Is it even legal to commission a redraw of an exsisting illustration?

I need to replicate this picture. I can't use that picture due to copyright issues. But my client is insistent on using the idea. What are my options? It seems to be I have three options, so probably three questions.

A) Find the original illustrator and attempt to gain copyright to use the image. Have NO idea where to start because my client doesn't remember where the image came from and my google skills fail me. I also need a much higher quality of that image.

B) Commission someone to redraw it. Where do I find a person like this? Would Etsy be a place to try? How much should I expect to pay? I'm concerned about this option, because this job does not pay much.

C) Find replacement pictures. Which I have tried to do. (flour, eggs, bowl for picture 1, cakemix for picture 2, store bought cake for picture 3, party at chuck e cheeses for picture 4). I wasn't fond of my results because these need to go into a flash animation. I couldn't shrink the pictures down far enough to keep their quality/clarity and still fit them within the required dimensions. (which is 700 pixels wide by 290 high)

D) Any other idea you might have?

Thanks!

Who's doing neat stuff with the web and comics?

Most comics on the web seem to be just scanned in print comics or the equivalent of same. Can you point me to any web comics that are making use of web/internet technology to make the comics reading experience different from print comics?

No need to mention Scott McCloud. For instance, all the web comics I've seen are essentially just one gif or jpeg per page. Are there any web comics that are putting each panel of a page in a div and layering them via css for dramatic effect? Are any using selectable web text in their word balloons instead of hand or computer done lettering that is just part of the art? Stuff like this, which incorporate aspects of the web to make comics, is what I'm looking for.

adsdaq doesn't like webcomics

Why is Adsdaq dropping webcomics? Across the board, webcomics are being dropped by the ad service Adsdaq. I understand that certain webcomics don't meet a professional standard, but that goes for any website, not just webcomics. Some webcomics, like Pvp , The Abominable Charles Christopher and Sheldon, are quite popular and professional, and I'm sure bring in good advertising numbers for them. So why cut them off wholesale?

Looking for new comics to read

I need some recommendations for daily comic strips to read I've checked the old threads and found one thread that led me to some good stuff.

But, alas, that thread seemed to be filled with comics that were not to my taste. Plus, the thread is over 3 years old. Surely new stuff has come out since then.

My favorite comic strips in the past and present are as follows:
Calvin and Hobbes
Bloom County
Doonesbury (especially the Uncle Duke character)
Sinfest
My Filing Technique is Unstoppable (except for the excessive cursing)
Dilbert (Dogbert's my fav)

I'm looking for comics with a quirky point of view and an edgy sense of humor. I'm not big into sci-fi, gaming, or fantasy, so a lot of those might be out. I'm not closing myself off to such comics, but they would have to be really outstanding for me to get into them.

Also, I don't want to limit myself to webcomics. If there are nationally syndicated or paper-only strips out there that you think I might like, please recommend them too.

Thanks!

Cartoon Upload System needed

I draw a daily webcomic, but the script I use to upload the comic sucks and I want to replace it. Does anyone know of a free user-friendly upload script? There are a few features I'd like: I want to be able to upload multiple cartoons at once and then tell it how long each cartoon is supposed to be on the main page so that it automatically executes each cartoon in turn; if there's no new cartoon to replace the one on the main page, I want it to leave that cartoon up; it needs to have a functional tag system for my archives; and I'm in the process of learning how to use flash, so if it could upload flash movies as well as jpegs, that would be great.

Online webcomics - graphic novel or manga style

Can webcomics fans point me to some good online manga or graphic novel type comics? Bonus points if the story is complete and I don't have to wait for an update every week (side question - why is it so hard to find webcomics that are completed?). Sex, violence, serious, silly, whatever, as long as the story is engaging and the artwork is well done. Some I have found so far that I like (although all are unfinished): Last Blood, No Rest for the Wicked, Rice Boy, Flipside.

Science web comics? (wishing for, not a discussion of) Does anyone know of any web comics that have a scientific bent? Not "technology" as in computers or gadgets, but biology or physics or anything else you can think of.

Jokes like this and this or this are exactly what I'm looking for, but I want more!

Tools/Resources for creating webcomics

Webcomics: If just about anybody can make one, what tools/resources would I need? I have a good mental picture of character design, but my hand drawing is hardly worth scanning, so I might as well do it all on my compy (Yes, XQ, you can try to talk me out of it). At least at first, it'll mostly be standing-around-swapping-punchlines, so nothing too complicated. So what's out there to make me a webtoonist?
