Skills-based volunteer web designers: tell me what it's like!

Have you done web design or development as part of a local "skills-based volunteer" or "pro-bono consultant" program? What were the projects like? Was it challenging? Are folks generally trying to move the technology and design forward, or get more life out of decrepit sites? [more inside]

Career change, grad school, debt, and you. I mean me.

I am a web developer with decent abilities but a growing frustration with the work. I have identified an area that I would like to pursue - Human-Computer Interaction. I've been struggling with how to proceed with what seems like the inevitable next step in my working life and I'm hoping MeFi can be my surrogate mentor. I'd like to ask anon for employer-related reasons, which means more information than you may require inside. [more inside]

Should I sue for a $500 web-development bill?

Solutions for a web-based form that takes payment...?

Have to build a form for a web site that takes generic stuff (name, address, etc.) but also processes a payment, preferably through Paypal Pro. The site is hosted by Dreamhost and the CMS is Expression Engine. Paypal Pro's site is a little mind-boggling for an amateur like myself. Are there companies that will just do this aspect of the development (and quickly) or a site that has solutions given these variables? I don't mind paying, I just need it done fast.

Restricting access to directory... with conditions

How do I restrict access to a directory on my web site but still allow an audio streamer program to access the files? For instance, I want to put my mp3s in the audio directory but I want anyone going to mydomain.com/audio to not be able to download the tracks. The audio player being used is JW Player if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Head hurts. Insert own witty title here.

LessSuckyThanMeAtJoomlaFilter: I'm newish to Joomla and building a website that's going to have on its front page (amongst other things) a section highlighting three services offered, in three side-by-side boxes in the main column, each with a "more" link hopping via anchor link to a corresponding heading on a "Services" page listing all services offered. To more experienced developers than I, how would you achieve this? Three articles in a "position"? A ul in a single article (not really possible if I want to use h3s in each and remain w3c-compliant)? Something else? [more inside]

Super-configurable javascript calendar picker?

Does anyone know of a Javascript/DHTML date picker (or calendar widget, or whatever you want to call it) that allows you to configure it so that only specific date choices are available? Share your IT infrastructure, hosting and version control thoughts for web development firms?

I work for a small web development company. As we are growing, I have been tasked with looking at a few pieces of our business: - Version Control (Currently we don’t do it. We’re starting to use Subversion at my recommendation) - Development Environments (We don’t exactly have formalized dev/stage/production right now, more like just dev/production…) - Hosting (How we host our different clients varies… too much… we need a good solution) - Infrastructure (i.e. how we host our own email, how we back up our data) I already have some thoughts and recommendations, but they’re based on my personal experiences, so I thought I’d see what other experiences are out there and find out what other people/companies are doing… [more inside]

Disagreement with co-web developer about speed difference of height and width specified in image tags as opposed to in the css

I am having a disagreement with a co-web developer I'm working with. He's insisting that having image width and height specified for images in the image tags is going to make an enormous difference in how fast this database driven site will render, while I feel that having the height and width called in the css for these images is enough. The site is very fast. [more inside]

How to render image like in google picasaweb?

How to render image like in google picasaweb?: I'm developing a web page. If I use img tag to put image in the web page, while loading the page, image loads very slowly (especially large images). Also the upper part of image is loaded first and then the lower part, as page is downloaded from server. But in applications like google picasa, a very low quality version is rendered first, so that you see the whole image at once (even though its blurred), slowly as the page is downloaded, image becomes sharper. How can I implement this functionality in my web page? Can someone please point me to helpful resources regarding this?
