I have an older iMac running 10.3. I need to learn a basic web design program. I have a Dreamweaver tutorial book with a demo but cannot anytime soon afford that program. I may have access to a laptop with windows. Anybody have any suggestions on web design programs that are inexepensive? I am already adept in Photoshop and Illustrator. I appreciate your input

Some
web pages with
a lot of
text seem to load slowly, even over broadband, and especially when compared to the bandwidth streaming video uses, I don't understand why. Can somebody explain? (Warning: Those links load slowly.)

I am trying to design a banner for a public library web site. I find that all the banners I design are too retro-looking. Kind of 1950s, Alvin Lustig or Saul Bass inspired. Cute, but they don't seem to represent a forward-thinking, technology-oriented library. I am looking for examples of banners that might inspire me, and I am hoping you all might have some suggestions. Also, any elements you think I should try to include or try to avoid. This banner will be seen by tens of thousands of people, and will be the "face" of the library online. Links to examples of what you think works and why it works would be much appreciated. I had no idea that I would have such a hard time with this; I just don't seem to get 2007 design! Thanks.

Is there a windows-equivalent to iWeb? I work at an elementary school. I have teachers who want the ease and bells & whistles of iWeb, but we’re all windows here. I don’t care how bloaty the code gets; I just want teachers to look and say “ooooh, pretty!”

I didn't design
this page, but I'm now maintaining it. Why does the shaded gray box on the right appear halfway down the page in IE, but right where it should in Firefox? I think it was designed in Dreamweaver, but I'm not sure. How can I fix this?

I'm asking for advice on which web applications you would recommend to a person wanting to start their own web-page. I am new to web-page design and want to get up and running on a simple web-page relatively quickly and easily. I'm not afraid of trying to create some of my own design as I know a little HTML and the bare basics of web design - CSS etc -- it's just I haven't used it in real life yet. My e-mail provider (runbox) provides free web-site hosting and I needed to buy a domain name which I did. I want to start my own web page for personal use on items such as pictures, surveys or polls, blogs, discussions etc. My domain provider uses the following applications and I'm asking for advice on which applications a new user, relatively green on the tech side, should use. See below for the list of supplied web applications (if that is what you call them).

Is there a script (perl or php, no MySQL because I don't understand it and don't want to learn it) that password-protects a webpage so that it can be viewed only by someone who logs in with a username and a password, and also logs that user, so that you can have a record (very important) of who's viewed the page? If so, where can I get me one?

I'm not in the technology business, so this may seem like a fairly simple-minded question. I've a client who claims their website receives a certain number of visitors (not hits, unique visitors) a month. Is there a way to validate this - a non-illegal/non-hacking way of counting what interest one website may generate without them knowing it? Perhaps a website like google or the like that provides this service?

I'm looking for a program that will catalog my music collection as a webpage. I'd like something that alphabetically lists artists, and each artist entry can be expanded to list songs. Preferably the program would work from an M3U playlist or based off my file structure (songs are in folders according to artist).
