On our website, we've got a little one-field form where people can fill in their e-mail address and sign up for our mailing list. The form seems to now be the target of spammer-hacker bastards, and random people are complaining about being signed up for a list they've never heard of. What should we do, besides take down the form altogether? The only thing that comes to mind is a captcha (but that adds another step to what should be a one-step process). [more inside]

Who should I add to my del.icio.us network if I'm interested in web development? I currently have a few of my friends and some javascript gurus, but I'd like to add some more. Is there a website that lists developers and their del.icio.us usernames?

I need a way for users to edit a timeline online. It doesn't have to be elaborate; it just has to allow a user to add an event to a history timeline. I'm too swamped to build my own solution. We're running IIS with classic ASP. Ideas for getting this pulled off? [more inside]

I'd like to learn more about Cascading Stylesheets, but there are so many resources related to CSS - so I simply do not know where to begin. Sometimes there is too much, sometimes there isn't enough. Therefore I'd like to ask, which resources would you recommend as the most useful and ultimate web-sites related to CSS? [more inside]

A year or so ago, I happened across a single php file I could drop in a website directory which then enabled the browsing of image files in said directory. I have since forgotten its name. What is this application or any simple, light-weight image directory browser?

I'm a graphic designer for a non-profit who has been drafted into something of a web role. I'm comfortable with design, HTML, and CSS, but feel rather ill at ease with larger 'back-end' technologies. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for what technology I should learn, and the best book (or other method) by which I could do so. [more inside]

Let's say I wanted to create a simple web app to store my various usernames and passwords. The app and database would be hosted externally (by Dreamhost). I would use a secure connection for any HTTP stuff going back and forth, and I would encrypt all of the passwords before going into the db, and I can only extract and decrypt a password after entering a pass phrase that exists only in my brain. What would it take for someone else to get at my passwords? [more inside]

I need a new way of transforming XML with XSL. Till date I've used PHP's Sablotron, which I absolutely love and is simple to use, but my host keeps forgetting to enable and include it each time they recompile Apache, so I was wondering if someone here knows of a way to do the same with either Perl or JSP/Tomcat or even PHP as long as it is without Sablotron's xslt_create(). I know I'm being a bit of a hypertext pedant, but are there any grammatical rules for linktext? Any stylistic rules for linktext? Linktext is the stuff that goes in between <a> and </a>. I know to never use "click here" as linktext but I'm interested in other rules about syntax and style. (more inside)

Windows Explorer has an option to display all the image files in a folder in "filmstrip" mode, which looks like this. I want to create a similar method of display on a web page. I figure I'll have to (unfortunately) use frames to create the bottom gallery of thumbnails and have it scroll like that but I would rather not have to create a separate page for each full-size picture. I would rather the page displaying the picture be dynamic and just change the picture rather than refer the browser to a different file. I figure this could be done with some scripting language (PHP?) but I don't know much about that sort of thing. Can anyone help me out? [+]

I want to make my website more modular and easier to update. I have no CMS ability, and no interest in frames What I want is to have something like "index.html" look into some other text or HTML file and load up and display the information (Text, HTML, CSS divs, Links).
As an example I want to have one central text file that saves the banner and navigation buttons of the site so that I only have to update that one file to make site-wide changes.
To me this is somewhat like frames (but not passe) and like an array (I use one Java array to display images) but I want to display code etc. I haven't been able to tinker with it and make it work, and, though I'm asking for it, it doesn't seem to be on google. Anyone?

Is there a way to tint an entire web page a certain colour? As in, not actually altering the images and other content to be tinted that colour, just for the content to look that way when viewed on that page. It sounds to me like something that could be done with CSS but I'm really not sure. Google's results aren't turning up quite what I'm looking for, although maybe I just suck at finding the right words for this query.

I am developing a Flash-based website using Miniml's free fonts. I understand that the fonts should be placed at integer positions, but what happens when they are nested inside MCs which themselves are not integer-postitioned? Do I need to place all my (many) levels of MCs sans decimal points?

Does anyone here have experience with a bit of shopping cart software called MivaMerchant? I'm trying to integrate it into an existing website, but with mixed results, and I've been unable to find a quality, free support forum on the web (although I have read that they exist).
