Should I knuckle down and learn to use Magento, or is there a friendlier option that will do everything I need?
I am building an commerce site for a small business that needs to serve both the general public and their wholesale clientele. I've got some experience with several Wordpress-based ecommerce solutions, but am I going to find them limiting in the long run?

I've been brought onboard by a startup company to fix up their social networking website, which was built for them in Joomla and is a complete glitch-filled mess, both front and back end. After upgrading to the latest Joomla version, the site has more or less broken (does not function at all at the front end). Should I attempt to patch up and rebuild this mess in Joomla, or start over with a better choice of CMS?

Howdy, We're in the early stages of developing an online directory site that will include online booking capabilities similar (if not exact) to something you might see on a vacation rental site. Due to my limited knowledge on the subject, I thought I might plead for some help answering a couple simple questions.

I'm setting up a website which must include a strong social component. Users will share and modify designs and there will be contests voted on by users, a forum, and a store. I would like this to be able to handle high volumes of traffic, and I'd like it to be built on a flexible platform. What platforms should I consider, and where should I look for developers?

Im looking for some advice and suggestions on the best way to structure a project.
My client has 4 products (SAS) and although they are related most people would only use one due to the specialist nature of each.
Currently only one of these products has a website and there is no main company website.
They are looking to introduce a main company website either incorporating each of the 4 products within it or having a separate company site and each product has its own separate site with the main company site acting as a knowledge base to establish them as an authority in field they work in.
Im wondering what the best approach would be from a usability point of view and an SEO points of view? I guess from an SEO point of view each product sitting on its own domain and being targeted to certain keyphrases might be more preferential than one site will all the content in?
Im wondering if anyone knows of any examples out there that handle this particularly well

I have been out of website coding the past seven years. I still have a webiste but it is coded in very simple HTML with little or no CSS. From what I remember back then CSS was not supported fully by all he browsers. Broadband internet was also not as widely used as it is today so I hesitated in using images for my site. Is there a book that will bring me up to date with the latest coding technologies (Ajax, HTML, CSS)?

Web development work in Sydney: where to go ... what to know?
I'm a web developer, and might be getting laid off from my corporate job in Sydney next year.
So, two questions really:
- What's the best way to find work? Which agencies are the best? Which websites?
- I have a bit of lead-time, and I should probably be thinking about brushing up on my skills: I've spent a lot of time working on idiosyncratic in-house CMS and maintenance tools which would make you splutter if you saw them. So ... Drupal? JSP? Front-end stuff like JQuery/AJAX? What are the technologies in demand?
More background on my situation inside.

Dumb question here, especially coming from a web developer ... But I use a Twitter widget on occasion on the front page of the site I work on. We'll be using it again Election night from about 4pm through to the wee morning hours.
The widget is the standard-variety Twitter-supplied widget (
http://twitter.com/widgets).
The problem is, this widget always seems to "die" at some point during its use. That is, it will display tweets just fine for an hour or two (maybe even three, if I'm lucky), then it stops displaying tweets altogether, showing just the styled box, completely devoid of tweets.
Search as I have, google-fu has failed me. Can't seem to come up with an explanation that seems reasonable to my supervisors. Any ideas?

Always desiring to experience living in Japan, I moved in the country from Canada almost a year ago on a working holiday visa, which will expire next month. My life here is stable so far, including a job at a company willing to sponsor me for a work visa. I want to live in Japan for a longer period, but the problem is I don't seem to meet the requirements for a visa. I am aware that getting married is the easiest way, but unfortunately, I do not have that possibility.
Is there anything I can do to stay and work in Japan longer?

Have to build a form for a web site that takes generic stuff (name, address, etc.) but also processes a payment, preferably through Paypal Pro. The site is hosted by Dreamhost and the CMS is Expression Engine. Paypal Pro's site is a little mind-boggling for an amateur like myself. Are there companies that will just do this aspect of the development (and quickly) or a site that has solutions given these variables? I don't mind paying, I just need it done fast.
