I've had an idea for a product review site and am trying to discern whether product photographs can be legally reproduced on the website, from where fair-use photographs should be obtained and how, if at all, they should be attributed. [more inside]
Hoping to find at least one ostensibly liberal news website that has not yet collapsed into a pit of Buzzfeed-ification or gossip column nonsense masquerading as current events. I don't want to read about the latest offensive off-the-cuff remark made by some random state representative or Joe the Plumber or Sarah Palin or any other totally irrelevant GOP-friendly media personality. I only want to read in-depth stories about U.S. politics with a liberal bent: candidates, issue positions, polls, all that fun stuff. Can you help? [more inside]
I would like to create a web page where people can sign a sort of petition. It needs to be on my own web host, so third-party websites are not an option. [more inside]
I remember recently reading a website that highlighted smaller/lesser-known American cities and talked about why they were great places to live, as an alternative to trendy cities like Austin, Asheville, etc. The article I remember reading was about a town in Texas that had beautiful architecture, complete with lots of photos. I thought it was called something like "you should live here" or "you should move here", but those aren't turning up any Google hits. Does anyone know what this might have been?
I would like to change my homepage to a simple clean site that offers different positive daily quotes or affirmations - geared more to success, positivity and general spirituality. I've searched Google and the ones I have found are either cluttered with ads or are more of a "healing" nature (like the one at Hay House - not exactly what I want.)
I have a Tumblr on which I post Carter family songs. Some of the songs are better than others. I'd like to be able to have a sidebar that orders the songs both alphabetically and chronologically, plus a sidebar that has a "top ten" or "top twenty," so reader-listeners who don't want to sift through three years of songs can just click on the best ones. How do I do this? [more inside]
According to this US government page -- this is the link for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). [more inside]
So I have a little website for my business. I made it using WordPress 3.3.1 and Thesis 1.8. Got hacked and website is ready for a refresh. I am ready to move to Wordpress 4 and thesis 2.1. Some complications inside. Help? [more inside]
I need to capture about 40 student-made websites at about 5 points over the course of the semester. The students are building their sites on Google sites (via Canvas by Instructure course management system). I know this wouldn't be a huge thing to program, and while I could probably hack my way through it...surely someone has got this figured out already, yes? [more inside]
My wife and I want to create a personalized website/blog/guidebook for our city. This would be probably something we can send to our friends or friends of friends when we visit. This would be much more personalized or We're looking for sites or software/templates (i.e wordpress?) that can help us build the site. I'm pretty savvy technically with websites. [more inside]
I'm talking about a start-up app that is like Instagram when it first started (in terms of server needs as well as the kind of professionals that are needed to make it happen). Are there any online resources that can help a layman with a budget explore the depths of such an ominous endeavor? [more inside]
I've recently been involved in working on a project that includes an assessment tool, essentially a questionnaire created in Moodle. The client is having difficulty seeing past the bleakness of the pages without in graphical content so I'm now looking for a Moodle/Web designer. How can I find someone to work with me on this? [more inside]
Do we need another database in addition to the CMS to accomplish this? Can you help a non-developer understand. Can you help me explain it properly? [more inside]
There's a municipal election coming up, and a friend of mine is hoping to develop a Web site that allows users to cycle through key questions (e.g. "Do you think the city should allow a casino to be built downtown?" "Do you support the closure of the Simpson History Museum?") and see the positions of various candidates, grouped by electoral district. Can you think of a Web site that does such a thing? Bonus points if it's created by a group that might be willing to share their infrastructure. [more inside]
Website designers, can you point me to code or resources that I can use to implement buttons that are supposed to dynamically display content within the web page? [more inside]
What is the best site, app, or program for kids' worksheets? Math, science, handwriting, grammar, etc. [more inside]
I remember discovering a site in, god, 2007 or 2008 I think, possible through Metafilter, that had a theme every month (I very much remember the theme 'Anarchy') and published a number of essays around that theme. Not essays by readers, essays by scholars. I think the essays somehow had to be written in reaction to each other. It was super interesting, but I lost track of it and now I don't know what it was called anymore, or even whether it still exists. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
My itty-bitty portfolio website traffic is almost all new visitors from Brazil. I don't have anything on my portfolio that would appeal to Brazilians. What is going on? Should I be worried? [more inside]
So I recently completed a project, and was sharing the news with people on Facebook - but Facebook blocked the link to my website because it was apparently on some spammy/malware blacklist. I did some investigation, and my site comes up clean on every security scan thing I tried, except McAfee SiteAdvisor. It seems likely that it's a false positive, possibly due to my shared hosting. If there's a legitimate security issue, though, I'd like to find out what it is so I can fix it - but I don't know how I can do that. [more inside]
I need a systematic way to track and show that sites are up to date, links checked, content updated or deleted. [more inside]
I need help narrowing options to convert my site to responsive for tablets/mobile. I've developed chemo brain and just can't concentrate and stick to it myself. I don't have enough money to pay for a good developer/designer right now, either. I also need to get it done as soon as possible. (A bit more inside...) [more inside]
I saw -- maybe here, maybe on the blue -- a link to a webpage with discussions of all sorts of future-science problems. I can't find it again. Help? [more inside]
I've built a website that combines all state constitutions in one place. I want to build another website that puts all state laws in one place. But state laws change much more often than state constitutions. And although states make their laws available online (usually in the form of revised statutes), their word count greatly exceeds the total word count of state constitution. It took six months to build the state constitutions website. [more inside]
I'm looking for platforms for professional writers to build their own websites--like 4ormat, just not as image-focused--and working examples of such. [more inside]
The videos need to work across all browsers and devices. I'm having a hard time finding good advice. Can you help?
I am planning a new website for my business. My web designer of many years does really stellar sites which Google seems to love. However, some of the Wordpress templates out there at the moment are superlatively great. The site is going to be purely a brochure / information website. So some advice please. Are custom-built websites old hat for the purposes of a brochure site or do hand-crafted websites (right-term?) still hold a lot of merit? (PS: the cost is not important. I am quite willing to pay the same for both types of architecture)
I'm looking for a CMS that is highly-customizable and relatively cheap. [more inside]
I am a newish member of a volunteer organization. Most of the members are older, and the Board is looking for ways to drive new membership. I think it is essential that the website be updated, in order for the organization to look more progressive, and in turn attract younger members. I feel that I could devote a few hours a week to this task. Difficulty: I don't have, nor have I ever had a website of my own, and don't know anything about maintaining one. [more inside]
If I want to start a blog or site, what are some good places to learn about how many page views, etc. lead to how much revenue? [more inside]
Someone (?) registered and account on Thumbtack with my e-mail address. Any other avenues to pursue? [more inside]
Websites to purchase and have wedding gift delivered to Istanbul?... And what should I get her? [more inside]
I want to have a non-gmail/slightly more professional address for my freelance work, so I'm planning to buy a domain. What companies would you recommend for a) buying a domain and b) hosting the site? I just want to have one page with a background photo, a line of text, and a link to my email. Is Squarespace worth it, since I don't know how to build the page myself?
I have seen fashion/clothing sites where on the product page the brand has dress/pant/shirt etc. options. There is a blank image of the pants, etc. Below the image is a choice of colors or design. When you scroll over a color you then see what the color will look like on the pants. Does anyone know any brands that have this on there sites? I have seen them in the past yet none of them are coming to mind. I am building a website right now and would like to show this to my designer.
I want to sell what I write as a 'packaged' article or essay. Best spots to do this? [more inside]
Hi folks, I have a video uploaded on Youtube that I'd like to add an annotation to - a link to a Google Map that I created. But for some reason Youtube only allows links to a few select destinations (e.g. another video, a personal webpage). Is there anyway I can get around this?
I know about the sites that show who follows back and who doesn't, Etc. I am trying to find a way to know what the last tweet before people unfollowed was - like a way for me to try to figure what type of things my audience doesn't like (offensive? Boring?) Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I am curious about the process of scaling a website from a small, shared hosting site all the way up to "one of the biggest 10 sites on the Internet" scale. I've heard terms like "dedicated hosting," "sharding the database" etc., but I'm sure there's a lot more that I haven't heard about. What changes on the backend through this process, and is there a typical order that those changes occur?
I stumbled across a site a few weeks ago which would put up an image of some sort and ask you to write what question came to your mind. I think the point was just to collect the questions and look at them (but it asked you to make an account before you could see more than a few of the other peoples' questions, and I never did that). I've forgotten where I found it. Does anyone know what site this was? [more inside]
I'm a professional (part-time) photographer--I know next to nothing about web hosting/design/whatever. I want to switch from having a portfolio/sales website through Zenfolio (with a custom domain name hosted by Dreamhost) to having a website totally hosted by Dreamhost (with Shootproof for portfolio/sales). How can I mess around with setting up a new site (probably a Wordpress site with one-click install on Dreamhost)--I need this to be easy) without breaking my old site before I'm ready to use a new one? I'd like to know which cases are in court, when, and where. [more inside]

I'm looking for blogs that are about the life of the person writing them instead of just a single topic. Like, maybe an author keeps a blog and writes about cooking and being an author and trips to Mexico, or a reporter in Germany talks about being a reporter but also their deep love of jazz. Something that's about the many things in a person's life. Caveat: Nothing too focused on a family, please - just individuals. Bonus points for people with super-interesting lives or for people in their twenties.
I'm trying to access a website for an online game that's been recommended to me, and all I get is a white screen with broken images and broken links. I've tried from two computers and a mobile device, Chrome and Safari, I've cleared my caches and reset my browsers, and yes - I have tried turning off and on again. [more inside]
I'm in a position where I manage a local non-profit's website. As I take an opportunity to transition out of the role, I am sad to see my track record. Can I become a better webmaster, undertake a fantastic transition AND learn something all in the next few months? [more inside]
I am starting a music/lifestyle blog. I want to be able to post songs from the artists on the blog (with their permission of course) on the blog's Facebook page to get the word of mouth going. I don't have enough web expertise to code from scratch, but if I had a player I could customize, I can modify the look and feel to my the blog. Any ideas on a Flash based mp3 player I could use? It could work on other platforms but it definitely has to work on Facebook too. PS. thinking of something along the lines of what soundcloud uses www.facebook.com/soundcloud
I am working on a website which is going to be a community and blog. A friend of mine shares a similar interest, and I want to invite him to partner up because I think it will be more fun and easier to get up and running with a partner. I'd like to propose we officially create a partnership with a contact and all that so he has incentive. But I've done or/am doing the lion's share of the work, at least initially. What's a fair deal? I'm looking to start backpacking/rough camping this year, and I've had a hard time picking a guide. Can you recommend a book (preferred) or a website for this sort of thing? I've done some not-so-rough campground camping before, but it was alway drive-in camping. We'd love to start off with over nighters and work our way up from there. We don't know what type of pack/tent/gear to get at all. Bonus: guides for the tri-state (Philadelphia-New Jersey-Delaware) area camping/packing would be nice, too. Thanks!
I taught myself how to build a wordpress website for our small business a few years ago and since our current platform (Platform Pro) is now defunct, I need to switch to a different platform and get all my plugins and wordpress up-do-date. What is the smartest way to do this? [more inside]
I've got an idea for a website I'd like to do - I want to create, together with my website visitors, a sort of "choose your own adventure." I would set up the story up to a point, then the people who visit the site could come up with ideas as to which way the story would go. The top three up voted choices become the next part of the adventure, which I then flesh out. I would update once a week; this just sprung into my head, and it sounds like a cool creative project for me to do. I also have a talented artist that would like to contribute. Unfortunately, I have no experience in web site design, and am lost as how to begin. Please help me learn how to design a website so I could set up this kind of project! Details inside. [more inside]
In 2014,what options are now available to an entrepreneur with very limited tech knowledge? Is it now more feasible to build a (Minimum Viable Product) site using more turnkey methods, like site builders, pre-made themes, etc., than it used to be? I realize that really getting something tuned to where I ultimately want it will require tech help. But to get the ideas roughed in and functioning, so as to attract investment and help, what can a non-programmer do/use nowadays?
