MetaFilter is one of my main inputs. I get a lot of news and thinking about the world here. The problem is that it can make me feel terrible about everything, which is already kind of my baseline. Friends and family often express concern when I have been reading MeFi a lot. I am curious what sites you read that have similar properties, but are not as heavy and challenging, so that I can balance my consumption of MetaFilter and MetaFilter-like things. [more inside]
As a freelance writer/editor, I want to set up a website for several years of clips and a short bio. I want something that is going to be around for a while, so I'm leaning toward Wordpress or Squarespace (can write off cost as a business expense) rather than a more specialized site. I found some previous questions about this but they were from 2006/2010. Good examples of individual freelancers' sites are welcome too.
I'm an artist and I haven't updated my web site in about 7 years. I have a lot of content and I want to make sure it's easy to access and understand, and compliant with modern web standards. Is there anything I absolutely positively MUST do/not do? [more inside]

I stumbled my way into an associate editor position a year ago with no previous media experience, and have now been promoted to managing editor at the site. I'm successfully doing the job, but I constantly run into places where I wish I knew how "proper" newsrooms handled things. How do I learn? [more inside]
I'm building a website for my wife, who's written a half dozen children's books and is currently working to get them published. I've searched the web and looked at sites like Judy Bloom, Beverly Cleary, and currently reviewing this list of websites on pinterest. I'm hoping to get a list of things the hive mind thinks a children's author website should contain, outside of the obvious list like a page for the books, blog/news, and about the author.
I help manage a website for an international audience; we strive to be inclusive. We offer several different language versions; our translations are done by volunteers. Generally we add languages based on whether we have volunteers to translate. We have been offering European Portuguese for a while. Now a new volunteer has shown up, asking to be invited to the project; s/he is offering to volunteer for a translation to Brazilian Portuguese, which we currently do not offer. [more inside]

There is a domain that would be nice to have, but it has been registered for a very long time. I just recently decided to check on it, and it seems to be expiring. The site now shows a GoDaddy landing page that says it expired around a month ago. So, would it be advantageous to use their auction site, since they seem to currently have some control over the domain? [more inside]
Helping friends set up their small business website. I am not a web designer/developer, just fine with tweaking, dependable and honest--unlike their last web person. They don't need a lot of fancy stuff, but I would like to move them off of google sites and get them something 1)more professional 2) still easily updatable. They are hosted on godaddy with redirects now, which is wasteful. The godaddy webbuilder software does not impress so far. [more inside]
How important is having a .com suffix to the perceived legitimacy of a website? How does it affect traffic/success, etc? Does holding onto .com as the ideal make sense in this world of domain squatters? Can we make a list of good and bad choices?
Has anyone used it or does anyone know anything about its functionality? [more inside]

Long shot question: I am trying to remember a news/interesting stuff website. The content has pictures, linked essays, sometimes both. The essays are along the lines of Longform.org. The design is yellow and black ... of this, I am sure. The "about" states that it is curated by one woman, please donate. I think the logo has a brain in it, but don't let that throw you off.

Metafilter, can you help me remember the name of this website/startup that is in the back of my mind that I saw about 6 months ago and now cannot find? The site was a wiki style site that took a TV series or book and/or movie and extracted all the other books and music and films that were referenced in it. The site gave you summaries of these references and itunes and youtube links so that you could immerse yourself in the "universe" of a particular show/book. So kind of a similar idea to the madmen unbuttoned blog but more like a wiki. I have it in mind that this was a startup of some kind that was just starting out and thought that it was called little monsters or little devils or green monsters or something along those lines. (but trying everything I could think of along those lines turned up nothing so that may be a red herring!) I've been continually amazed by the power of the metafilter hive mind to solve this kind of query in the past, so thought I would give it a shot. Thanks.

I've been inspired by fellow mefite gomichild's site . I want to put together some of my photos for a site but don't know where to begin. I'm not confident with my design skills, and I wonder if I have any photos that are really good enough. I usually just post photos/snapshots on flickr for friends but I have had people contact me wanting to use my photos- so maybe they aren't so bad...Any suggestions for how to start? Anyone out there want to give me a (paid) hand putting a page together? You can see some of the photos at my flickr site(lots of snapshots here) or at JPG. I could put a few hours a day into a project. Right now I am oozing lack of confidence....
