Book promo web sites

Two questions about sites for individual books: What are some great examples of book sites (i.e. sites that promote and have info on a specific book that has been published recently)? And: What do you look for in such a site (i.e. excerpts? message board?)

Illustrator's portfolio website with great flash work?

This is a long shot: I'm looking for a digital illustrator's portfolio website that I saw previewed on a portal a while ago. His/Her work was soft edged, used lots of color and almost watercolor-type brushes (digital). The site was done in flash and had amazing "watery ripple" transitions in between sections, almost like a dream sequence on tv shows. I also remember you could pickup a mock brush and play with it as well.

With the recent decision by Kottke.org to be reader supported, I'm curious to see how you value your daily reads?

With the recent decision by kottke.org to be solely reader-supported, I'm curious to see how you value your reads. Would you be willing to pay $30 a year for Metafilter? More? Less? How about for some up-and-coming web magazines that operate on a daily basis, say The Morning News, The Black Table, etc.? And how much for up-to-the-second pro blogs in the Gawker empire where advertising is used? Gawker? Gizmodo? Wonkette, etc? How much for Boing Boing were it to be ad free? How much for Fark? How much for the individuals' blogs you frequent? And for some Kottke.org fans who don't see $30 as a micropayment, how much would you be willing to pay for a year of his content? Curious to see what range of dollar-value folks assign to their daily reads that are currently free to access. Please name and value other sites of your choosing.

What is your favourite online music review site?

What is your favourite online music review site. I am looking for a good site that has comprehensive reviews of new releases from all genres. I know of sites such as Pitchfork, but they are all too genre-specific. I want something like Pitchfork which will also cover the new releases in world music, Jazz, soul, etc

How can I help my friend fix his website?

My friend has a popular website that has a lot of technical problems. Frequent downtime, sub-standard performance, inconsistent feature implementation, and large numbers of bugs. The software is all custom-written, and clearly needs a complete re-write. He needs help but won't accept it. What can I do?

Where to find Martin Luther King information and speeches?

ihaveadream.com is a sleazy search engine. mlk.com seems to be a German concert hall conglomerate. martinlutherking.com redirects to "clubpink.com" (er, I assume NSFW). thekingcenter.com cannot be found. Ah.... here it is. No, wait, that's all about his kinky sex parties and plagiarism.

Scholarly-but-accessible reference about Chinese history and culture.

SinoFilter: I'm looking for a scholarly-but-accessible book (or books) about Chinese history and culture. (Web site recommendations also welcome.) Is there a secret place on the internet like alibris.com for books where one can go find relatively obscure classical recordings?

Jacob ter Veldhuis' String Quartets, as far as I can tell, have been recorded only once. That label doesn't seem to have any current contact information. I'd like to get my hands on this, and tried a bunch of the local options here in San Francisco, including Amoeba. Is there a secret place on the internet like alibris.com for books where one can go find relatively obscure Dutch string quartets?

Best of FWDs

Wacky commercials (car hood whacking pigeon). Altered commercials (trunk monkey). Weird video clips (dog on skateboard, star wars boy). Cute mashups. Is there a single site that catalogs and warehouses these short masterpieces of folk video art? Sort of a "Best of" all the stuff that is being forwarded? Surely someone is collecting these!

HTML issues

HTML crisis: I use relative URLS on my blog because pages archive in different files- for example, a tag for a JPEG would be /images/image.jpg inside image tags. Because I use that first slash to make the relative URL work, all image tags are broken when you type or link to my site without a "www" in the url. In other words, "www.mysite.com" shows all the images fine, but "mysite.com" loads the site with little red x's everywhere. Solution? [more inside]

Websites with lists/reviews of educational books, videos, software for children ages 5-18?

Librarianfilter: My girlfriend is "wondering if anyone could recommend good websites containing lists/reviews for educational books/videos/software for children (ages 5 up through high school)? I recently acquired the responsibility of selecting materials (I'm a librarian) for our University's Educational Resource Center and don't have an education background so I'm new to this. I know about the Parent's Choice Foundation. I was wondering if there is something similar for librarians/educators? I get tons of catalogs but want lists/reviews, preferably online. Thanks!"
