I’m currently working on an international project and need to format documents written in German, Polish and Croatian for use on the web. What is the quickest way to convert all the non-ASCII characters into the relevant character entity? Some sort of web form would be my ideal solution, but I’d settle for a freeware program.
When I was in college, and first learning to build websites, I began by using Microsoft FrontPage. It definately had it's shortcomings and I'm glad it has been retired. I've long since moved on to better tools and methods myself, but there's one feature I did enjoy called "Navigation View". This was a way to view your site as a tree-map, but it was also a way to build out a large and somewhat complex web of pages. I found it to be a useful outlining tool, for later building complex sites. Is there anything like that now? For those of you who might not be familiar with the feature, try a google image search for frontpage navigation view I tried looking on another forum for an answer, but the conversation there was not helpful to me at all.
Let's say you have a global disaster where the traditional web is no longer available (all ISPs are down, or a virus/cyber-attack incapacitates the web for entire regions of the world). What are the data communication alternatives in this sort of context? Is anyone still running a BBS? Does anyone even have a dialup modem anymore? Is there something better than this? [more inside]

Posting for my wife, a graphic designer who is tasked with doing a website layout job for a client. Here's the rub: The company has an existing logo that's red and blue, but she doesn't necessarily want to use red and blue as the dominant colors in this particular layout, but someone from the company is convinced that they MUST use red and blue as the primary colors throughout the site. I've had no luck coming up with any kind of evidence to support my wife's point, and so now I'm here to query the hive. Do any of you design-minded folks know of any articles or collections of layouts that might help my wife make her case? Sorry if the question is very vague.
a few months ago someone I follow tweeted a link to a website that curates and displays only the latest news headlines and top stories. I found this thread (http://ask.metafilter.com/192456/A-better-newspaper) on MF but the site is not listed there. This is a fairly new and probably still obscure site, but I loved the look of it and would like to find it again and seemed to have lost the bookmark. I cannot find it on google because the search terms are so generic. This was an extremely CLEAN site, black on white (i believe) with attractive type, no (or very few/discreet) ads, and nothing fancy going on in terms of media or anything like that. Similar to "theweek.com" in terms of content but nowhere near as busy visually. any help would be appreciated.
I'm a web developer who is very capable with HTML and CSS, but that's about it. I am fairly comfortable with SQL, but now I need to learn to develop an API. I'd like to read a good book on the subject. Is there such a book? All I can find are things that explain why an API is useful, or things that assume you already know what you're doing in order to build/use an API.
When buying a web domain, one is given the option(for an additional fee), to make the domain "private" where the owner of the domain is hidden from public view. Then the question is, how private is a private domain? Can a web smart person or internet ninja find out the information? The desire is to hide the domain and completely non-work related blog from my employer.

Our dear friends' 6 year old daughter was murdered on Dec. 14th at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The father is testifying at a public hearing in Connecticut this afternoon. This is the website from which it will be broadcast.; the event is titled "BI PARTISAN GUN VIOLENCE MENTAL HEALTH WORKING GROUP". I have been asked to make a recording of this event. I live in Massachusetts and cannot view the event in person nor do I receive this channel on television, so recording it as it streams online is the only route open to me. I have experimented with recording the stream using VLC and SDP with no success thus far. Your help would be greatly appreciated by me and the parents.
I'm learning a language (Hungarian) and I look up new words in a bunch of websites (2 dictionaries, Google images inside of Google Translate, Forvo.com). Is there any way to make a web browser use two windows to show the first and second window-fulls of a single web page? This would be the equivalent of the "two up" view found in some PDF viewers. On the left, your normal view of a web page. On the right, the next part of that same page -- the thing you would see if you hit "page down" in the first window. [more inside]
