Why am I so fat?

I am a 40 year old woman. I'm 5'6" and weigh about 200lbs. I know why I am so fat; I eat a lot and never exercise. But what I don't know is why I don't look after my body the way I do the rest of my life. I have read and heard lots of times that a lot of weight issues are related to emotional issues but I'm happy. I don't have any major issues. If you were like this, how did you finally motivate yourself to lose weight and get healthy? [more inside]

I hate my fat face!

I've recently lost quite a bit of weight after a couple of decades of being overweight, but while the rest of my body is shrinking, my face is the same ol' big fat face. Can I expect it to deflate at some point? Is there anything I can do about it other than just continuing to lose weight? Or am I doomed to end up like Michael Palin in Brazil?

Un-supersize me. Difficulty: mental health

With anxiety, chronic depression and ADHD (I'm being treated for all), I struggle sometimes to get out of bed and go to work, let alone exercising and making healthy food (I know, I know, 30 minutes daily exercise is the single biggest thing for health). Where do I start? It seems huge and impossible. I have some spare cash to throw at this, but I’m reluctant to buy expensive clothes racks that take up space in my tiny flat and accuse me silently. If you have any ideas/tips/links for an old (50ish) seriously unmotivated introvert with a BMI of 40 and the attention span of a lizard, that’d be good. If you see a (solvable) obstacle that I'm obviously missing, I'd appreciate your insight. [more inside]

An exercise plan that actually makes me sweat

So, I'm currently on a self-improvement kick that I'm looking to turn into a marathon. You might imagine that having cerebral palsy and being in a wheelchair adds a speedbump or two, and you'd be right. One of the things I've wanted to work on for a while has been my weight, flexibility and physical independence. I'm about 100 lbs overweight right now, and I know that much of the decrease in quality of life that I've experienced over the past few years has been my own doing. I either sit in the wheelchair, or a desk chair, or on a couch/bed. I never move. Ever. I know that needs to change, and I've spent considerable time researching wheelchair fitness, but haven't really found anything that fits my very particular needs. [more inside]

Turning the corner on 50 (pounds down)

In the past year or so, I’ve lost 46 lbs - which was 25% of my body weight. I have a goal to lose 5-10 lbs more, which would put me at a little over 50 lbs gone - and a coincidentally good zone for my size. I’d like to do, have, or make something to commemorate those 50 lbs. Not a reward - but I want to have something in my home, maybe on shelf somewhere, that I can look at as a visual reminder of that number and the work I put in for it. [more inside]

Maintaining significant weight loss: how do you do it?

A year and a half ago, I lost a large amount of weight, i.e. 75 lbs, or about 30% of my body weight on a very low calorie diet, under medical supervision. Although I was not able to follow the official maintenance program after moving to a new city, it was relatively easy to keep things stable for the first year. But, about four months ago, I notice that some of the weight--about eight lbs worth--had crept back on. Although I've lost five of them, the last three seem determined to stick around. This, combined with the dismal statistics on long-term maintenance (97% of people regain within five years), has me pretty scared. Have you beaten the odds, and if so, how do you do it? Also, what is the balance of food vs. activity in your regime? [more inside]
