objectifying women. [more inside]
I'm looking for recommendations for unusual guidebooks to Seattle and the surrounding area, with a particular emphasis on ghost stories, the supernatural, the strange in general and the just plain odd. Being well tied in to historical context would be an advantage, as would be meatier text rather than just bullet points and captioned photos.
I bought a bias-cut skirt made of t-shirt type fabric from Muji last week. It fit perfectly and draped beautifully and I was in love with it. Now I have washed it (40 degrees C, gentle setting) and it shrank really unevenly. It (just) still fits, but the hemline is dorky and uneven, and the skirt bulges weirdly at the seams. Is there anything I can do to save this? Rewashing and stretching? I can't return it to the store as I was travelling and there's no Muji here.
I've started getting threatening phone calls from my ex's new girlfriend and I'm trying to figure out what's going on. [more inside]
An old (free) checking account in another state started becoming inconvenient (no local locations and bad phone service), so I moved my direct deposit elsewhere. I left a little money in the account, thinking having an older account would help with credit. I recently found out, however, that several months ago, they closed down the free checking service and switched to a fee checking service. While this was happening, it eventually drained the money out of the checking account and went negative. They apparently also closed the account for overdrafting, How badly is this going to affect my credit? Can I take any steps to mitigate it? [more inside]
I see three left hands. Why?
I've lived in Auckland (on the Shore) for a year, and I've seen all the really popular touristy stuff (the Sky Tower, Waiheke Island, the War Memorial Museum, etc). Now I'm wanting to find the fun weird stuff that locals know about. Like if Auckland had a UFO museum (it does not, to the best of my knowledge)? That's the sort of thing I mean. Any suggestions? Can be places to go, things to do, stuff to eat, whatever. Anything outside Auckland is okay too as long as it's not, say, more than an hour or so's drive away.
I'm looking for a bizarre animated music video, possibly originating from Korea or Japan, which I've spent an hour googling fruitlessly. [more inside]
I like weird/creepy (but not "boo" scary!) stuff. Do you have that itch too? If so, help me scratch it! What are some good books or sites on the internet that I haven't seen with weird stuff? [more inside]
I'm looking for blogs that cover old and/or niche technology, in the vein of Something Awful's "Obsolete technology" thread or JWZ' "retrocomputing" tag. Suggestions?
