My father (in his 80s) has just finished a series of joint-related surgeries. His appetite has been diminishing for years, but between the surgeries and some problems with his meds -- now resolved -- he was nauseated for a period and his weight plummeted. He's got his appetite back, more or less, but we can't seem to put weight back on. YANOD, but his doctor's advice is appetite and med-related, and we'd like to know what foods (or meals?) would be best for sustained, healthy weight gain. Thank you!

Can your weight increase by a greater amount than the weight of the food you eat? It seems to me that if I eat 500g of cake, then it couldn't possibly increase my body weight by more than 500g. Does this make sense? All my searching regarding this stuff deals in calories rather than mass/weight.
I am: vegan, mildy exercise-induced asthmatic, non-car owning & often-biking, slightly scoliotic (not visibly, but there's back pain here and there), have virtually no access to exercise equipment other than a set of ancient free weights, weight bench, and mat, without much money. I desire hulking guns and beefiness all over. [more inside]
