How-to's on current (design) trends in Web Design?

My web design skills have gotten a bit rusty over the past few years (too much coding, not enough Photoshopping!) and I'm in a hurry to get back up to speed for a huge job I'm starting on next week. Normally I would figure this all out on my own but there's no enough time for that so... I need recommendations for good resources (blogs, books, magazines) on current trends in web design and on how to implement/execute elements of these trends in software like Photoshop. This article on the Smashing Magazine site is a good example of the sort of thing I'm looking for, except it doesn't include any how-to's. Pointers to useful templates / frameworks / web design kits are most welcome as well.

Showcase site for beautiful AND functional webdesign?

I am looking for websites showcasing beautiful webdesign that is not too 'out there'. If I Google for 'great / beautiful webdesign' I mostly get examples of sites that are indeed very beautiful to look at but would never be accepted by the sort of clients I work for (mostly small business owners that need their website to communicate the info on their products very clearly - i.e. they are not artists or brands that are just out to project a cool image). So I guess I am looking for examples of excellent webdesign for relatively boring sites.

Easiest CMS/blog to get into design-wise?

I'm an experienced webdesigner looking for a CMS/blog whose themes are easy to change or build from scratch (preferably just through CSS).
