I've been doing frontend web development for around 15 years and want to find a new position at the lead/architect level. I know a few sites to look at, and plenty of recruiters contact me, but what else can I do? [more inside]

Has anyone completed a master degree in multimedia? This would be a production degree, not research or theoretical. I work instructional design and support in a elearning group through a major university and have a chance to get tuition at very low cost. I am just not sure if gong through the program will make a difference in obtaining better positions later. I am in my early 40's and transferred to this position/industry after moving around in IT for about 10 years. [more inside]

I am a midwifery student in the US. I found a website of a man who claims to be a midwife. This man has a very disturbing website with very graphic, I would say pornographic, photos of women whose births he has attended. These are poor women of color from another country. Going by the demographics, it is likely that many of these women come from conservative catholic background and would be horrified by nude photos of themselves plastered all over the internet. There is little chance that most of these women have internet access and ZERO Chance that all of these women have consented to these photos being placed on the world wide web. I am very angry that these women have had such graphic photos placed of them on the web without their consent. What steps should I take to have these photos taken down, if that is possible? I have done a whois search and gotten that info. What is my best possible course of action to have the maximum chance of having these women's photos removed and/or the site shut down?
The notes (aka comments) on medium.com don't appear to load on firefox, but load correctly in chrome and mobile safari. See these screenshots. Everything else appears to be loading correctly except the 'read next' button in the lower left of the page and the menu button in the top left. [more inside]
ISP: Web Hosting Control Panel, cPanel, Plesk and OSS solutions. Are they generally complete systems, front-end AND back-end? How are they designed technically, and is it worth using as an ISP. More inside! [more inside]
Everyone remembers Broderbund Software's The Print Shop from the 80s. I am looking for a similar desktop publishing experience today. Pixelated fonts, limited clip art, and quarter page greeting cards. Is there a webapp out there that will let me do this sort of thing? Again, I'm looking for super basic functionality.
I desperately need to pull together a web front-end for my MySQL database on Mac OSX 10.9.1. I have two days to do this, and have spent most of the day down a Python rabbit hole. [more inside]
I'm looking for a cloud-based database solution with a web front end. The idea is that you could upload an Excel spreadsheet or CSV file (or Access export), and then customize a front end query that will bring back results. [more inside]

I want to start a service that will put real letters into the mail via a website. I kind of prefer a meaningless name that is simple, unambiguous to spell, and memorable that would grow with the site, if it began to branch out into different areas. And of course, the domain should be open. Any ideas? [more inside]
I was thinking back to high school, when I spent hours browsing archives such as the Jargon File, the d20 SRD, and bash.org. Of course, these are just scratching the surface - I read pages and pages of D+D files, funny anecdotes, and interesting stories on personal sites. I miss the magic of diving into a site like that - any recommendations?
Chrome Browser: When I'm in dev mode and have overrides enabled (for example: "iPhone - iOS 6 / 640x980 / Emulate touch events / CSS media: screen"), Chrome throws a black box over the upper left corner of the web page with status in red text (for example: "Overrides: User-Agent / Device Metrics / Touch / Media") It is omnipresent and unnecessary. How do I turn that black box off? [more inside]
I'm looking for a tool that will let me have a map interface open (Google Maps, OSM, Bing, I don't mind), click on a location, enter a brief comment, then have that data (lat/long, comment, timestamp) stored for later retrieval - something like a Google Docs spreadsheet would be ideal. I need a pure CSS navigation menu solution for a static, one page application, the simpler the better. [more inside]
Hi everyone, I will soon be working on a project that involves the development of a web platform and will be hiring part-time engineers. I would like to know enough about programming and web development to be able to collaborate with them and understand the language, and have realistic expectations of when things get built. So I am not looking to learn how to program (I wish I had time for that), but rather have a basic understanding of how the system works and fits together (front-end, back-end, etc.) Anyone know of any good online resources- online courses, websites, etc. for this type of knowledge? I've checked out Code Academy and Khan Academy, but both seem heavily focused on helping you learn how to write code vs. understanding the system abstractly and holistically. But I may have missed something. Thanks in advance for your help!
I'm in the earliest possible stages of building a web interface that will make it easy to display, graph, download, summarize, and interact with a wide variety of data. If you use scientific data from the internet, what are some of the websites you've encountered that make using data the easiest, most intuitive, and give you the best control? Also, what are some must-have features for you, and some of the best and worst design decisions the site builders have made? [more inside]
As a long time Linux Engineer I enjoy reading about the technologies used by sites like Twitter, Facebook, Etsy, Yahoo (for things like Flickr) and other large sites to build things out to scale. I often lend a hand with Windows customers at work and it recently occurred to me that I've never seen a website or blog posts that relate to scaling on Windows. [more inside]
Evernote's web-clipper is super convenient, but creates clippings in a non-standard format making them tickly to edit and often unreadable when exported into HTML (e.g. for sharing). Any tips for quickly/efficiently stripping off some of the style/formatting kludge? [more inside]
I recently replaced a couple of old LinkSys WRT54G routers running DD-WRT in my home with a couple of couple of D-Link DIR-615 routers that I got as refurbs from woot.com. I bought these because the old machines only did 802.11 B/G whereas nearly everyone in the house now has a device that has 802.11 N capability. All seems well to me, but my wife and younger daughter consistently complain that they now frequently are unable to display some images from Facebook, and that this began to occur precisely at the time that I put these new routers in. A year and three months ago I registered on extabit.com. And I got a month service and I paid for it. I just realized they have been charging me on my paypal account monthly since then. But autopayment did not go through. So I owe them about 200 dollars now. I have never used the account after the first month. Do I have to pay for it? I want to complaint but I don't know how to reach to them either. Thank you guys so much!
I use Google Scholar to look for court cases. For some reason, for the last few months the options at the bottom of the search box have been as shown in the extended area. It used to be that the last entry would be "Michigan courts," as that is where I live. But the choice now is always "California courts." Even if I take the several (annoying) steps needed to select Michigan courts, it defaults back to California courts the next time. Does anyone know how this behavior can be changed? [more inside]

I'm a frontend web developer with quite a long resume. I work full-time but I'd like to pick up some freelance, remote work in my spare time. I'm wondering if there are any places to look besides my personal network, Craigslist, and those awful "Rent-a-coder" sites where you get underbid by overseas folks who'll do it for $9/hr. I've replaced Gmail with Fastmail, thanks to AskMe. Now, do you have a calendar suggestion? Preferably something with an Android app, that I can import events from my Google calendar, and with similar ease-of-use. thanks!
I am reminded of Google retiring GReader... the way that it changed my online life and the uproar that came along with it. Except this time there is no uproar or teams of companies try to market their competitive offerings to me. Where do I go now? [more inside]

I'm a front-end web developer (HTML, CSS, jQuery) just starting out. I have a good portfolio from doing work for friends and a few businesses. I'm self-taught and therefore lacking some of the confidence that comes with the feedback you get in a structured learning environment or working tightly with other developers. I want to get in with a web development company/agency that has a great work environment. What would you say are the best web dev companies in Toronto in terms of great work/life balance, great (bright, comfortable) office space, and mentorship/on-going learning opportunities? (Opportunities to work abroad with the company would also be welcome!). Thanks for the info!
I've got limited HTML and CSS skills, and I'd like to make a Web site that's basically one really, really, really gigantic picture and uses jQuery to jump around from point to point inside it. What's the easiest way to do that? [more inside]
I apparently have bad or damaged Google Web Fonts installed on a Windows 7 machine. Fun fact, they are not in the Windows Fonts directory. Text is coming up gnarly, super aliased, big and chunky in both FireFox and Chrome as they appear to be loading a local cache of the font(s) as opposed to hitting Google for them. Where are they? How can I fix this? [more inside]

I am designing a website for a set of museum exhibits. The curator designed the museum panels so two items are displayed on each panel and the viewer experiences them in each other's context. If we were making a book instead of a website, we would place these items on facing pages. What is the equivalent of facing pages in web layout? Can you think of websites that pair items so they are experienced together (i.e. without scrolling down)? [more inside]
