My small team is hiring a developer and a designer to build a website. What is the best way for us to communicate the features that the website needs to have? It is a medium-complexity website - more than a blog, less than Facebook. [more inside]

I created an online, open source academic journal website several years ago and it may be near the end of its first life. I'd love to get feedback on what folks here think might work best. I want to reinvent it and breathe new life into old content. Help me, MetaFilter, rebuild something that doesn't have to die into something new and beautiful! [more inside]

Im looking for some advice and suggestions on the best way to structure a project.
My client has 4 products (SAS) and although they are related most people would only use one due to the specialist nature of each.
Currently only one of these products has a website and there is no main company website.
They are looking to introduce a main company website either incorporating each of the 4 products within it or having a separate company site and each product has its own separate site with the main company site acting as a knowledge base to establish them as an authority in field they work in.
Im wondering what the best approach would be from a usability point of view and an SEO points of view? I guess from an SEO point of view each product sitting on its own domain and being targeted to certain keyphrases might be more preferential than one site will all the content in?
Im wondering if anyone knows of any examples out there that handle this particularly well

Always desiring to experience living in Japan, I moved in the country from Canada almost a year ago on a working holiday visa, which will expire next month. My life here is stable so far, including a job at a company willing to sponsor me for a work visa. I want to live in Japan for a longer period, but the problem is I don't seem to meet the requirements for a visa. I am aware that getting married is the easiest way, but unfortunately, I do not have that possibility.
Is there anything I can do to stay and work in Japan longer? [more inside]

I am a web developer with decent abilities but a growing frustration with the work. I have identified an area that I would like to pursue - Human-Computer Interaction.
I've been struggling with how to proceed with what seems like the inevitable next step in my working life and I'm hoping MeFi can be my surrogate mentor. I'd like to ask anon for employer-related reasons, which means more information than you may require inside. [more inside]

LessSuckyThanMeAtJoomlaFilter: I'm newish to Joomla and building a website that's going to have on its front page (amongst other things) a section highlighting three services offered, in three side-by-side boxes in the main column, each with a "more" link hopping via anchor link to a corresponding heading on a "Services" page listing all services offered. To more experienced developers than I, how would you achieve this? Three articles in a "position"? A ul in a single article (not really possible if I want to use h3s in each and remain w3c-compliant)? Something else? [more inside]

I've been charged with redoing our Label Website pretty much from scratch, both back-end and front-end (yes, its a self-link but its relevant). Because this site is about classical music, there is a HUGE amount of metadata that will need to be collected, parsed and displayed (think 3700 titles * 10 tracks * performer, composer, title, length, etc for each track).
Has anyone done or know of anyone who's done work on this scale on either the back-end side or the design side before that they might recommend? I have an RFP pretty much already mocked-up. I would've liked to have used someone like 37signals but it seems like they don't do work for others anymore.
