I have mostly completed a website design for a small company - logo, colors, info architecture - but the visual effect of all the elements together isn't.. quite.. "there" yet. How would I go about finding a Web designer who could improve the design "the rest of the way"?

I have recently taken charge of
an old webpage that is a bit out of date on a university server. I am primarily familiar with Google Sites and Wordpress, where there's a CMS editor, but here it's just an ftp site with raw index files that require Spry to run. What do I need to edit it? Would it be relatively easy to create a redirect to a site that I control running a CMS I understand? How do I keep that from ruining all the old backlinks?

I'm trying to find an example website to send to my web developer of "floating" text. I'm sure there's a better name for what I'm trying to describe. Basically, I literally mean that different lines of a short paragraph are "floating" in different directions and different fonts over an image.
Does this make sense? Can someone think of better words to describe? Best yet, can someone link to a site that has similar text?
Thank you in advance!

Some time in the last year (maybe two years, at most) I saw a simple, modern site that recommended a single device in multiple categories of hardware (monitors, laptops, vacuum cleaners, electric toothbrushes, etc., etc.). The home page was a grid of the categories, and then you clicked through to ~2 paragraphs explaining why the particular device was so great. I think in some categories there were "budget" and "money is no object" recommendations, but the basic idea was to do your thinking for you, and tell you exactly what model to buy. Does anyone know what site I'm thinking of?

Today, one page of our website experienced a 1 h surge: about 600 unique visitors landed there after doing a highly specific search on Google. The question was relevant and our (non-commercial) site ranks 1rst for this question, so while unusual this can be explained except for one thing: all those visitors were using the Opera Mini browser on a mobile device connected to a service provider that Google Analytics calls "Opera software asa". Also, the surge peaked at 11 am GMT+1 and then was basically over (no tail). Any idea of what happened?

A month or two ago I saw a video someone had made of an exchange they had with a customer at work. The video had two cutesy CGI dog-like animals talking with very basic gestures and motions. It googled the watermark in the corner of the video and it took me to the site the guy had used to create the video. The name was four letters long but it wasn't a real word. There were multiple themes or scenes you could select, enter dialog, etc. Most of the themes were very cutesy- animals, flowers, etc. The speech seemed to be rendered by some typical voice-to-text software as it was very flat with no inflection. Overall it was a pretty easy to use website.

I have been tasked with finding a web solution for a volunteer group associated with a university.
There are already pages on one of the departments' websites, however, it will be months before any changes can be made to that as it's under the rule of a CMS which is about to be migrated and to which we won't be able to really do anything until November. We want all the usual stuff like a blog and a Twitter widget and latest news and yadda yadda, but anything we add - and possibly anything we remove - would have to wait till November if we use the existing hosting arrangement. This is why I want to stick up another web infrastructure for us somewhere else, probably not hosted by the university.

The website is a collection of images, and one images leads to the next, in an associative way. Like, one composition suggests the next image, like a group of colorful balloons suggests a pile of colorful trash which then suggests a crowd of people, etc., and it seems to go on endlessly.

A website that uses Buffetology to assess the "real" value of stocks
Years ago, I remember stumbling across a website that took the methods of a book called Buffettology (written by an ex-member of the Buffett family) and allowed you to evaluate any type of stock using the techniques of that book. Basically, you input a stock and it did a bunch of calculations according to the formulas provided in that book and gave you a list of bunch values. I am still looking for this website and wondering if anybody has ever come across it. To give an example, you type in a stock's name and some information about the stock and it would give you an output in csv format about all the values that stock might have. Or you could have downloaded it to EXCEL. If you don't know of this particular website, do you know of anything similar? Thanks

I am advising on the creation of a web portal for the sales of homes. One of the concerns is that buyer and seller will find each other via the site but then carry out the purchase on their own, cutting the site out of a potential "intermediary" fee.
Does anybody have any ideas / experience on how this can be addressed?

I recall being directed to a site/blog which had short anecdotes, submitted by users, about bad experiences with gynos/doctors/nurses, often focussing on hospitals/childbirth etc. A similar interface to fmylife.com
On a specific day of the week they showcased the opposite, good experiences and health professionals who went out of their way to provide care.
Does anyone know which site this is? I think I may have even found it through AskMeFi, but a search turned up nothing. Thanks.

I'm creating a simple website. It will be a single page with a photograph and a block of text. I will need to update it with a new photograph and a new block of text at a certain time each day, say midnight. I anticipate being able to do this manually most of the time, but would like an option to somehow pre-load at least one photo and text block and have the site automatically update if needed. It would also be great to have multiple days' worth ready to go without human intervention.

Sometimes, I am a front-end web developer. Frequently, I meet new people at work who want to turn really complicated Excel documents into dazzlingly interactive web applications.
Besides
Excel's "Save to Web App" or "Save to SharePoint" features, such people ask if I can tap into an industry to support this -- perhaps scads of agencies and web-based or downloadable tools that make "websites" or at least customizable, interactive reports from Excel spreadsheets, data, and calculations.
I'm yet to find this an abundance of examples of this. Are there? If so, what do you call them?
