Vintage wedding dress back alteration

Sewists/sewers/seamstresses of askme, I need your help. I bought a beautiful 1930s lace wedding dress yesterday, but need to have the back altered because though the dress fits at the waist, the zipper won't close in the bust. Other non-sewer advice welcome in the style department. So. I fell in love with a 1930s lace floor length wedding dress in a vintage shop. Unfortunately, when I tried it on, it closed at the natural waist but not in the back. It looked absolutely stunning from the front, and just as I thought all was lost, the owner of the shop mentioned that they had a sewer in-house who does costume design and alterations, and they could simply take out the zipper, put a small one in up to the waist, and then do a ribbon lace-up back. Upon closer examination, the owner also suggested they could do an eyelet back, which I think might look better with this dress. She made it sound super simple, and even said they would throw in the alteration with the cost of the dress.

Now, the dress is bought and I'm going in for alterations Wednesday, and after one hour on the phone with my mom, who is an experienced but not professional sewer, I have some questions.

First off, here are some pics:
http://imgur.com/K7yWL8r.jpg
Sorry for the poor quality, I wasn't quite anticipating asking this question when I took them, so I also don't have shots of the back. The dress is currently at the shop until alterations Wednesday, so more photos are inaccessible, but I will try to describe it to the best of my ability. I believe there are two seams, on on either side of the zipper, so the back appears to have 3 panels of fabric. Below the waist, the back is identical to the front. At bust level, the zipper is maybe 1 or 2 inches from closing I think.

The questions:
-What would be the best way to fix the back, both fashion-wise and technique-wise? Ribbon lace-up? Eyelet opening? Perhaps something like this ? Something else I haven't thought of?
-How "simple" is this fix, really? I don't want to ruin a beautiful dress by doing a quickie fix that ends up not sitting right.
-My mom has offered to go to the sewer with me on Wednesday to talk about options. Considering the owner said it would be a quick fix, would the sewer be annoyed by our questions? I'm willing to pay more to get the job done right.

Please please tell me this is possible. I am really looking for solutions and would be heartbroken if I couldn't make this dress work.

Thanks in advance for your help, and I'll try to answer any questions promptly, as I'm sure that having never done more than stitch up a hem or a patch on to my backpack, , my sewing vocab is limited.

(Wedding) dresses for n00bs; where online to look and what search terms?

I am looking for a non-traditional wedding dress but am not finding a ton that I love in my city. When I looked at Nordstrom, which was the best of the available brick-and-mortar options, I found this, which I loved and looks good on me, but the navy is way too dark a color. If I want to find something with a similar fit and/or look online, what "dress words" do I search for, and where should I be looking? I'd gratefully accept any other suggestions for fits or dresses that might work, but it would help if you explained the vocabulary to me like I'm 7 so I can use it when I'm looking. I have a figure that's hourglass-y verging on pear and am about 5'2". I'm worried about looking WAY too busty or hippy, and I think one of the reasons the linked dress looks decent is that it fits closely up top, nips in at the waist and then skims any unpleasantness below. I'm probably looking for something in a green or blue.

Am I Being Crazy About Shiny Fabric?

Do you think that silk dupioni is the best choice of fabric for my wedding dress when I am plus-sized? I have described it in detail inside. I am getting married in October, and I'm looking for a 50s-style wedding dress with these requirements:
- knee- or tea-length full skirt to wear with a brightly-colored crinoline
- not strapless, not even strapless-with-a-bolero. Just no.
- a not-white color- gray is preferred.
- sized to fit a busty (US retail) 14-16

I really like this dress on Etsy and, less so, this dress from Trashy Vintage and this dress from Vivien of Holloway.
All three dresses are in a shiny fabric of some kind. The Etsy seller uses silk dupioni, the Trashy Vintage dress is a shiny cotton satin, and the Vivien of Holloway dress is a shiny polyester satin.

However, I'm concerned about shiny fabric! I am a US size 14/16, and while the full skirt/decolletage will be flattering, I'm worried about the dress photographing well or accentuating my figure flaws. The wedding will be held in a music venue at night with some stage lighting. Bad cameras will abound, as they do. I'm concerned about the shiny fabric in these circumstances. Obviously, I want to feel confident in my dress and look as nice as possible.

My favorite dress by far is the Etsy dress, and the silk dupioni is almost certainly a better fabric than the polyester satin of the Vivien of Holloway dress. I've seen the latter online a lot (their dresses are very recognizable) and I don't think they photograph well at all. But is the quality difference enough to make it more flattering?
The Etsy dress has a better neckline and more structure to the bodice, so it's preferable. I can also pick any color I like, and I could possibly ask for a different type of fabric. However, I worry that I will choose a fabric that is unsuitable as I just don't know enough about them. I also worry it will be a hassle for the dressmaker.

So:
- Do you think this is a reasonable concern? Does shiny fabric (of any type) accentuate figure flaws, even in this silhouette? Do you think the quality (the silk vs the poly satin) makes a difference?
- Do you think that color makes any difference? If I picked a silk dupioni in this charcoal or this dove gray, do you think the darker one would be more flattering?
- What kind of silk is more matte than dupioni, and could be made into a dress like this? If it's something that could be ordered from this vendor, that would be helpful. A similar price point is preferred.

To be clear, I live in a small town in the Midwest and there are no luxury fabric stores nearby. I prefer to shop online because bridal stores are scary. I also prefer to work with an established Etsy seller rather than a local seamstress; I've had some bad luck with the latter.

What should I wear with this? Part VIII: Bridal Edition

Mefi fashionistas: Help me jazz up my 60s wedding dress with just the right accessories! Pics inside... You all did such a great job helping me dress up for my best friend's wedding, I thought I'd get some more of the same for my own upcoming big day, which is happening next month here in London (!!). I found a really fabulous and flattering dress on Etsy + some really cute shoes on Zappos. Hair will be probably be up. Current accessories include pearl drop earrings with sentimental value, and an as-yet-unseen bracelet that my mom is currently making for me, but I'm lost trying to figure out the rest of the accessories and touches to pull everything together.

I'm inclined to keep going with a sort of 60s vintage look, but in my previous question, which also involved a period-style dress, some wise commenters cautioned me against looking to costume-y and I'd like to avoid that here, too.

Wedding details: just 20 guests (all family), town hall ceremony followed by canapes and then dinner, so hopefully a relatively chill day all around. Since the wedding is so small and brief--like my budget--, I'd also like to buy things I can feasibly use again.

Needs & questions:
-A wrap or jacket that might go well with the dress (or shoes??), and which I could wear comfortably inside if it's drafty (plus I tend to shiver when I'm tense or nervous no matter the temperature). I was briefly considering something like this or this, but they're meant more for outdoor pics than hanging around inside. I was thinking that since the dress is so structured, a loose wrap or shrug wouldn't go well, but I might be wrong. Maybe this in a different colour?

-Sash or no sash? I keep seeing them everywhere, but not sure if one would work here.

-Should my clutch match with the dress or shoes?

-Same question for the fascinator or birdcage veil I was thinking of wearing.

-Bonus question: Is this dress re-wearable? I have been assured that it is, but I have my doubts.

I'm looking forward to reading your suggestions. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

Beautiful wedding dress/evening gown for a pregnant lady?

I'm pregnant, and I'm getting married. Any advice for finding a beautiful, non-cutesy maternity wedding dress, or super luxe evening gown? Our exciting surprise will arrive in early June, and we're planning our wedding for February 23, in Las Vegas. It will be formal, but small and intimate (about 20 guests).

I'm looking online and having a hard time finding maternity dresses that (a) aren't white- I'd prefer a more champagne or silver tone; (b) aren't too pregnant lady cutesy; (c) could be tried on in person. An evening gown in a light color is also fine with me.

Here's the only dress I've found that I like, but I'm a bit wary of not being able to at least see it in person before taking the plunge. I'm typically a fearless online shopping ninja, with a good feel for what will be flattering on me, but this combination of circumstances is throwing me for a loop.

Do wedding boutiques usually have more maternity options than what's featured online? I'm 31, in Houston, and my budget ceiling is $1000, in case that helps.

Should I lose wedding weight?

I'm getting married in a year, and am currently a bit out of shape. I feel I should lose weight to fit into the nicer wedding dresses, but need feedback on how realistic/rational my goals are - especially given a complicated history. Also, how to deal with a fiance who has strong concerns about this whole thing? I'm really happy to be getting married, and just went to my first wedding dress try-on. Unfortunately, it left me feeling bad about myself. I had to call many, many places to get any places that had more than just a few dresses. Even the one that did didn't have very many dresses in my size, and the dresses that were in my size were either unflattering, or just not as nice (design, cloth, etc) as the ones that were a few sizes down. Even though my fiance ooohed and aaahed at the right moments, and said I looked beautiful, I really felt like I was getting a second-class wedding experience.

More than anything, I think I hate seeing all of these incredibly gorgeous dresses that I can't even try on to /see/ if they look good on me.

Part of me thinks the solution is simple: I just need to lose weight, then I can fit into the nice dresses. Apparently this is a Thing People Do (frantic wedding dress weight loss), and family members have started asking me if I will be doing this. But the other part of me thinks that it will be really stressful, and unnecessary, and I can just do some other thing unknown to me yet and everything will turn out fine. Also, I refuse to do any of the more extreme quick-fix methods, which kind of terrify me. I've thought of tailoring, but then I'm taking a shot in the dark with my Wedding Dress, which seems scary. Also, my fiance fell in love with me at this size, which is not even really unusual, and has repeatedly expressed that he thinks I'm being ridiculous and would look lovely in a burlap sack.

Part of the complicating factor is that I used to be extremely fit. At my peak "fighting trim," I weighed about forty pounds less than I do now. However, in order to achieve that, I was running several miles a day, and eating carefully chosen tiny meals. I was also in the Army, so I had people yelling at me about my body fat all the time as an additional motivator. And even then at a really low body fat percentage, I still had hips and breasts that maybe don't work with traditional wedding dress cuts.

Additionally, my fiance is worried about this. He thinks that trying to lose weight in this really focused way will remind me of the bad times and body image problems of the Army, and make me feel even worse about myself for gaining weight when I stopped running all the time. That my "fighting trim" weight was in fact a really unhealthy weight for my body type, and if I try to strive for it, I'll be really miserable. He is supportive, sort of, but really, really concerned. Also, he loves to cook, and loves to cook delicious things that I eat and enjoy and am very happy over - something that couldn't happen if I went back to bite-sized protein bits.

What do I do in this situation? And how much time do I have to decide? I keep seeing places that say you need to order your wedding dress six to eight months in advance.

tl; dr : Is losing weight for a wedding dress worth the stress? What to do when your fiance isn't on the same page?

Help me remix my wedding dress

I have a wedding dress. I have a black tie event in August. I want to wear a modified version of my perfect-for-me wedding dress to said black tie event. What are some things I can do to remix it? About the event: It's an award show. A handful of people attending the event also attended my wedding and will recognize the dress. That's OK.

About the dress: It's 100% polyester. It has a chapel-length train that can be bustled. The golden circle pin is removable. I would be more than willing to chop off the train or a significant portion of the dress, and I've already removed all the petticoats. It still has some volume, however.

Dyeing the dress is automatically out. I considered all the possibilities of doing it myself, and decided that doing it correctly would not be possible. I can't afford to pay someone else to do it (I've gotten quotes in the upper $200 to $500 to do it). Even a dip dye is out, as it's poly and dyeing poly is significantly more complex than natural fibers.

I would really like to paint it, but I literally know nothing about doing this. I'd like it to look like this, this, or this, rather than this or this. I have never done it before but have painted a bunch in my day, so the skill is there. Repetitive patterns seem risky to me, but I think I can do almost anything else. I just don't know where to start.

...That's it! I'm clueless, so I come to you, Metafilter! What can I do to remix this dress? Timeless ideas are ideal, as I'd like to keep this around for a while! I'm open to basically anything you can think of OTHER than dyeing it.

If you have any expertise or advice or even a link about painting on fabric, I want to know about it! Thank you!

What can I make from the fabric from my wedding dress's train?

I'm having the train removed from my wedding dress-- what can I do with the leftover material as a keepsake? I got my wedding dress from Brides Against Breast Cancer and plan to donate it back there after the wedding. I love the dress but it has a long train and I really want something that looks and feels simpler and less cumbersome, so I'm going to have the train taken off when I go for alterations. Since I won't be keeping the dress, I like the idea of doing something with the material I'll have leftover from the train as a keepsake. It will probably be roughly 2' x 3' or so. It's chiffon with a layer of lace on top that has embroidered, beaded flowers along the hem and scattered throughout the fabric-- pictures: http://tinypic.com/r/es2h5z/6 and http://tinypic.com/r/v8iow8/6

What are some ideas of what to do with this material? Ideas/suggestions so far: a pillow, a purse/bag, a little cape/shawl. I'm not terribly excited by any of these, so I turn to the brilliant and creative minds of AskMe for inspiration!

What kind of dress is this?

Please help me identify this dress style. Dear folks of metafilter, I need fashion advice. I'm getting married in October and so far, I haven't picked a dress. (I only know what I don't want: traditional, white, pouffy, princess-y.)
While looking for bouquet ideas, I came across this which looks like it might work on me. However, the linked website does not provide more information about the dress and a tineye search didn't help either. And since I am completely ignorant about most fashion-related things, I don't even know how to call this style and fabric.
Can you help me with a description? It would be extremely helpful in case I end up getting a dress made for me.

Bridal Lingerie, EEK!

What the heck am I supposed to wear with this low-back wedding dress? I am going to wear this dress at my July wedding. I have 34Ds up front. What are my bra options? I would love to get a little "push-up" effect with some cleavage, if at all possible.

I've searched Google, but all I get is ads/stores, no real advice for what works best. Anecdata appreciated!

How can I get a wedding dress custom-made in China?

How can I get a wedding dress custom-made in either Beijing or Quinhuangdao, China? I'll be there for a few weeks and I have a few questions about how this might be possible. I am traveling to China. I will be in Quinhuangdao for two weeks and Beijing for a week.

I'd like to have a wedding dress made while I am there and am looking for some advice on this, having never been there before or had things custom-made. Here are some questions I had, but any general or specific help you can give is greatly appreciated!

- Shall I bring pictures or do I need to bring a pattern as well?
- Does the pattern have to be my size? (I am looking at vintage patterns online and they are not all my size.)
- Do I purchase the material myself ahead of time or does the dressmaker do this there?
- Can anyone recommend a good dressmaker in either Beijing or Quinhuangdao?
- Does anyone know how long it takes to have a wedding dress made?
- Can it be done the week that I am in Beijing or do I need to get it done over the two weeks that I am in Quinhuangdao?
- Any other advice or things I haven't thought of?

Thank you!

Is this wedding dress for real?

Is the wedding dress in these photos actually like it appears in the photos, or a "trick of the light"? I don't consider myself a prude, but I'd like to think this lady doesn't know what is going on with her dress, or does she and that is entirely the point?

It doesn't appear to have any shocking effect on any of the other attendees, so perhaps it is just one of those cases where the photo is capturing something you wouldn't see as easily in person?

However, maybe it is all just a staged photo shoot by the photographer as some of the later pages, particularly the B&W photos look like the bride and groom were told "do this, do that"..etc?

If this is a wedding dress one can purchase, where would one do so? Other than the sheerness of it, I rather like it..Google-fu no help.

Cheers

Be my Tim Gunn?

I'm clueless when it comes to fancy fashion. How should I accessorize my wedding dress? I don't know what sort of jewelry to wear, or how to do my hair. Or shoes? I have to wear shoes right? I'm not fashion-inclined myself, but I want to look pretty and timelessly modern and not too made up but still made up and effortless with just a little bit of effort.

The dress itself is so outside anything that I've ever owned before that I'm not sure how to style the rest of everything.

We are planning an outdoor ceremony in Las Vegas, erring on the casual side of things.

If it matters, and it probably matters- I have brown hair, brown eyes, black-rimmed glasses(do people who wear glasses wear them on their wedding day, usually?), and I'm pretty chunky.

My budget is slim, but I'm willing to splurge if it's an item I can use more than this one day.

Help my fiancee not get scammed when buying her wedding dress! My fiancee has chosen a very beautiful dress (which I haven't seen yet, as are the rules), but it's out of our price range. We had talked about going with an online retailer for less money, but we're worried about getting scammed. She had found annbridalgown.com (not Ann's Bridal) for close to half off. Is it safe to buy from this site? If not, have you found a reliable online discount wedding dress?

Wedding dress alterations in Vancouver?

Vancouver Filter: Does anyone know of a good dressmaker/seamstress who is experienced with altering wedding dresses, is not too expensive, and can work FAST? Also, are there any Mefite dressmakers or seamstresses anywhere who could give me an idea of how much these alterations should cost? After a number of wedding dress debacles, I've pinned my last hopes on a dress that should be arriving any day now by mail.

It is the White House Black Market Audrey Bridal Gown. As you can see, it is silk taffeta in a mermaid style. The dress zips up one side with small working buttons that do up over the zipper.

I am praying that it will fit as is, and that I will only need to have it hemmed. But there is a good chance that I will need it taken in around the hips.

So my questions are:

1) Can anyone recommend a skilled and reliable dressmaker or seamstress in the Vancouver area, who is experienced with bridal gowns, and who could do these alterations in less than a week?

2) How much might be taken in at the hips before the zipper and buttons will have to be taken out and moved?

3) How much is it to have a relatively simple wedding dress hemmed?

4) Is there anything else I should know? Am I screwed?

Ok to Dry Clean? If so, Phoenix Specialty Dry Cleaners?

Dry cleaning a 60 year old wedding dress and 65 year old Navy uniform - OK to do? In two weeks, we're having a huge party for my Grandparents 60th wedding anniversary and their 80th birthdays. We'd like to display my grandma's wedding dress and my grandpa's Navy uniform (wool), but I'd like to clean them first. They're actually in great shape, considering their age. The dress has obviously yellowed, but the material, a heavy satin, is in good shape. The Navy uniform has a few moth holes in it and smells faintly, but OK otherwise. So, my question is this - Would it be safe to dry clean them? I'm thinking that if it's OK to dry clean them, I should probably take them someplace that specializes in cleaning vintage or delicate items. I'm not sure where that would be though. I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Thoughts or suggestions?

What should I do with my wedding dress?

What am I supposed to do with my wedding dress? We were married two years ago, and I had a beautiful wedding dress that has since been sitting in a closet (professionally cleaned, in the appropriate box). Obviously, it's not something I can wear to any other occasion. Even if we were to renew our vows in the future I'm not sure I'll fit in it by then (I'm not sure I'd fit in it now). We don't have any female relatives anywhere close to a marriageable age, and it's a really small dress so it's unlikely they'd fit into it either when they grow up. We're adopting a boy and there's no chance of surprise pregnancies.

I'm a very practical sort, so I brought up selling it, and my husband was rather apoplectic, though he didn't have any suggestions on what to do with it. My mother bought the dress for me and would probably be upset if I got rid of it, although she'd eventually get over it. I have the feeling she's still hoping for a granddaughter because she mentioned keeping it "just in case." Her other suggestion had something to do with tailoring it into a baptism gown or something else Christian-baby-related, I can't remember, but I'm not Christian (which she knows, but whatever, that's another question).

So what do I do with it? If I sell it, will I regret it someday? (Note: I have not even opened the box in two years.)

If you have direct experience with said dressmaker, fantastic. If you have pictures of said dressmaker's work, even better.
The where, the what and the how of getting hitched in Vegas, when you have friends coming from overseas.

(Several questions in one. Sorry.) We're getting hitched in Vegas, and friends are traveling from overseas. Help us plan out some basic wedding stuff (like location, wedding bands, etc.), as well as how to make our friends' stay enjoyable. Okay, so this one might be a doozy.

The Australian and I are getting hitched in Vegas, then going to live in the Summerlin area. A few of our friends from various places overseas are going to come to the wedding, which means a lot to us. We're trying to make things very accommodating for those traveling far, and we're looking for some information regarding that, as well as just basic wedding ideas.

Okay, to the nitty-gritty...

1. Where's a good, non-chapel place to get married in October? Bonus points for somewhere pretty and outdoors.
We looked through the plethora of previous questions like this, but most of them resulted in chapel answers for obvious Vegas reasons. We aren't religious, though, and we don't want to have the wedding in a chapel. Our group will be small. 15-25, I imagine.

2. I need a wedding dress lulz.
I don't believe in spending an arm and a leg on something that's only going to be used once. Pretty and simple and appropriate for the October weather. I'm happy to look into fairly unknown designers. I wanted this dress, but I narrowly missed out on it. I may yet get her to design something for me, but I am open to suggestions.

3. Where's a good place--online or off--to get wedding bands?

4. Where should we have an after-wedding dinner?
Saw a similar question on MeFi, but the answers were a bit too casual for us, mainly because part of my family is prudish, fundamentalist Christians, so I'm already pushing the envelope with a Vegas wedding here. Doesn't have to be hugely expensive or anything, just no slot machines by the table or barely-contained ta tas coming to take your order.

5. It's a long way off yet, but anyone know of entertaining things to do or events that will be going on in the weeks surrounding the 28th of October, 2009?
We have a few friends flying to us from Norway, as well as Australia. Big and expensive trip, clearly. We want to make sure they have more than just us to see, so ideas of where they could go with us would be great. :) Any big conventions or events would be welcome. Most of us are geeks and artists.

Thanks, guys!

Tea length, retro, rockabilly dresses for my wedding that aren't white. Know a great resource? I'm getting married February 29th (leap day!) and am looking for a dress that's pink, blue or green with a tea length rockabilly or retro style. What are you favorite vintage retro style dress sites? Petticoats would be fun too.

And has anyone seen that Helen Bonham Carter pink dress anywhere?
Need recommendations for places to try on wedding dresses this weekend in NYC. One of my friends is coming to NYC this weekend and wants to go shopping. I just got engaged and she thought it would be a fun/girly adventure to go wedding dress shopping. I'm looking for recommendations of places to go try on some dresses and maybe have a little champagne and fun in the NYC area. I just moved here and don't have any idea which places are good/bad and haven't started doing any real wedding research yet either. There are like 40 listings on TheKnot/WeddingChannel so I would prefer to get recommendations from locals/trusted MeFites. I won't be buying, but just trying on to get a feel for what looks good, as mentioned in this thread. There are a few other considerations that may impact this, please lend me your advice.

- We haven't started planning yet. That means I don't know the season, the location (beach, house of worship, etc), or even the budget. Does that render this useless?
- Am I supposed to do this with a certain person/people? She won't be the maid of honor - is this something I'm supposed to do with my mom, my fiance's mom, or my maid of honor etc? Will I offend anyone if we go? She will probably be a bridesmaid if that matters.
- Is there enough time to get an appointment for Saturday/Sunday? How does this work?

I'd love to hear store recommendations even if we don't go this weekend, since I obviously will be going at some point. We're subway-bound and would prefer Manhattan but are willing to go to other boroughs if there's a place worth visiting.

Thanks!

Is there anywhere in the Inland Empire area or in Los Angeles that buys secondhand wedding dresses? I have a wedding dress that has never been worn (just tried on) that I'd like to sell/get rid of before I move in two weeks. Are there any shops that buy secondhand wedding dresses in the Inland Empire area or in the Los Angeles area? I live in Riverside, if that helps.

Help me thank my co-worker!

How do you thank someone who gave you their wedding dress that you don't know very well? I'm getting married soon, and my co-worker gave me her wedding dress and shoes. I didn't even ask, she offered it up. (Most people I tell seem very shocked that she did that, so I'm guessing it's a big deal) I tried on the dress and shoes and they fit perfect so I told her that I'd love to keep them. She was more than happy to do it. It wasn't an expensive wedding dress for her. (she told me it cost her $50 bucks with alterations), but I want to make sure she realizes that I really appreciate it. I don't know her very well, nor do I know the etiquette for receiving someone's wedding dress as gift. Please give me an idea of how to show her that I'm grateful for what she just gave me.
