I'm recording a webcam stream, and intend to do this 24/7 for a year. How can I make week/month/year-long timelapses out of it? [more inside]
I've had loose change move or disappear in the last few weeks, and some of the items on my desk have seemed to have been moved or shuffled through. I'm seeking recommendations for smaller webcams that I could use to monitor my personal space. [more inside]
I'm interested in setting up a webcam to livestream the green roof of my workplace. Any suggestions? [more inside]
I'm wondering if there's a service that provides an easy way to collect video messages. I'd imagine it working like this: I send some people a link to www.vidmsg.com/messagesforme and then they click "record" to record from their webcams. Then I can log in and play all the videos. Does something like that exist?
We're having a litter of puppies soon and need a good camera to let interested people look at them playing, eating, sleeping, etc. in their corral. A good camera that is NOT a Dropcam. [more inside]
I have a couple of Hikvision network camera's (DS-2CD2032) and I would like to make one them visible on my website without having to enter username and password or giving access to the control pannel. [more inside]
Piip Show was a live stream of a bird feeder that looked like a coffee shop, and it was pretty much my favourite thing on the internet in 2014. But it doesn't seem to be back for 2015. Is there anything out there that will fill the Piip Show-sized hole in my heart? [more inside]
What kind of ambient live streams keeps you connected to the world? What kind of webcams keeps you company at night? Help me find audio (and video) streams that make me feel connected when I'm alone, working at my computer. [more inside]
Are there cam sites out there that are set up similarly to sex cam sites like Jasmin, Chaturbate, etc., but without the, uh, sex? Like where people can host "rooms" and broadcast and chat and such, maybe even receive tips, but where nudity and sexual content are prohibited? My google-fu has absolutely failed me here. Thanks for any suggestions!
I need an external mic or webcam that will work with my aging MacBook Pro in order to tutor via Skype and to create recordings of my screen for video tutorials. I can't use the built-in mic because I want to do all of this with the laptop shut and hooked up to a Cinema Display. [more inside]
I'd like to include some audio in a web cam broadcast, but right now all I can do is play the audio out of my speakers to the web cam mic, which of course sounds terrible. Is there a way I can stream the audio directly into the broadcast from, say, iTunes or some other application?
Is there a cheaper and easier set-up for spying on my cats than setting up something like Simplicam or Dropcam? [more inside]
For a science demonstration at my son's school, I have modified a webcam so it can detect infrared light. I would like to be able to heat up an object (I don't mind what) so that it can be seen on the infrared camera. So far, I have found that I can see a match (even after it has gone out), an IR remote control, and a gas flame. But these are all a bit tricky in the school environment. Ideally, I would have a battery powered device that would heat up a piece of metal enough that it will glow (in the IR) without anyone being able to burn themselves or set light to anything. I don't mind making the device, modifying something, or just buying something.
What's the easiest way to record a video on a Mac that can easily allow switching -- or even a split screen -- between a webcam and an application (say, Word)? The idea is to be able to record video of the speaker, type or draw notes that can be on the video, and be able to switch focus from the face to the notes or have both on screen at once, like a teacher with a software whiteboard. Most screencasting software only seems to focus on the screen and doesn't allow easy switching back and forth from the webcam.
Seriously if I knew this was the story - wouldn't have gotten a brand new webcam today. But so here it is - Livecam VX800 - uninstalled, reinstalled - and as a plug and play install for *New Hardware* (XP) is not recognizing it as a webcam - but as *USB Audio Device* Then when I check it in Device Manager under Imaging Devices, it's a *USB video device*. In light of revelations that some folks can look at me over the internet through my webcam without me knowing, I would like to have a solution to this problem. I was thinking that taping over the webcam would work well, but it might also look tacky, and might also add a residue to my computer that I would not like. Is there a kind of tape that would look good on a unibody macbook pro? How would I make that tape look good? What sort of tape would be suggested for its no residue, opaque characteristics? Is there a better solution than tape, like a well-thought out kickstarter project or something of that nature? Please help me with my paranoid bougie computer problem.
I need to set up a basic webcam stream for a gallery exhibition. I'm looking to have a live-ish still image of the gallery space (ideally just a JPG that refreshes every 30 seconds or so—no video, no audio, like this) that can be viewed via a web browser at a second, off-site location. I think I have any hardware I would need — is there a piece of (Mac) software or some other option that can handle the capture and upload/broadcast with minimal headache? [more inside]
I would like to put a streaming webcam on the front of a large piece of machinery as it goes about its daily business. The problem is that this piece of machinery will most likely be outside of WiFi range for the majority of its day. However, it will be within good cellphone/4G range. Are there webcams built to handle this kind of use? Any recommendations if so? (Or, potentially, could I just use a smartphone or something similar?)
I've been job searching for the past couple of months. Some online listings compel you to apply for them through a recruiter site. I try to avoid doing this, because I've been spammed as a result by sites like Careerbuilder.com who apparently don't vet their partners very well. [more inside]
I'm looking for the most bare-bones video cameras that money can buy. I've been searching among security cameras, but what are some other possible searches? Imagine a security camera without the LED lights. As in, I would prefer an analog as opposed to USB output, but cost is more important than anything. The current cheapest security cameras I can find are $28 or so. Do any exist that are perhaps less than $20? [more inside]
I'm building an interactive art piece that processes video from a webcam using Processing. The piece would look much more fluid if I could get 60fps at a minimum resolution of 1024x768 from the webcam. I'd love to spend $100±.
We have a foscam webcam with night vision and the works. We can access it via wifi on our phones and computers, but want a dedicated screen to use as a baby monitor. Portable and/or plug-in... what are our options? Thanks!

A number of us want to collaborate on a web video. Basically, we'd love to find a site where each of us could record a short clip via web cam and someone could edit them all together. Nothing fancy, just a video like those super cuts of a character doing a signature phrase over and over again. Are there any sites that make this easy?
A few minutes ago, my macbook pro (OSX 10.6.8) played what I think was the Skype incoming call chime. I didn't think Skype was running, and as I was Cmd-Tabbing through applications to see if I'd accidentally left Skype turned on, the webcam light briefly flashed. Skype wasn't running, but I double-checked by starting Activity Monitor, and didn't see any processes with Skype in the name. I'm not totally sure it was the skype chime, because I don't use skype often. I do have google chat running in gmail with video chat enabled, but there were no visible notifications in the gmail window. I suppose it could've been a deceptive flash ad in a browser tab, but it's the webcam light that creeps me out. Any ideas what might have happened? Should I find a malware scanner? Is that even a thing? The last ask.metafilter match for "osx malware" is almost 2 years old.

I'm interested in checking out the Pitch Drop Experiment. I've tried on a couple of computers and browsers and I can't see the web cam - which is supposed to be viewable on this page. Is it just me or my computer or is it disabled? Hurry, it could happen any moment now! [more inside]

I'm looking for a Windows app for viewing multiple remote webcams on a single screen -- something like Live Cams Pro on iOS. Ideally it would be able to categorize cameras by topic or location, support live feeds as well as static ones, and maybe be able to store timed snapshots from the cams over time (like Camembert could do back in the day). I'm not as concerned about receiving audio or controlling the cameras. [more inside]

(Asking for a friend.) I need to find some sort of software that lets you both record yourself through a webcam (showing the image live in a window on the screen) and (not simultaneously) play a pre-recorded video in the same screen. Ideally it would have very minimalist buttons, or configurable buttons/toolbar. [more inside]

I'm looking for a USB webcam with really good low light performance and full manual controls (exposure, focus, etc). A digital camera or camcorder that can emulate a webcam would work too. Bonus if it's known to work well with software like Processing, OpenFrameworks, and/or Jitter.

Will anyone be able to trace it back to this macbook? [more inside]

Recommend me a video camera to use capturing sports action. I'm looking for a USB camera for use outside that can send live capture to a Win7 machine. It should have a wide auto-focus, software to instantly review the feed. I've reviewed previous Mefi posts, and can't decide whether a web cam, stand-alone Hd camcorder, or something like a Flip or helmet cam would be suitable. Right now the Contour or GoPro are considerations, but I'm unsure of the software side. Price is not really important, but I dont' want to spend $500.
