My household has suddenly found itself need of a new family-scale web-based planning/organization tool. This is tougher than it might sound as we (well, I) have some pretty twitchy technical requirements, thanks to my work's firewall rules. [more inside]

I feel the need to move my computer data to the cloud, but I am... afraid. This has been troubling me for months now. I've bothered friends and family, but most of them have already switched and have no fear. But I'm an old computer dude and I've always stored my stuff within arms reach. I'm lured by Google features but, but... I guess it comes down to trust. This is emotional people! If I pay google monthly (for more space) does that imply any durability? Or am I way outta line and being too virtually materialistic?

Can anyone provide me with information about the earliest forms of RPC over http?
I'm looking for predecessor systems or papers that describe the desire or implementation of moving RPC (or any other remote object access) to the Web, or even to the Internet generally. I don't necessarily need text-based implementations like XML-RPC, but that seems like one area of possible information.

Anyone know of a site that measures the popularity of a site - not just hits, or subscribers, but if a web service is growing (be it subscriber base, popularity) and if it's considered the most authoritative, etc. For example, say I'm trying to compare using Technorati versus Feedster - where would I go to compare these two sites, their features, their popularity? I'm looking for access to product lists of CDs, books, movies and any other entertainment type stuff for a web application I'm working on. I'm already aware of Amazon Web Services and the Library of Congress Z39.50 Gateway. Anyone know of any other places to get data on, say, movies in theater or TV shows or less mainstream CDs, etc?

Web services - is there a server that supports both REST and SOAP protocols? I'd like to write the service code (in Java) once and then support both, as simply as possible. Simplicity is more important that features and throughput. Or should I just focus on one (which)? Thanks. [more inside]

Looking to do some discussion forums on a commercial web site. I know there's a bunch of code in a can for this kind of stuff. Most of the one's I've seen are looking to be run on MySQL and PHP. Most of our site is on Microsoft SQL Server and IIS/ASP. Does anybody have thoughts or suggestions with respect to the best package for that environment? [more inside]
