I'm starting up a business that revolves around my artistic and digital editing skills, but I'm totally clueless about web design and programming.
I want something that looks fairly professional but in that kind of haphazard, artsy way. A lot of artists' online portfolios have a lot of white space and are very stripped down, almost with this kind of collage look. That's what I'm going for.
How do I find a designer? I can't spend more than a few hundred bucks because I'm still a poor student, but I want somebody talented who knows what they're doing.

Does adding symbol characters to your title meta tags hurt your SEO? Our company has a title format of "-- Our Web Site : A Page --" and since we're going through a redesign I was wondering if it might be a good time to drop that convention.

What is the best way to launch a new web site?
We are going to launch a new and improved web site in the coming weeks. Should we just delete the old web site and post the new OR should we place redirects on the old pages to the new home page?
I've heard that it's best not to just delete, but I wanted to get some feedback here.
Thanks to all.

1) Client insists on using Yahoo Store because they're comfortable with it and have a decent relationship with Yahoo. 2) Client's current Yahoo Store design firm is lethargic about any changes, even when they're responsible for breaking them in the first place. 3) Does the hive mind have any recommendations for a new design firm that can implement some (modest, mostly back-end for metatagging and on-page content updates) changes quickly?

[ Flash Filter ] Ok. So after sketching out my client's site
, they have informed me that they want the white cross (with the blue gradient) to basically fade, from the outside in to the center, and perhaps have a little sparkle and 'ding' noise as the animation completes. As far as I can come up with, flash is the only way this is going to happen. My question is, how am I going to make this work? [more inside]

I've been playing with a promising idea for a website for a while, and I feel I'm ready to get things moving. I've got a fairly clear idea of what I want, who would use it, and why it would take off. Income would be ad-generated, in an area where I believe prospects are good. The problem is, there's no out-of-the-box software that does what I need it to do, and programming the site is beyond my capabilities. [more inside]

I'm looking for a showcase/inspiration gallery of imageless (or at least minimal graphics) pure CSS web designs. Not necessarily "minimalist" design, but what can be done with great colour, layout, typography, and clever CSS. [more inside]

I've been charged with redoing our Label Website pretty much from scratch, both back-end and front-end (yes, its a self-link but its relevant). Because this site is about classical music, there is a HUGE amount of metadata that will need to be collected, parsed and displayed (think 3700 titles * 10 tracks * performer, composer, title, length, etc for each track).
Has anyone done or know of anyone who's done work on this scale on either the back-end side or the design side before that they might recommend? I have an RFP pretty much already mocked-up. I would've liked to have used someone like 37signals but it seems like they don't do work for others anymore.
