Dear Metafilter, I need to automate some tasks at work, and I'd like to make it happen quickly. [more inside]
I have a number of projects in mind that boil down to: make a database, then overlay an interface so that users can do some simple queries from a webpage or (ideally) a webapp on mobile. What programs should I be looking at to make this happen? [more inside]
I'm a web developer looking to build a 'micropreneur'-style side project but am short on tangible ideas -- everyone around me works in software, and we either roll-our-own or have hundreds of web apps already targeting us. Do you know of tasks in an industry that could be automated with software but aren't? [more inside]

I have a good idea for a web application, but I'm worried it might incur the wrath of a few specific larger companies. Would it be a good idea to create a business entity to protect myself from any personal liability I might be exposed to? [more inside]
I've been tasked with creating (well, refactoring and redesigning) a web app for managing a security company. It includes call logs, encounter reports, regions, locations, duties (patrols), various kinds of bulletins, and other things. If I were to search for existing software that covers the same purpose, what would I search for? What is this kind of thing called? [more inside]

I'm the director of a local road race that raises funds for our public school, and I'm looking for a reasonable online app that lets us solicit credit card donations via individual participant pages which would associate given donations with the participants who solicited them. [more inside]
Sometimes, I am a front-end web developer. Frequently, I meet new people at work who want to turn really complicated Excel documents into dazzlingly interactive web applications. Besides Excel's "Save to Web App" or "Save to SharePoint" features, such people ask if I can tap into an industry to support this -- perhaps scads of agencies and web-based or downloadable tools that make "websites" or at least customizable, interactive reports from Excel spreadsheets, data, and calculations. I'm yet to find this an abundance of examples of this. Are there? If so, what do you call them? [more inside]

I have a really interesting idea for a web app that I've been kicking around for a while. Good idea? [more inside]

Looking for a social media tool that allows visitors to our website to sign & send a pre-written email (and to possibly add their own comments or edits as well, but that's not 100% necessary) to a group of local politicians. I've seen things like this many many times on social and political campaign websites, but have no idea if there's an out-of-the-box solution or if we need to hire someone to write it. [more inside]

What was that music webapp I had on my iPod? Help me remember the site I had saved to my homescreen a while ago. I'm fairly sure it was a webapp and not a proper app. I seem to remember the name for the icon was shortened to a two-letter acronym; I thought it was DI for digitalinspiration.com but googling that shows I was wrong. I'll try to describe it anyway: the app had a series of square, colourful icons down the left-hand side, not unlike the style to the iTunes gift card drawings. Each icon represented a category; I definately remember 'lounge', and the others were mostly dance/electronic music related genres like house, groove etc. probably hip-hop stuff too. Definately a cool and groovy site.

My employer is looking for a more accurate way to calculate downtime in web applications. Right now, we calculate in minutes of overall downtime, but I feel it would be more accurate to count "user minutes" that are lost - 20 mins of downtime when there were 10 users on the system is far less important than 20 mins of downtime with 500 users online. Is there a standard out there for doing this? [more inside]

I have declared the manifest file in the index.html, but I don't think the mime-type is recognized. Yahoo doesn't allow ht access files to be uploaded either. (I am trying to write my first web-app for the iPhone) Thanks for any guidance!
